Dustin Johnson Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are both no longer in the field

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar headline what has already been a busy list of names deciding to take a pass on this week's AT&T Pro-Am. Jonathan Byrd and Rickie Barnes have gained entry into the field and should be added to pricing pools on Tuesday. At this time there is no injury news associated with either Kuchar or Johnson's choice to not play this week. Johnson is coming off a big win last week and could have opted out after a long travel plan back to the states.

Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are both out this week

News broke this afternoon that both Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are out of this week's CJ Cup due to COVID-19. Finau tested positive last week but has not yet cleared the testing protocol in order to return. DJ tested positive today and will miss this week. Robby Shelton and J.T. Poston are now both into this week's field.

Ten Minutes to roster lock at The BMW Championship, no major news to report

With just a little over ten minutes to roster lock, there is no major news to report of the first round of The BMW Championship. Despite other sports and athletes protesting and boycotting games, the tour is ready to go as scheduled. Dustin Johnson will enter the week as the odd's on favorite to win. With a score of 30 under at last week's Northern Trust Johnson won the first leg of the playoffs by an impressive 11 shots. ResultsDB will be up and running shortly after lock. Good luck this week Grinders!!!

Elite Golfer Priced at a Discount that's Loves Pete Dye Tracks

The pricing came out and the DFS Twitter bubble went crazy at DJ being $8,500. I originally expected him to be extreme chalk, but some of that buzz is wearing off as we get closer to Thursday. We currently have his projected ownership at 15%, which is a green light in my eyes. He wasn't in great form before the break and he missed the cut at Colonial last week, but I'm not overly concerned. He's one of the few bombers that has consistently played well on Pete Dye courses. Over the last 50 rounds on Dye courses, he has gained the third most strokes in this field. He's played here each of the last two years, posting finishes of T28 and T16. At the end of the day, I'm betting on talent over form when it comes to DJ this week.

Dustin Johnson in search of his 7th WGC title

With his current count of six WGC wins, Dustin Johnson is only an unthinkable thirteen wins away from passing Tiger Woods for the overall lead career WGC wins. To have six PGA tour wins alone is an impressive task, so Johnson's six wins in WGC events only points to how dominant of a player he can be on one of golf's biggest stages. With three of those wins coming at this event, two at this course, Johnson has a proven track record of high performance at this event. Johnson is 12 for 12 in rounds under par at Club de Golf Chapultepec with 7 of those rounds at an impressive 66 or better. Johnson was close to winning last week at Rivera ( another course he plays well) and should have plenty of momentum to build on as he prepares to defend his win from last year.

Dustin Johnson is flying under the radar this week

Starting the week seven shots behind the lead, Dustin Johnson has almost become the forgotten golfer this week. With his projected ownership numbers dropping almost 20% since the start of the week, it appears most in the community are ready to give up on Johnson. WIth spotty form over his last few starts, it's easy to make a case for marking this former number one golfer in the world off your list. The decrease in price combined with the drop in projected ownership makes this a great spot to buy low on a golfer that can makeup strokes in a hurry. Even without a win, Johnson could easily play well enough to get into the top 3, which would make him a top play at his price for the week. Back with his old swing coach and motivated to finish the season strong, Johnson seems like the perfect golfer you want in terms of chasing the lead.

Top End Golfer With Winning Potential

This is a really interesting spot. On one hand, Dustin Johnson has been in fairly poor form (by his standards) so far this summer. On the other hand, this is a world class golfer who has top 25 finishes in his last four trips to TPC Southwind, outside of one year in which he withdrew early in the tournament. Obviously, that includes his victory a year ago. He has more course history at the venue than almost all of the other high-priced golfers in the field, and that does have some value. Most people consider DJ a pure bomber that profiles well on courses with extra par fives, but he actually ranks 13th on Tour in par four scoring this year. I’ll be overweight on the field with my GPP exposure, for sure.

Dustin Johnson is back with his old swing coach ahead of The Open Championship

PGA Tour players make swing coach changes often throughout a typical year without much fanfare from the media. Being on the worlds best golfers Dustin Johnson is not your normal tour player, so when he makes a swing coach change the media pays attention. Johnson had a very public split from swing coach Claude Harmon III earlier this season. The split between Harmon and Johnson did not last long as the two were seen working together ahead of this week's major. From a DFS standpoint, this should not move the needle much, but it's still worth keeping an eye on as the week unfolds. For all, we know the two could have reunited earlier but this is the first time they have worked together in a public setting.

You Have to Pay a Premium for Everyone in the Field Except DJ

DJ is far and away my favorite play of the week. He ranks first in this field in the five key statistics that are listed above — strokes gained total, off the tee, approach, birdie or better percentage, and bogey avoidance. He also rates out number one in the hard yardage breakdown and he’s one of the best putters in the field on poa annua greens. This is golf and anything can happen, but he’s head and shoulders above everyone else from a projection standpoint. He’s typically in this same price range for the majors, so we should have a ton of interest in this weak field. I rarely hit the lock button on a golfer, but am considering it with DJ this week.

Top Play of the Week on Paper

It’s hard to argue against DJ as the top play of the week. Yes, Brooks Koepka has won two straight U.S. Opens and is a big game hunter, but I’m not sure this course suits his game as well as the others have. Rory McIlroy is coming off of a win at the RBC Canadian Open, but every single one of his wins have come when he’s shot 12-under or lower. Basically, it’s hard to see him winning if this course plays difficult. DJ has amazing course history at Pebble Beach (including two wins), he has an amazing track record in U.S. Opens, and of the elites he has by far the best putting splits on poa. His ball striking continues to impress week in and week out and eventually, he is going to pick up his second major. He’s first in this field in bogey avoidance and he’s as good as anyone with his wedges. If paying all the way up, DJ is my guy this week.
