Fernando Tatis Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Top Power Park Could Offer Some of the Top Bats on the Board

Coors may be wasted on the Pirates tonight, but a warm day in Cincinnati could come very close to a similar environment. In fact, Statcast park factors give RHBs the highest home run factor and LHBs the second highest home run factor in baseball over a three year span. Considering that RHBs have a .398 wOBA and .422 xwOBA against Tony Santillan through three starts, RH Padres may be some of the top bats on the board. Santillan struck out 34.4% in 32.1 AAA innings and now 16 of 64 through three major league starts, but with just a 10.6 SwStr%, 12.5 BB%, 28.6 GB%, 92.5 mph EV and 13.5% Barrels/BBE. You can see how that can get ugly quickly in Cincinnati, especially against the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr. (182 wRC+, .372 ISO vs RHP since 2020), Manny Machado (131 wRC+, .232 ISO) and Tommy Pham (170 wRC+ last 30 days overall). Dropping a bit deeper in the lineup, you may have one of the top FanDuel values in Wil Myers (127 wRC+, .232 ISO) for just $2.5K. Looking at these numbers, you start to wonder if oddsmakers might actually be a bit light on the Padres at 5.46 implied runs, just the sixth highest total on the board.

These Are The Bullpens You Want to Attack on Friday

If you’re looking to attack the worst bullpen in the majors, that would be the Cincinnati Reds, who certainly didn’t acquit themselves very well behind Wade Miley in San Diego last night. Over the last 30 days, they have a major league worst 6.82 ERA and 5.10 FIP. They will be backing Tony Santillan, making his second major league start tonight. Though Santillan faced 25 batters and threw 97 pitches in his major league debut that didn’t even get him through five innings with four walks and five strikeouts against the Rockies. He isn’t an extremely well regarded prospect (40+ FV grade via Fangraphs), but popped up on radars striking out 34.4% in 32.1 AAA innings this year. He had just a 9.3 SwStr% and 48 F-Strike% in his debut. Fernando Tatis Jr. has a 174 wRC+ and .363 ISO vs RHP since 2020 and a 206 wRC+ over the last 30 days.

Another bullpen players may want to attack is in Baltimore, where the relief corps for the O’s have a 6.19 ERA and 4.36 FIP over the last month. Bruce Zimmermann hasn’t completed six innings since his second start of the season, but does have a respectable 4.25 ERA and 4.27 FIP over 29.2 innings since being recalled and that’s with a 16.7 K-BB%. However, he is left-handed and will be facing an almost entirely right-handed lineup with power. RHBs have a .353 wOBA and .388 xwOBA against Zimmermann. Randal Grichuk (150 wRC+, .272 ISO vs LHP since 2020) costs less than $4K on DraftKings. Both the Padres and Blue Jays exceed implied runs with Toronto owning the highest team total on the board outside Coors (5.61).

Great Potential For Elevated Hard Contact

The Padres have just the fourth highest implied run line on a 10 game slate, which barely keeps them on the top quarter of the board, but this looks like one of the top matchups of the day favoring offense. Each of the first six batters in the projected lineup exceed a 100 wRC+ and .180 ISO vs RHP since last season and among that group, Jake Cronenworth (135 wRC+, .213 ISO career vs RHP) has the lowest overall wRC+ this year (95). Taylor Widener is a low end prospect with back end of the rotation upside if things break right and that’s sort of how he’s performed through four starts (12.9 K-BB% with four of eight Barrels leaving the yard and just one-third of his contact on the ground). If we focus on that last part, along with some other Statcast numbers, that may be where the real value lies in the San Diego lineup tonight. While Widener appears to have a 70 point wOBA split since he was called up last year, by xwOBA, RHBs (.369) actually should have done more damage than LHBs (.354). This works fine for the Padres with Fernando Tatis (141 wRC+, .289 ISO vs RHP career), who is just heating up. The first four batters in the projected lineup for the Padres tonight (Tatis, Trent Grisham, Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer) all exceed a 97 mph EV on line drives and fly balls this year. If Widener is going to allow the Padres to elevate tonight, he may be in a lot of trouble.

Three HRs in 13 PAs Against Tonight's Pitcher

Whether he’s stealing signs, as the Dodgers accused him of, or not, Fernando Tatis Jr. is heating up with ALL the Home Runs in the weekend series at Los Angeles, most importantly proving his health. Merrill Kelly doesn’t seem like someone he has to steal signs against because he’s homered three times in 13 PAs against (97.8 mph EV). Only three other batters on the slate have even two HRs against the pitcher they are facing tonight (Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper, Scott Schebler). If you don’t trust BvP, there are plenty of other reasons to load up on San Diego bats too tonight. We can start with batters from either side of the plate being within four points of a .320 wOBA vs Kelly since 2019 and the fact that Statcast boost LHBs up to a .364 xwOBA (RHBs .329) based on the quality of their contact. Through four starts, he has struck out just 13 of 95 with an 8.6 SwStr%. Four of his eight Barrels (10.5%) have left the yard with his ground ball rate (38.7%) way down. Despite being projected to bat sixth, Jake Cronenworth (138 wRC+, .217 ISO vs RHP career) may be the best value in the lineup and a key piece in keeping stacks affordable. He costs $3.5K or less on either site. Luis Campusano is the only player projected who is below a .178 ISO vs RHP since 2019. The Padres are among three teams just under five implied runs tonight, below the Yankees and White Sox.

All of the Elements For An Abundance of Hard Contact

Another favorable forecast from Kevin: “Gametime temps close to 80 degrees and a daytime game removing any threat of the marine layer makes our west coast games more attractive than usual.” We saw this effect in the post-season last year when baseballs flew out of this park during day games in October. It may not be exactly the same with a slightly deadened ball, but that effect should be universal.

Next, let’s cover Madison Bumgarner, who allowed 13 HRs in just 41.2 innings last year amidst a three mph drop in velocity. Injuries were likely one cause and he’ll likely be better this year, but let’s also recognize that he allowed 50 Barrels in 2019 with a 3.90 ERA much lower than a 4.60 xERA, likely due to a favorable home park. RHBs have a .332 wOBA and .355 xwOBA against Bumgarner since 2019. The Arizona bullpen also projects in the bottom half of the league according to recent Fangraphs rankings.

Lastly, we confirm the destruction of the baseball by the San Diego Padres. Each of six RHBs in the projected lineup have at least a 118 wRC+ and .150 ISO vs LHP since 2019. Remove Jurickson Profar and the wRC+ jumps to 125. Manny Machado, Wil Myers and Fernando Tatis each exceed a 150 wRC+ and .250 ISO against southpaws since 2019. All three also exceeded a 90 mph EV overall last season. Myers costs just $2.9K on FanDuel, while Tommy Pham (92.8 mph EV in 2020) can help offset high stacking prices at just $3.1K on DraftKings.

Offense Is Coming Alive

The Cardinals had a foot and a half through the door to the NLDS last night, taking a 6-2 lead into the 6th inning, twelve outs away from putting Slam Diego on ice for 2020. They had largely held both Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado in check, at which time Mike Schildt made the bone-headed decision to bring in wild lefty Genesis Cabrera to face the bottom of the San Diego order. Cabrera has zero idea where the ball is going when he throws it. Well, he walked both the #8 and the #9 hitters, which put runners on base for the big boppers for the Padres. Back-to-back home runs from Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado followed, and Slam Diego came to life. The Padres have all the momentum right now. This game is clearly the spot to look for offense today, as Jack Flaherty hasn't been the same this year, making the Padres power hitters an upside stack in this spot.

Fernando Tatis has a career .300 ISO vs RHP

Trevor Cahill has struck out 20 of 72 batters faced this season, but with a just a 10.1 SwStr% and eight of those coming in a 20 batter span in one start. Three consecutive starts against the struggling Diamondbacks have resulted in 11.1 innings with four runs, but six walks. In fact, Cahill has a 15.3 BB% with a 2.65 ERA predicated on a .184 BABIP and 87.9 LOB%. A 3.28 xERA that takes into account an 87.1 mph EV is his only estimator below four. Since last season, batters from either side of the plate are above a .340 wOBA and .220 ISO against Cahill. Daily fantasy players should be loading up on hard hitting Padres again (23.5 HR/FB at home, 20.8 K% and 20.7 HR/FB vs RHP). Fernando Tatis (.399 wOBA, .300 ISO career vs RHP) could be the overall bat tonight. He has a 96.2 mph EV this year with 24% Barrels/BBE.

Fernando Tatis has a 96.4 mph EV this year

Antonio Senzatela has improved his results (3.33 ERA) by cutting down on his fastball usage. Unfortunately, he’s only struck out seven of his last 73 batters, which means the career best 12.1 K-BB% is being driven by a 3.5 BB% that’s less than half his career rate, while his 15.7 K% is now below his 16% career rate. His 50% ground ball rate is right on his career rate (50.5%) as well. All of his estimators are about a run above his ERA due to an 80.5 LOB%, but they’re still a small improvement on his career numbers. He’ll gain a significant park upgrade tonight, but will also be facing the hardest hitting offense in the league. The Padres have a 140 wRC+ and 24.2 HR/FB at home this year. They have a 126 wRC+, 21.1 K% and 21 HR/FB vs RHP this year. Considering that batters from either side of the plate are above a .340 wOBA against Senzatela since last season, Fernando Tatis (.400 wOBA, .302 ISO vs RHP career) may be your top overall bat again tonight. Tatis has a 180 wRC+ over the last 30 days and an even more impressive 96.4 mph EV this year. In most cases, he’s sending the ball back out harder than it’s coming in.

Fernando Tatis is barreling 20% of his contact this year

Kyle Freeland has pushed his ERA above four with eight runs over his last 6.1 innings. It’s still below all of his estimators, but now at least within half a run of all but his 5.49 DRA. The 55 GB% and 5.9 BB% with an 86.1 mph EV can only do so much to compensate for a 15.1 K%. He’s also facing an offense that has a 24.7 HR/FB at home and a 21.4 K% with an 18.6 HR/FB vs LHP. RHBs have a .374 wOBA and .245 ISO against Freeland since last season. They have a .335 wOBA against him this season. This isn’t Coors, but facing Fernando Tatis Jr. (.464 wOBA, .302 ISO vs LHP career) may make it feel like he’s pitching at home tonight. Tatis costs a hefty $4.6K on FanDuel, but is the bat players want to pay up for tonight. He has a 174 wRC+ over the last 30 days and 20% of his batted balls have been Barrels this year.

Leverage Stack

While Jordan Lyles has always struggled with control, he's been especially wild this season with a 16% walk rate. His lack of control in combination with a 44% hard hit rate and 5.8 SwStr% makes him one of the slate's premier pitchers to attack. Despite squaring off against one of the worst pitchers on the slate, I don't expect Padres hitters to soak up significant ownership which makes them an excellent stack to leverage the field with in large-field tournaments.
