Franchy Cordero Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Chad Kuhl has a .398 overall xwOBA this year and .382 wOBA against LHBs since last year

The Padres have a 26.9 K% against RHP that's the second worst split on the board, but the actual lineup tonight drops to 23.9% since the start of last season. Chad Kuhl has league average peripherals, but significant split issues and .398 xwOBA (89.6 mph aEV) that's second worst on the board, though he has been around a league average arm at home since last season (4.55 xFIP, .338 xwOBA). He can be rostered due to the caliber of the opposition, but he's not a pitcher players should feel confident in. In fact, his .382 wOBA (.368 xwOBA, 39.9 Hard%) against LHBs since last season suggests a few San Diego bats may be worth their price tags below $4K tonight. Eric Hosmer (157 wRC+, .215 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Travis Jankowski (150 wRC+, .133 ISO) in the leadoff spot, Franchy Cordero (118 wRC+, .212 ISO) and Raffy Lopez (135 wRC+, .288 ISO) are all candidates to do some damage at potentially low ownership rates.

A Top One-Off GPP Selection

I don't love a ton of team stacks tonight, so I will highlight an individual mid-range play that I do really like, and that's Franchy Cordero. He has flashed a ton of power potential so far this season, and he draws a favorable matchup against a pitcher with extreme splits in Chad Kuhl. The Pittsburgh starter has allowed a .377 wOBA and 39% hard contact rate to LHBs in his brief MLB career, while Cordero has posted a .382 wOBA against RHP this season. It's a great combination, and Cordero will fly under the radar tonight. Fire him up as a strong GPP one-off play.

Tyson Ross takes a trip to Coors five days after throwing 127 pitches

Tyson Ross threw 127 pitches five days ago in Arizona before his no-hit bid came to an end, the third straight start in which he's reached triple digits, which may have some additional unwanted effect here, as if Coors wasn't enough against an offense with the top implied run line on the slate (5.61). The slider, which he's thrown over 40% of the time to batters from either side of the plate this year, seems to be working again (23.5 K%, 9.9 SwStr%, 2.81 ERA, 3.50 SIERA, 24.4 Z-O-Swing% - 2nd best among all of Wednesday's pitchers - .277 xwOBA, 2.9% Barrels/BBE). All of that would be nice if Ross hadn't throw so many pitches recently and were pitching at home. He's not, so the best approach might be to find who in the Colorado lineup has success against sliders using PlateIQ. That would be DJ LeMahieu (.336 wOBA, .393 CxwOBA, 80.44 Contact%), Charlie Blackmon (.346 wOBA, .411 CxwOBA, .271 ISO), Nolan Arenado (.326 wOBA, .377 CxwOBA, .242 ISO) and Trevor Story (.329 wOBA, .408 CxwOBA, .297 ISO) surprisingly. None of the other four batters in the lineup exceed a .212 wOBA or .310 Contact xwOBA against the pitch since 2016, though David Dahl surely needs to be considered in the cleanup spot here for $3.5K on DraftKings. The bottom three not only fare poorly against sliders, but none even exceed a 55 wRC+ or .100 ISO against RHP since last season. On the other end, the Padres are in the middle of an eight team board (4.38 implied runs) against Jon Gray, who makes a substantial effort to increase his ground ball rate at home (50.1% vs 40.1% on the road career) at the cost of strikeouts (22.8% vs 25.8% on the road career). That may still be enough for consideration against an offense with a 27.4 K% and 88 wRC+ vs RHP this year, in addition to missing some middle of the order bats this afternoon. Offensively, Statcast favorite Franchy Cordero (101 wRC+, .243 ISO, 45 Hard% vs RHP career) is your man for $4K or less on either site. He and the more expensive Wil Myers (111 wRC+, .225 ISO, 39.4 Hard% vs RHP since 2017) share a 131 wRC+ over the last week, each with a hard hit rate above 45% (Myers 71.4%). They are the only two batters in the lineup who can combine a wRC+ above 100 with an ISO above .160 against RHP since last season.

Kyle Freeland has a career .322 wOBA against RHBs at Coors (61.5 GB%, 0.8 Hard-Soft%)

The San Diego Padres have an implied run line above 4.5 at Coors tonight, but...this is not a pretty spot. In addition to weather concerns, the Padres are down almost an entire middle of the order (Hosmer, Villanueva, Renfroe) against a lefty with some extreme splits. Kyle Freeland doesn't miss a lot of right-handed bats (3.8% at home in his career), but has held RHBs to a .322 wOBA at Coors due to a 61.5 GB% and 0.8 Hard-Soft%. If you believe Franchy Cordero (88 wRC+, .182 ISO, 44.4 Hard% vs LHP) can make contact (LHBs 34.1 K% vs Freeland at Coors), he could be the most interesting choice (LHBs .346 wOBA, 35.6 GB%, 36.7 Hard% vs Freeland at Coors). The Padres still have a few right-handed bats proficient against LHP though: Manuel Margot (106 wRC+, .181 ISO), Wil Myers (109 wRC+, .201 ISO, 52.5 Hard%), and Jose Pirela (141 wRC+, .237 ISO), all in the same range as Cordero on FanDuel, but a bit more expensive on DraftKings.

Christian Villanueva (153 wRC+, .250 ISO vs RHP) faces a reverse platoon righty at Coors

The San Diego Padres have a team 46 wRC+ over the last week with an astounding 34.1 K%. To that, they add a 27.7 K% and 84 wRC+ against RHP. Not very encouraging for a team with a 4.77 implied run line tonight. Nor can players rely on Chad Bettis and his 15.5 K%. His 1.44 ERA is pumped by a .217 BABIP and 95.2 LOB%. His career has resulted in some strange platoon splits, where he's actually been better at home (4.28 FIP) and against LHBs (.320 wOBA, 53.5 GB%). Right-handed hitters have a nearly 50 point higher wOBA and eight point lower ground ball rate. Christian Villanueva (153 wRC+, .250 ISO vs RHP career, 278 wRC+, 43.8 Hard% last seven days) becomes the most interesting hitter here at a cost of exactly $4K on both sites. Additionally, Wil Myers (108 wRC+, .223 ISO since last year) has hit same handed pitching well too with a stark $1.6K price discrepancy between sites. Eric Hosmer (146 wRC+, .189 ISO) is playable in this environment, but may end up a bit over-owned for all of the ground balls he's likely to produce in this matchup. Francy Cordero (107 wRC+, .258 ISO, 45.6 Hard% vs RHP career) may be the more interesting left-handed bat here for $500 less on DraftKings.

Padres RHB FTW

Derek Holland is one of the most hittable pitchers in Major League Baseball, especially if you swing from the right side of the plate. In 2017 Holland allowed a .430 wOBA and a 41.3% hard hit rate, to go along with a whopping 26 home runs to right-handed batters. That pretty much puts all the San Diego Padres right-handed hitters in play tonight, with Jose Pirela and Franchy Cordero leading the way in terms of point per dollar.

Unappetizing matchup between the Giants (Stratton) and Padres (Mitchell) only on the FanDuel main slate

San Francisco at San Diego is not on the main DraftKings slate, but is on the five game board at FanDuel. It's an unappetizing matchup from any angle, pitting Chris Stratton against Bryan Mitchell in a negative run environment. Both teams have a below average wRC+ with a strikeout rate above 25% against RHP this year. Mitchell has walked nine and struck out one in two starts this year, somehow nearly cutting in half a 6.4 SwStr% from last year. Stratton had a useful 19.9 K% last season until you realize that aside from striking out 10 batters twice, he failed to strike out more than four in all but one of his other eight starts last year. He walked four in his last start and has not exceeded four strikeouts in either of his two starts. If you must, Brandon Belt (131 wRC+, .409 xwOBA, .252 ISO vs RHP since 2017) is a cheap bat ($2.4K), who's a much better hitter than his home park lets him look and LHBs have a .359 wOBA against Mitchell since last season. Eric Hosmer (151 wRC+, .191 ISO), Joe Panik (112 wRC+, .166 ISO), Cory Spangenberg (115 wRC+, .170 ISO), Jose Pirela (109 wRC+, .162) and Andrew McCutchen (102 wRC+, .163 ISO) are the only other bats who are even average against RHP since last year. Though Franchy Cordero (95 wRC+, .225 ISO, 40 Hard%) hits the ball hard and is in the leadoff spot at a minimum cost ($2K). The San Francisco lineup is not yet confirmed.

San Diego offers plenty of value this afternoon

According to our MLB projections model, the Padres offer three of the top ten points-per-dollar options on DraftKings and five of the top 16 on FanDuel (Franchy Cordero is not available on the site). They currently own the second-highest projected run total on the early slate (4.76) as they get set to take on Amir Garrett of the Reds. San Diego has won the first two games of the series with an average score of 7.5 - Franchy Cordero has been stellar, hitting three dingers over those two games. He'll be in the lineup again today in the two-hole and it looks like another favorable matchup. Although we only have a tiny sample size of 36 LHB faced, Garrett has allowed a .372 ISO to LHB in his rookie season. Some of that was bad luck, considering his 40.0% HR/FB rate though. Franchy has a small sample himself with just 56 total plate appearances this season and only eight against a lefty. Overall, he has a 38.7% FB% and 45.2% Hard% - he's certainly risky, but there's no denying he's hot right now. We have more data on Garrett vs RHB - 182 batters - and his statistics are poor: 40.3% Hard%, 40.8% FB%, .383 wOBA, and .312 ISO. At the same time his BABIP is .248, which suggests he hasn't been unlucky when it comes to batters getting on base, and he has the highest xFIP against righties on the slate (5.68). This is great news for Will Myers, who's pounded RHP over the last two seasons for a 43.5% Hard%, enabling him to post a .192 ISO and .346 wOBA. Hunter Renfroe has a smaller data set available (79 plate appearances vs. 226 for Myers), but he's clobbered RHP for a .309 ISO and .432 wOBA during his time in the bigs. Myers tops our points-per-dollar projections on DK and comes in at tenth on FD while Renfroe is eighth on both sites. There is some concern with Myers' high K% of 26.5% over the past two years in split, but Garrett has a 15.4% K% against RHB so far in his career. In addition to those guys, Jose Pirela and Yangervis Solarte present a couple more righty bats available at a reasonable price this afternoon.

Lots of cheap, top of the lineup Outfield options to compliment high priced pitching tonight

Players looking to pay up for Clayton Kershaw and several expensive bats have a lot of cheap options at the tops of some decently projected lineups tonight to help them along. Ryan Raburn bats second for the minimum on DraftKings against the R.A. Dickey in one of the two lineups projected for six runs tonight. The Padres open with Jose Pirela ($3.1K DK, $2.5K FD) and Franchy Cordero ($2.5K DK, $2.4K FD) against Scott Feldman tonight. Jaycob Brugman ($2.2K either site) leads off for Oakland against Jose Urena. Joey Rickard ($3.2K DK, $2.5K FD) leads off against Derek Holland. We've covered several OF options, but there are some infield cheapies as well. Wilmer Flores has three HRs against Jon Lester and bats second. Further down in the order, we find Matt Davidson ($2.9K DK, $2.4K FD), who homered last night and has a .250 ISO vs RHP since last season.

Bryce Harper projects as tonight's top hitter, Andrew Benintendi a top value on FanDuel

Although projected by Vegas as the top offense tonight, only Mookie Betts appears among the top five overall batters via RotoGrinders Player Projections for the Red Sox. Bryce Harper gets the highest projected point total tonight as LHBs have a .334 wOBA and 33.5 Hard% against Mike Foltynewicz since last season. Andrew Benintendi is potentially in line to return great value on FanDuel tonight for just $2.8K (4.14 Pt/$/K), while DraftKings players might want to look towards potential top of the order bats in San Diego, either Jose Pirela (3 Pt/$/K) or Franchy Cordero (2.83 Pt/$/DK), each less than $2.5K against Bronson Arroyo.
