Gordon Beckham Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Nick Castellanos (abdominal) scratched Sunday; Gordon Beckham replaces

Castellanos has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in the Sunday’s matchup against the Seattle Mariners due to abdominal tightness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Gordon Beckham, who will now play second base and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Tigers batting order but, most notably, bumps Brandon Dixon up to cleanup, respectively. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Detroit faces off against left-hander Tommy Milone on the road this afternoon.

Niko Goodrum (illness) scratched Friday; Gordon Beckham replaces

Goodrum has been scratched from the Detroit Tigers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Friday’s matchup against the Oakland Athletics due to an illness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup Gordon Beckham, who will now play shortstop and slot directly into Goodrum’s vacated leadoff spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Tigers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Frankie Montas at home this evening.

Tigers Stack an Intriguing Option vs. Pineda

Pineda has been largely the same pitcher this year that we’re used to seeing: he limits walks and gets a decent amount of Ks, but gives up lots of loud contact and seemingly always has an ERA much higher than his estimators. This year, Pineda is giving up more loud contact than ever with a 45.9% hard contact rate, a 1.85 HR/9 and just a 36.7% GB rate, all career worsts. He also has a 90.9 aEV and .357 xwOBA allowed, also career worsts. Pineda has actually been worse vs. RHB this year with a .381 xwOBA allowed so far. Nick Castellanos (.365 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018), Miguel Cabrera (.354), Gordon Beckham (.345, 83 PA), Ronny Rodriguez (.291) and John Hicks (.287) are right-handed options in the Tigers projected order. Christin Stewart (.365) and Jeimer Candelario (.281) project to hit in the top third of the order and are also in play. Ronny Rodriguez has been the Tigers hottest hitter over the past 10 days with a .398 xwOBA. Tigers bats should be pretty contrarian given just a 3.75 implied line Saturday afternoon in Minnesota.

Mike Zunino has a 27.3% Barrels/BBE mark this season

It's an under-statement to suggest a significant drop off in production from Robinson Cano to Gordon Beckham, but it might not be enough for Jake Odorizzi, a fly ball pitcher with a substantial reverse split (RHBs .342 xwOBA since 2017, LHBs .322). Also consider that Minnesota is a positive run environment, which plays friendly towards right-handed power and the Mariners could look even better than their current 4.67 implied run line. Odorizzi has just a 26 GB% this year with a 12.5% Barrels/BBE that's the only mark above 10% on the board. The three through seven hitters all have an ISO of .200 or better with a wRC+ above 105 vs RHP over the last calendar year. Mike Zunino (146 wRC+, .306 ISO) is actually the high man on both counts. His 27.3% Barrels/BBE overall this season is one of the best marks in baseball. At moderate costs across the board, a Seattle middle of the order stack or individual bats could pay off tonight, though players will want to double check a weather forecast that suggest potential rain issues.

Jace Peterson scratched from the Braves lineup Friday

Peterson has been scratched from the lineup with a left ankle sprain for tonight's home game against the Washington Nationals. Gordon Beckham will replace him at 2B and bat from the six-spot in the order. Given the matchup with Max Scherzer, this news has little to no effect on tonight's MLB DFS slate.

Jeff Locke owns a 3.2% K-BB% to RHB this season

There's no debating that Locke (5.12 SIERA) has been one of the worst starting pitchers in the majors. He does get what seems to be an exploitable matchup against a Braves offense that has been brutal against left-handed pitching as a whole this season (73 wRC+, .282 wOBA, .103 ISO). However, with the acquisition of Matt Kemp (167 wRC+, .415 wOBA, .340 ISO vs LHP), Atlanta suddenly becomes that much more formidable against left-handed pitching. Locke has been horrible against righties (.371 wOBA, 5.07 xFIP) so that's definitely where we will want to attack him in this matchup. Outside of Kemp, Gordon Beckham (112 wRC+, .339 wOBA, .189 ISO vs LHP) and Anthony Recker are the top stacking options given their price tags and typically shallow positions. Locke has been better against lefties, but Freddie Freeman (141 wRC+, .382 wOBA, .214 ISO vs LHP) could be a nice contrarian option at first base given the success he has had against left-handed pitching.

Jon Gray has at least eight Ks in three of last four, faces worst offense on road and vs RHP at Coors

The Braves were shut down by a reverse platoon pitcher in Coors last night and face a better one with much more upside tonight. Jon Gray has pitched at least into the seventh innings with exactly eight strikeouts in three of four starts, two of them at home and the last one in Atlanta. The Braves are the worst offense in the majors vs RHP (74 wRC+) and on the road (73 wRC+). Coors merely bumps them up somewhere around average. With a price tag around $8K, Gray can be used tonight. Even though the Braves don't have a top run projection tonight, 4.7 runs isn't too shabby though and we still want to consider a bat like Freddie Freeman (133 wRC+, .234 ISO vs RHP since 2015) for a reasonable cost at $4.6K or less in a great park. Perhaps more interesting though are Adonis Garcia (82 wRC+, .153 ISO vs RHP career) and Gordon Beckham (114 wRC+, .157 ISO vs RHP this season), not because their numbers are strong, but because they each cost below $4K in the top half of a lineup at Coors and RHBs have a slightly higher wOBA against Gray (.308 this year, .336 career).

Chad Bettis has a 13.5 K-BB% and 13.8 HR/FB at home since last season with a 55.3 GB% vs LHBs this year

While we never want to write off an offense in Colorado, consider that the Braves are so bad (74 wRC+ on the road and vs RHP) that the massive Coors bump might only make them average. Chad Bettis hasn’t been terrible at home in his career according to his peripherals, despite his 6.37 ERA. He actually has a and those would be perfectly league average numbers this season. It's no surprise that he has an elevated BABIP at home as the park incites it, but consider that he has equaled and improved his SwStr% in six straight starts, all in double digits. He also has a reverse split this year with LHBs having just an average .326 wOBA and 55.3 GB% against him, while he'll only face two RHBs (.364 wOBA and 10 of his 14 HRs). Gordon Beckham (112 wRC+, .150 ISO vs RHP this season) may be the value play here and you never want to count out Freddie Freeman (114 wRC+, .241 ISO vs RHP this season) in a great park, but DraftKings players especially might want to consider Bettis at a low cost with all of the highly priced and projected bats tonight. There are four teams projected for a higher run total than the Braves tonight and that's something that hardly ever happens at Coors.

Cody Reed has been hit incredibly hard (42.5 Hard%, 40.9 HR/FB), but misses bats too (24.0 K%)

Cody Reed has a 42.5 Hard%, which has led to a ridiculous .380 BABIP in addition to nine of his 22 fly balls leaving the yard. That's terrible, but a 40.9 HR/FB has to come down just by dumb luck. The rest of it has been a tendency to predictably groove his fastball whenever he gets behind with nearly of the damage coming on straight, hard stuff because he doesn't really have a fastball that blows people away. His slider, which he really only throws while ahead, has led to a 24.0 K%, so there is upside, furthered by facing the Braves tonight (74 wRC+, 7.5 HR/FB). This is a spot where a player with a high risk tolerance could consider him tonight, though his $8.1K cost on DraftKings makes it more difficult. Due to his issues, we're not taking cheap Braves bats off the board at all. Anthony Recker (118 wRC+, .250 ISO vs LHP since 2015) does have some power and can serve as a punt catcher, while Adonis Garcia (116 wRC+, .176 ISO vs LHP since 2015) is another great punt option at 3B with both below $3K on either site. Leadoff man Gordon Beckham (124 wRC+, .214 ISO vs LHP this season) has a -86 wRC+ over the last week, but is another affordable option (below $3.5K on either site) in the leadoff spot with RHBs having a .454 wOBA against Reed in a power friendly park.

Finnegan has allowed 17 HRs to RHBs this year, cheap Braves bats could be of use with expensive pitching

While the Braves bats never rate as particularly strong, they may be of use at low costs tonight against Brandon Finnegan, who has a 12% walk rate and allowed as many HRs as strikeouts in his last start (four each). LHBs and RHBs each have a .327 wOBA against him since last season with RHBs having a higher hit hard rate (36.1%) by over three and a half points. While his 18 HRs have been evenly split home and away, 17 have gone to RHBs this year. Freddie Freeman (150 wRC+, .211 ISO vs LHP this year), while not cheap, is the top bat. Adonis Garcia (103 wRC+ vs LHP career) may be the value play on DK out of the two spot for $3.3K, while Jeff Francoeur (113 wRC+, .165 ISO vs LHP this season) costs just $2.6K on FanDuel. Leadoff many Gordon Beckham costs around $3.5K on either site, but has a 141 wRC+ and .231 ISO vs LHP this year.
