Timberwolves plan to sign Greg Monroe for the remainder of the season.
Greg Monroe is expected to play
Monroe and Scott are both in tonight, and while this muddles the Sixers frontcourt bench roles somewhat, Monroe is likely the highest point per minute producer, and has had some success in Joel Embiid's stead when asked to soak up minutes. The Raptors don't have a viable defender for Monroe, and even if they did, odds are they would utilize those resources elsewhere against a potent Sixers offense, so Monroe, who is very cheap, is very much in play as a punt on this slate. Scott also playing is slightly less interesting since he plays further from the rim and may not produce at a high rate even if given ample minutes.
Greg Monroe and Mike Scott are listed as questionable
This is something of a change for Monroe, as he was considered probable until this announcement from coach Brown. If both were to miss, this could mean a ton of run for Joel Embiid as Boban has not been viewed as a viable big in this series, and could also mean an increase for Jonah Bolden if Boban doesn't get whatever backup big minutes are available. If just Monroe were to miss, Mike Scott himself could be a potential punt play when ruled in, and conversely, if just Scott were to miss, Monroe would be considered a prime punt play soaking up a ton of second unit usage when Embiid rests. Lots of scenarios to consider here on a somewhat fungible Sixers backup frontcourt unit.
Greg Monroe is expected to play
Will be interesting to see if Monroe truly gets some run here, or if he is a starter in name only before giving way to Boban and then the Sixers ultimately going small. We don't yet know what this year's iteration of the playoff 76ers looks like with Embiid ruled out, but we are about to find out.
Kyle Lowry and Danny Green will play tonight, Greg Monroe returns to starting lineup
After missing the last few games Kyle Lowry returns to the lineup tonight vs The 76's. Coach Nick Nurse said that everyone who traveled with the team will be available to play tonight. Nurse also announced that Greg Monroe will enter the starting lineup along with Danny Green who missed last nights game. The Raptors will not have Serge Ibaka Kawhi Leonard and Jonas Valanciunas as all three stayed home and did not travel with the team. Always a great point per minute producer, Monroe will draw the daunting task of defending the talented Joel Embid.
Contingent on Serge
Greg Monroe's rosterability is almost completely contingent on Serge Ibaka's status. If Serge is inactive, Monroe would be one of the top value options on the slate. Conversely, if Serge is active, Monroe's playing time would likely be stuck in the teens making him hard to justify on a full ten game slate.
Last Man In
So, if you haven't already seen, the Raptors will be without Lowry, Valanciunas, and Ibaka tonight. Without their two main bigs, Monroe should be forced into the starting rotation and should be forced to play a decent amount of minutes. On the year in 119 minutes, Monroe is averaging 1.1 fantasy points per minute and a 23.7% usage rate. This is one of the best salary saving spots on the entire slate (outside of Bamba) and will probably be lower owned than it should be because of all the value. Look for Monroe to get around 20-25 minutes and average a fantasy point per minute.
Greg Monroe (back) out Tuesday
Monroe is a new addition to the Raptors' injury report and won't be available to play in Tuesday's matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies due to back spasms. Monroe has mostly been a DNP-CD this season, as he's appeared in only nine games and accumulated just 70 total minutes, so his absence won't have much effect, if any, on the remainder of the Toronto frontcourt rotation. Per usual, Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka will continue to split all of the available center minutes when healthy and if the Raptors are in competitive game scripts.
Paying Down at Center could be Contrarian
With so much value available tonight, it will be a popular strategy to pay up at center. I'm not a huge fan of Brook Lopez or Nikola Vucevic, so I will be looking to pay down for one of the Celtics' centers. Greg Monroe has averaged 1.11 fantasy points per minute this season and has been productive time and time again in these situations. The Celtics are basically playing without half of their roster, so I'm expecting Monroe to see minutes in the mid-20s, as they square off against the Wizards.
