Jake Lamb Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
D-Backs in an intriguing spot vs. Garrett Richards
Richards has made two starts so far in 2019, totaling just 5 and 1/3 innings pitched between the two. He’s thrown just 144 innings since 2016 and made his debut earlier this month on the 16th after not appearing in an MLB game since July of the previous season. He’s unsurprisingly shaking off some rust and has posted a .374 xwOBA allowed so far in 27 batters faced. The D-Backs don’t have a great lineup, but they are in a good spot here and are very cheap across the industry. Alex Avila (.355 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Kevin Cron (.346), Jake Lamb (.333), Eduardo Escobar (.323), Nick Ahmed (.317), Josh Rojas (.317), Tim Locastro (.306) and Jarrod Dyson (.273) are all options in the D-Backs’ projected order. Lamb has been on fire with a .443 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks and somehow costs just $2.8k on Draftkings. Avila is another great value option at just $3.3k on DK. Besides Escobar, all D-Backs hitters are $4k or less on Draftkings and $2.9k or less on Fanduel despite a healthy 5.24 implied total tonight vs. Richards and the Padres.
Cheap Lefties
Adam Wainwright has been awesome in real life over the past month, with just one run allowed in four September starts. While he's clearly doing something right, there has been a ton of good fortune involved as well, as he's sitting with a 0% HR/FB rate and .271 BABIP over the past month despite a dangerously low 14.8% strikeout rate and average 39.6% hard hits allowed. Batted balls won't go his way forever, and his 44% hard hits and .356 wOBA allowed to lefties this season puts the cheap Arizona bats like Jake Lamb (53% HH) and Josh Rojas (41% HH) into play tonight for savings.
Finally Past The Injuries?
Jake Lamb is nowhere near where he was a couple of seasons ago, and a lot of that has to do with injuries. He's certainly looked a lot better recently and draws a really good matchup in Coors tonight. With his struggles, he's priced under $3,000 on FanDuel tonight. Jon Gray has a .354 wOBA with a .182 ISO and a 32.1% hard to soft contact ratio against left-handed hitters this season. I really like the price point and the fact he's on the road, which could lead to an extra at bat in the ninth.
D-Backs are an interesting contrarian stack option vs. Marlins
The Diamondbacks will face Elieser Hernandez this afternoon, who showed some promise as a starter earlier in the year but has been in the bullpen for almost the past month. Recently announced to return to the rotation, Hernandez will be on a low pitch count this afternoon and isn’t someone to necessarily shy away from as he did have a 4.87 FIP and 2.0 HR/9 over 26 2/3 innings as a starter. The D-Backs project to see plenty of plate appearances vs. the Miami bullpen, who has allowed a 7th worst 4.87 xFIP on the year. Ketel Marte (138 wRC+, .232 ISO vs. RHP this year), David Peralta (128 wRC+, .220 ISO), Alex Avila (126 wRC+, .301 ISO), Jake Lamb (109 wRC+, .167 ISO), and Eduardo Escobar (103 wRC+, .227 ISO) are the best options in the D-Backs order this afternoon. Jake Lamb has been their hottest hitter with a 154 wRC+ over the past 30 days, and is one of their more affordable hitters across the industry. D-Backs hitters will also have the advantage of an extremely hitter-friendly umpire in Alfonso Marquez. Certainly not a slam dunk play by any means (especially being in pitcher-friendly Marlins Park) a D-Backs stack is a way to get super contrarian on this slate as they are almost guaranteed to have very low ownership. They currently have a 4.32 implied line vs. Hernandez and the Marlins Sunday afternoon.
Low-Owned, High-Upside
For whatever reason I have started to stack the Diamondbacks more frequently and the only thing I can truly link it to is the return of Jake Lamb into their lineup. Sure, I may have a little bias for Lamb, but the addition of his bat does make Arizona all that more solid offensively against right-handed pitching. Lamb himself is the owner of a career .217 ISO against RHP while Ketel Marte, Eduardo Escobar, and even Christian Walker have all shown strong upside offensively. While Jarrod Dyson doesn’t have as strong of an offensive skill-set as the others, he does have plenty of stolen base upside in this matchup as PlateIQ gives him one of the highest Stolen Base Ratings (78.71) on the slate.
Despite Asher Wojciechowski breaking everyone’s hearts who stacked the Red Sox yesterday, we should not be afraid to continue to target Baltimore’s below average starters and even worse bullpen. Once ownership is taken into consideration, the Diamondbacks are my favorite stack of the night. Despite the favorable matchup, SlateIQ has total Diamondbacks ownership projected as the third lowest of the slate at 16%.
Sneaky Stack
Arizona is a team that I will be stacking today against Adam Wainwright. Arizona has a few good lefty bats to attack Wainwright with. Wainwright has really struggled this year with lefties, giving up a .241 ISO, .407 wOBA, and a 45% hard hit rate. I will be looking to target Marte, Escobar, Lamb, and Dyson in my stack, which should go overlooked in tournaments.
GPP Contrarian Plays
Sometimes, in order to win on a four game slate, it's all about being contrarian. Nobody likes to play hitters in San Francisco's spacious park, but the Diamondbacks do have a reasonably potent lineup that now has Jake Lamb back from the injured list. They also get a matchup against Tyler Beede, who has had major control issues since arriving at the major league level. That's always a recipe for a potential upside stack, and the Diamondbacks will carry minuscule ownership compared to the Dodgers tonight. Guys like Marte, Escobar, and Lamb hit in the middle of the order and all have some pop, and I like the GPP potential here.
Early game in Miami projects as a potential pitcher's duel
The Diamondbacks and Marlins are available on the FanDuel afternoon slate, but not DraftKings. Both teams are below four implied runs with the Marlins (3.05) the low team on the board for the afternoon. Zack Greinke had been struggling, but snapped out of it with six shutout innings (seven strikeouts) in Pittsburgh last time out. His 26 K% is third best on the board for the entire day, but his 9.7% Barrels/BBE is second worst. Considering the park and opposing offense, there's less concern about the latter today. He's one of the top pitchers on the FanDuel board, facing an offense with a sub-90 wRC+ at home and vs RHP and without one of their top hitters (Realmuto). They have a 16.0 K-BB% vs RHP as well. Derek Dietrich (129 wRC+, .211 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Justin Bour (148 wRC+, .262 ISO) are playable Miami bats. Trevor Richards may be an option as well. He's had a 24.5 K% since moving to the upper levels of the minors last year (20 AA & AAA starts) and has a 20.9 K% through nine major league starts this year, though he does walk too many (10.5%). The Diamondbacks have an 81 wRC+ and 26 K% vs RHP. David Peralta (124 wRC+, .221 ISO) has the top wRC+ and ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year in today's lineup. Jake Lamb (103 wRC+, .221 ISO), Paul Goldschmidt (111 wRC+, .209 ISO) and Daniel Descalso (112 wRC+, .195 ISO) have all been a bit above average with some power, though Miami greatly suppresses the HR ball.
Pirates and D'Backs have scored 35 runs last two days, but focus should be on pitching today
The Pirates and Diamondbacks have played two straight blowout affaird with 35 total runs scored, putting the humidor to shame, but pitching should be the focus this afternoon with Jameson Taillon facing Zack Greinke. Both teams have an implied run line below four. Zack Greinke misses more bats (25.9 K%, 11.7 SwStr%), but also allows harder contact (.329 xwOBA, 89.6 mph aEV, 9.9% Barrels/BBE). He would also appear to have the more difficult matchup against a Pittsburgh team without much power (98 wRC+, 9.6 HR/FB, 10.5 Hard-Soft% vs RHP), but also without a lot of swing and miss (19.2 K% vs RHP). Taillon misses fewer bats (22.7 K%, 9.7 SwStr%), but manages contact better (.280 xwOBA, 51.2 GB%, 86.6 mph aEV) and has the better matchup against a horrific offense against RHP this season (79 wRC+, 25 K%). Recently, his strikeouts have been up (26.2% last four starts), but he's also allowed 12 ERs over his last four starts as well (although with just a 63.5 LOB%). Lineups for this game have not yet been confirmed, but if looking to oppose one of these pitchers, power is what you're looking for in the Pittsburgh lineup. Greinke has held batters from either side of the plate to a .310 or lower wOBA and xwOBA since last season, but both have an equal 38% hard hit rate. Francisco Cervelli, Austin Meadows and Gregory Polanco all tie for the team lead with exactly a .192 ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year. Cervelli (.372) and Colin Moran (.368) are the best by xwOBA. Taillon has a much larger split, ceding some 60 points to LHBs in terms of wOBA and xwOBA since last year. Paul Goldschmidt (110 wRC+, .207 ISO) remains so hot he has to be considered (407 wRC+, 81 Hard% last seven days), but Jake Lamb (109 wRC+, .220 ISO), Daniel Descalso (119 wRC+, .195 ISO) and David Peralta (120 wRC+, .204 ISO) are likely your top LH bats here.
Chad Bettis continues to be propped up by a career-low .270 BABIP, despite 35.4% HH% and 88.2 aEV
Bettis comes into Saturday's matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks following three consecutive blowup home outings at Coors Field, as he has allowed at least five earned runs on each occasion and failed to strike out more than three hitters in all but one of those starts. Bettis had been a candidate for regression all year long prior to this most recent stretch, so it appears that some that regression has finally come to fruition, though it may be far from over with his 4.66 SIERA still more than a half run higher than his 4.06 ERA through 12 appearances this season. The low 16.0% strikeout rate is nothing new for Bettis, as his career mark is just 16.6%, but the elevated 7.5% walk rate certainly is uncharacteristic, especially over last season's pristine 5.5% walk rate, which has greatly contributed to his rising ERA and SIERA over the last month. Bettis has exhibited some slight reverse splits this season, so a right-handed hitter like Paul Goldschmidt (40.7% HH%, 0.217 ISO, 0.461 xwOBA vs RHP since 2017) remains firmly in play for all formats and his projected value shouldn't be dinged just because he sacrifices the platoon advantage in this matchup. That said, Bettis is still more than attackable from the left-side of the plate as well, which makes Jake Lamb (0.250 ISO, 0.447 xwOBA vs RHP since 2017), Daniel Descalso (39.7% HH%, 0.205 ISO, 0.383 xwOBA vs RHP since 2017), and David Peralta (40.8% HH%, 0.374 xwOBA vs RHP since 2017) the top Dodgers lefties to target. Meanwhile, Jon Jay and Alex Avila (53.3% HH%, 0.580 xwOBA vs RHP since 2017) are certainly worthy options to round out a Diamondbacks stack in tournaments, especially Jay with his high 84.9% contact rate and above-average 40.1% hard-hit percentage at the top off the order, despite his other subpar advanced statistics this season, which keep him from being a viable one-off target given his inability to produce substantial upside without the assistance of his teammates more often than not.
