NE RB James White (hip) expected to miss remainder of 2021 season

After suffering a hip injury during the Patriots last game, White is expected to miss the rest of the regular season according to Schefter. The Patriots backfield is likely to become even more muddled, especially since White's role was arguably the most secure as the passing down back. With the Patriots playing on Sunday Night Football, the roles are even more crucial since they play on a showdown slate. Damien Harris should continue his role as the early down back, but may get a few more carries. Brandon Bolden saw some snaps last game as a pass-down back, but that my have been out of necessity. J.J. Taylor will likely take the receiving work, while Rhamondre Stevenson will most likely be activated and chip in as well. In Brady's return game to New England, the Pats certainly will miss White.

James White 2021 Fantasy Outlook

Per RotoGrinders NFL player projections, James White is expected to be the fantasy RB49. He's being drafted on Underdog Fantasy as RB49 at pick 172, compared to his RotoGrinders ranking of 172 as of July. We currently expect 137 yards rushing during the first 17 weeks (Rank 75) with a 8% share of team carries. We also expect a 10% target share which amounts to a projection of 54 targets (Rank 20) and 369 receiving yards (Rank 17).

White has a fighting chance in PPR formats thanks to his expected continued use as a passing option out of the backfield, but the opportunity for him to ascend to a larger and more impactful role for fantasy is small. The Patriots have at least 3 backs on the roster that are more likely to serve as a primary runner and goal line option. This is before we even mention Cam Newton as a possible goal line threat as well. The bottom line is that he is fairly priced compared to projections, and his range of outcomes includes far fewer upside scenarios that most. He's somebody you draft for floor, and not if you are needing a high ceiling.

James White is active today and could see some additional work with Damien Harris ruled out. Sony Michel should get the most carries of the RBs, while J.J. Taylor will work as the third RB.

Jakeem Grant not expected to play; DeVante Parker, James White expected to play

Jakeem Grant is not expected to play today, while DeVante Parker is reportedly expected to play, although we will still need to see confirmation when inactives come out. Patriots' RB James White is expected to play, and there doesn't seem to be a real risk of him sitting. With Damien Harris already ruled out, James White could see a slightly elevated work load, although the Patriots also have Sony Michel.

Sony Michel is inactive today, despite being activated off of IR this week. Michel may be ready to return, but the play of Damien Harris, along with Rex Burkhead and James White, means Michel is not yet needed.

Patriots activating RB Sony Michel off Injured Reserve

The Patriots are activating RB Sony Michel off injured reserve, meaning the Patriots RB situation could be even more crowded than usual. Damien Harris handled the clear bulk of RB carries last week and seems to have established himself as the top back, but Michel returning adds risk. Rex Burkhead and James White are both also factors for the Patriots.

Damien Harris is active Sunday, giving the Patriots a three-headed RB group, where the top performer will be tough to predict and likely TD dependent. It's likely to rain for much of the game Sunday, so the bad weather could give a boost to the RBs.

James White (personal) returns to practice Wednesday

White is back with the Patriots and is participating in Wednesday's practice, which puts him firmly on track to play in Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs after missing two games following the tragic death of his father in a car accident. Rex Burkhead had a monster fantasy performance in Week 3, but he essentially split backfield work with Sony Michel in a game where New England was comfortably ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders for a large portion of the game. The likely return of White this weekend will only further muddy the projected outlook of this running back committee, and that's without factoring in the potential presence of Damian Harris, who was just activated from injured reserve and now has a maximum 21-day window to practice with the team before returning to the active roster and doesn't even rule him out of being available to play this Sunday afternoon.

James White (personal) officially ruled out for Sunday

White was understandably away from the team this entire week following the passing of his father, and he's officially been ruled out of Sunday's Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders as he continues to tend to personal matters. With White absent for last Sunday's loss, Rex Burkhead predictably led the Patriots with a 72.5% snap rate and accumulated six targets, making him the clear running back to target if aiming to do so in daily fantasy formats this weekend. Sony Michel still only totaled seven carries in a relatively closely-contested game, so his role in this offense may be nonexistent unless the Patriots get out to a huge lead. Even then, there's an abundance of value options to choose from in Week 3, so Michel can pretty easily be eliminated from consideration for fantasy purposes.
