Netminder has massive upside against slumping team
The Sharks have dropped four straight as they have struggled to overcome injuries to Erik Karlsson. Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture are the latest who have missed action. Last night the Sharks were upset by the Kings 4-2 as Los Angeles' top line sparked a third period rally. Gibson checks in at $7,100 on DraftKings and should see a good number of shots in this favorable spot as the Sharks are averaging the fourth-most shots on goal per game (33.4 GF/G). Gibson is a strong pivot from Holtby in tournaments.
Goalie Looking to End Winless Drought
It seems strange to target a goalie who hasn't won in his last six starts, but that's where we are on a short slate for tonight. Although Gibson's record is nothing special, his underlying numbers aren't bad (.923 SV% and 2.64 GAA). Tonight, he faces a putrid Ottawa team who is 4-14-1 on the road this year. Anaheim is a huge favorite (-220) and I expect Gibson to pick up the all-important win bonus tonight.
Talent Wins Out with This Goalie
I'm not in love with any of the goalies on this slate, so when in doubt, I'll go with the most talented. In my opinion, that's John Gibson. Gibson hasn't been helped out my his team with goal support, but his underlying numbers are solid. He has a .925 SV% and 2.59 GAA. In his last six games, he hasn't allowed more than 3 goals, so the blowup games are extremely rare. The matchup at home against the Stars isn't ideal, but I think he manages to pick up the all-important win bonus.
Massive upside for this goalie
The Anaheim Ducks have quietly won four of their last five games including in Tampa and the following night in Sunrise against the Florida Panthers. Gibson flashed his massive upside as he turned aside 42 shots to edge the Panthers 3-2. Gibson draws a mouth-watering matchup to pile up the saves again tonight as Carolina sports a league-best 58.07 CF% at 5v5 in Raleigh. As has been the case over the years, the Hurricanes tend not to convert their shots to goals. Gibson could be in for another big performance tonight for a surging Anaheim team.
This goalie has big upside in a tough road matchup
John Gibson has been the best goaltender this season as he has seen the second-most shots (538) of all netminders in the National Hockey League. Gibson has stopped 501 of those for a sharp .931 save percentage. While playing in Vegas has been a big challenge for visitors, Vegas has been unable to convert their scoring chances. Despite averaging the third-most shots on goal per game (34.7 SF/G), Vegas is averaging the third-fewest goals per game (2.39 GF/G), just ahead of Anaheim (2.21 GF/G). With the likely popularity of Marc-Andre Fleury and Vegas' top line for that matter, Gibson is an interesting way to approach tournaments on this short slate as we know he is capable of turning aside 30-40 shots and grabbing a win.
Goalie showdown at the United Center
The Anaheim Ducks have been skating on thin ice due to a number of injuries as they have allowed the most high danger chances (106) in the National Hockey League at 5v5 with the Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks right behind them (104). Anaheim did get their captain Ryan Getzlaf back last time out who will help stabilize the team defense, but overall the Ducks have a lot of work to do to clean up their own end. Their biggest strength is John Gibson who has undoubtedly been the best netminder to start the season, stopping 244 of 257 shots faced for a razor sharp .949 save percentage. Gibson is priced up on FanDuel ($9,000) where he is the most expensive goalie, but he is an excellent value on DraftKings ($7,600). Conversely, opposing goalie Corey Crawford is expensive on DraftKings ($8,100), but checks in at just $7,700 on FanDuel, making him an excellent value there where the win is weighted so heavily.
Gibson goes for two in a row
The Ducks have lost Corey Perry for a while but that didn't stop them from putting up five goals against San Jose on opening night. Gibson was able to stop 31 of 33 shots in the win while tonight's opponent in the Arizona Coyotes fired 30 shots on Ben Bishop Thursday night with nothing to show for it. One has to be wary of goalies on the road but Arizona cannot score plain and simple. This is probably why they are only projected to score 2.68 goals this evening.
Gibson Good to Go Sunday Night
Colorado may have one of the more popular top lines from a DFS perspective, but as a whole, the Avalanche are one of the worst offenses in the league. They have a 5v5 expected goal rate that is barely better than that of the Buffalo Sabres, so they are clearly in the basement of the league in terms of expected offense. The top line has been quite quiet of late, so that should help mask a so-so Duck defense. Despite the lackluster play in front of him, Gibson has been fantastic this year. With a .926 all-situation save percentage, Gibson has put forth some big games -- and big fantasy scores -- in much tougher assignments. On home ice and facing a weak overall offense, look for Gibson and the Ducks to get back on track.
This goalie is a bit underpriced tonight
John Gibson is a bit underpriced on DraftKings at $7,800. However, he has a home matchup against the Los Angeles Kings which is a bit difficult. Goaltending is pretty brutal tonight, so I'd rather go with a great goalie in a tougher matchup than a bad goalie in a great matchup. Gibson has a 2.46 goals against average and a .925 save percentage this season which is solid. The Kings are more offensive this year than in previous years with Darryl Sutter as their head coach, but I still will take Gibson in this matchup.
Top Goalie Tonight
The Anaheim Ducks are a huge favorite tonight and despite them being on the road, John Gibson is my top overall option for your cash game lineup. The Vancouver Canucks are in full tank mode, winning just three of their last 14 games, while ranking 24th overall in National Hockey League in goals per game since the All-Star break, and 29th overall in the month of March. Gibson has been outstanding in goal for the Anaheim Ducks since the All-Star break (posting a 1.98 GAA, .938 SV%, and 3 shutouts), and I think we see another strong performance from him tonight at the Rogers Arena.
