Jose Osuna Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Pirates currently have highest implied total on the main slate in Coors vs. Melville

The Pirates get the Coors boost this weekend and will be facing off against Tim Melville tonight. Melville had a 5.42 ERA / 5.76 xFIP over 96 AAA innings this year with a 2.24 HR/9. Melville does have a 0.75 ERA over 12 innings this year but with a 5.29 xFIP, .200 BABIP and 100% LOB rate. Melville projects as a 7+ ERA pitcher going forward by two different projection systems (THE BAT and ZiPS) and is someone to continue to target, especially in Coors. Once Melville is chased from the game, Pirates hitters will see at bats versus a Rockies’ bullpen that has a 6th worst 4.75 SIERA over the past 30 days. Josh Bell (.401 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Starling Marte (.382), Bryan Reynolds (.373), Jose Osuna (.336), Adam Frazier (.330), Colin Moran (.326), Kevin Newman (.305) and Jacob Stallings (.295) are all in play tonight for the Pirates. Marte has been their hottest bat with a .394 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, followed by Josh Bell wit a .379 mark. All Pirates bats are $4.9k+ on Draftkings with the exception of Stallings ($3.4k). On Fanduel, all Pirates bats are under $4k besides Bell, Marte and Newman. The Pirates are currently sitting at a healthy 6.98 implied total.

Pirates bats are a good under-the-radar stack vs. struggling Quintana

With a 27% K rate and 3.21 xFIP through April, it looked as though Jose Quintana had returned to ace form in 2019. It proved to be a fluke, as Quintana has struggled to a 4.93 xFIP, 8.6% K-BB and a .341 xwOBA allowed since May 1st. He’s been even worse of late, with a 4.87 xFIP, 5.21 SIERA, .381 xwOBA allowed and 9% K-BB over the past 30 days. Since May 1st Quintana has allowed a .345 xwOBA vs. RHP compared to a .329 xwOBA vs. LHB, so hitters from both sides of the plate are in play for the Pirates. Jose Osuna (.384 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Josh Bell (.373), Bryan Reynolds (.363), Kevin Newman (.341) and Starling Marte (.332) are all great options who will likely hit in the top half of the order for the Pirates. Osuna has been their hottest hitter over the past 30 days with a .464 xwOBA, followed by catcher Jacob Stallings with a .432 mark. Overall, the Pirates have quietly been one of the hottest offenses in baseball over the past 30 days with a 3rd ranked .343 xwOBA. The Pirates currently have an implied total of just 4.31, which feels too low and will hopefully help them fly under the radar in this matchup.

Middle of the order salary savers

Players paying up for pitcher may want to take a look at the Pirates' lineup tonight. Just third from the bottom at 3.48 implied runs at Wrigley, they are facing Jose Quintana, who has allowed RHBs a .326 wOBA this season. This mark is a bit worse than average, as is his .344 xwOBA, but what Pittsburgh offers is cheap RHBs in the middle of the order. Elias DIaz (154 wRC+, .218 ISO vs LHP this season) bats cleanup for $3.8K on DK ($2.5K on FD) with Jose Osuna (103 wRC+, .245 ISO). Sample sizes are small, but there's enough there to suggest they exceed such a low price tag and help players save salary tonight.

Power Upside With A Cheap Price Tag

I'd be stacking Pittsburgh if they were in a different ballpark tonight, but I don't mind taking a couple of these cheaper guys. Reyes and Osuna are my favorite two cheap guys here. Jose Osuna has a .244 ISO with a .422 CXwOBA against left-handed pitching this season. It's a small sample size but it's worth noting at this price. Skoglund has a .358 wOBA with a .225 ISO and a 45.9% hard-hit rate against right-handed hitters. The cheap righties are in play for me, and I'm hoping Jose Osuna draws the start.

Highest implied run line in this park in a while

Possibly their highest home implied run total of the season and if not, at least in a very long time, the Pirates (5.05) are one of four offenses above five runs as they are set to host the Reds. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .370 wOBA and xwOBA against Homer Bailey this season and the bullpen isn't much better (5.04 FIP last 30 days). Jose Osuna is the only batter among the first seven in the order not above a 105 wRC+ vs RHP this season. Colin Moran (107 wRC+, .121 ISO) the only other one among that group not above a 110 wRC+ and .170 ISO. The top third of the order is very expensive on DraftKings tonight, more affordable on FanDuel. However, Francisco Cervelli (135 wRC+, .191 ISO) in the cleanup spot is less than $4K, along with Corey Dickerson (112 wRC+, .188 ISO) one spot behind him.

Power Upside In Coors

Looking to save money with some cheap Coors bats, Jose Osuna is another person on my list. His strikeout rate is up this season, but so are his power numbers against lefties. In a small sample size, he has a .257 ISO with a .433 CXwOBA against lefties in 2018. Last season he had a .194 ISO with a low wOBA but a very high contact rate. He's a young hitter so seeing numbers like this doesn't worry me very much. Freeland has a .317 wOBA with a .144 ISO and a 16% strikeout rate against righties this season, and while those wOBA and ISO numbers are solid, his xFIP suggests some regression against right-handed hitters.

When Does The Luck Turn?

If you're looking to spend up at pitcher tonight, I think Jose Osuna is way too cheap for his abilities and upside in this matchup. In a small sample size, Osuna has a .251 wOBA against lefties this season, but that doesn't tell the whole story. His .067 BABIP suggest he's been extremely unlucky this season. He has a .304 ISO with a .472 CXwOBA. Matz is allowing a lot of hard contact to righties this season, and his ISO is up to .222 against them as well. Osuna is cheap on all sites, but I really like the $2,000 price on FanDuel tonight.

Arrrrrrrrr-ing for Some Value

Clayton Richard has held LHBs in check for the better part of multiple seasons now, but he struggles against right-handed hitters, who have made hard contact against him 47% of the time this season. His ground ball rate also drops by 10% against righties. You can instantly cross off any Pirates LHBs here, but the RHBs are in play. Starling Marte has been placed on the disabled list, so he is also out. However, this might give us a shot at some value, especially if the likes of Jose Osuna and Sean Rodriguez draw good lineup spots. It’s a small sample size, but both have massive wOBA numbers against lefties so far this season. I like them as individual value plays in cash games.

Hope He Hits 4th Again

Jose Osuna hit fourth for the Pirates against a lefty yesterday, and I'm hoping he draws another good lineup spot tonight. Since being called up last season, Osuna has a .239 ISO with an 84% contact rate against left-handed pitching, and a lot of the contact is medium to hard. He's cheap across the industry tonight, and I'm not too afraid of the matchup with Eric Lauer. He's posted a .476 wOBA with a .317 ISO and a 53.1% hard hit rate against right-handed hitters this season. I like the Pirates tonight, but they're a hard team to figure out, as Osuna and Diaz are both really cheap and they're the two guys I'm going to target the most.

The Pirates have a 5.07 implied run line without a RHB above $3.3K on either site

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the last of four teams that Vegas has above five runs (5.07) this afternoon. Hector Santiago has an ERA and estimators well above five with most of his work coming out of the bullpen this year. While he's had a standard or no platoon split for most of his career, it's been completely reversed since last season. He's faced 101 LHBs, who have a .531 wOBA (.457 xwOBA), while RHBs have a .338 xwOBA that's near his actual career wOBA against them. Not necessarily buying into the small sample size, the Pirates load six RHBs into the lineup, though Starling Marte is not one of them. While Corey Dickerson is a league average bat (100 wRC+) against same-handed pitching over the last calendar year, both he and Gregory Polanco (the other LHB) have an ISO below .140 against same-handed pitching over that span. The really interesting thing is that they are the only two bats in the lineup above $3.3K on either site. While there aren't very many high priced options, Pittsburgh bats will probably get players anywhere they want to go with pitching. While the park does suppress right-handed power, it plays more neutrally to right-handed offense and run scoring overall. None the less, Jose Osuna (113 wRC+, .241 ISO) is an interesting bat in the cleanup spot this afternoon.
