Jose Pirela Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Wil Myers (nose) scratched Wednesday; Jose Pirela replaces

Myers has been scratched from the San Diego Padres original confirmed lineup and will not start in Wednesday’s matchup against the Colorado Rockies due to a nose laceration he sustained during batting practice. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Jose Pirela, who will play second base and slot directly into Myers' vacated second spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Padres lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Jon Gray on the road at Coors Field this evening.

Get Something Cheap

Admittedly, this is a strange looking guy to make the Core Plays list, but this is a really difficult slate to build lineups tonight. We have high end bats priced way up in just OK matchups, and with Verlander in there, there is no way to pay up for more than 1-2 bats at the most. San Diego gets a trip to Texas to face Cole Hamels. Though he has some strikeout ability against righties, and there's always risk with the Padres, Hamels is allowing 47% hard hits and a .217 ISO against righties this season. Pirela should hit in the middle of the lineup and he has the lowest strikeout rate on this team at just 10.9% against lefties. At this salary on this slate, just a couple balls in play in this ballpark is all we can ask for.

Could be some upside to bats with the platoon advantage in San Francisco

Even at less than their best, same-handed batters may not be a successful proposition against either Madison Bumgarner or Tyson Ross. Select batters with the platoon advantage in either lineup could have some merit though. LHBs have a .392 wOBA with equal 44.2% ground ball and hard hit rates against Ross over the last month. He's a pitcher with a history of platoon issues (LHBs .351 wOBA, .365 xwOBA since last season). San Francisco is far from an optimal park for LHBs, but Brandon Belt (162 wRC+, .286 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is so good that he should be considered in this spot. Bumgarner has faced 64 right-handed batters this season. He's struck out just six and allowed six HRs (.381 wOBA). Obviously not this bad when everything's right, the Padres do have a few bats who can mash southpaws, all for well below $4K on either site and in a park that's a bit more fair for RHBs. Jose Pirela (121 wRC+, .180 ISO vs LHP last calendar year), Hunter Renfroe (159 wRC+, .354 ISO) and Christian Villanueva (235 wRC+, .414 xwOBA, .541 ISO) are batters that should be considered. Lineups for this game have not yet been confirmed.

Anibal Sanchez has a great matchup and the lowest exit velocity, but terrible numbers vs Hosmer despite reverse split

"Man, it's tough to get off Anibal Sanchez"...is not something daily fantasy players ever thought they'd say or even think this year, but this is the situation we seem to find tonight. The Padres have just a 3.89 implied run line that's second worst on the board and he hasn't been bad at all in recent starts. He's pitched into the seventh with two runs or less in three of his last four starts (against the Cubs and the Dodgers too). His 83 mph aEV and 20.5% 95+ mph EV are best on the board today (entire day). The most important thing is the Padres (71 wRC+, 21.4 K-BB% on the road, 83 wRC+, 25.8 K% vs RHP) though. Sanchez has thrown seven different pitches at least 20 times this season, so single pitch analysis is not going to help us much in this spot, but it is important to point out that he has a career reverse split (19 points) and that has been the case since last year, where RHBs have a .381 wOBA against him vs a .342 wOBA for LHBs. The numbers are dropped a bit and the gap closes to 15 points by xwOBA, but batters from either side are between .325 and .345 there. The Padres don't have a right-handed batter in the lineup above 91 wRC+ against RHP over the last calendar year except for A.J. Ellis (111 wRC+, .198 ISO) though, and he's hitting eighth. Jose Pirela (91 wRC+, .115 ISO) has some appeal as a cheap leadoff bat. Premium subscribers can see that there are several Padres in the top 20 on today's Stolen Base Ratings. Eric Hosmer does have some interesting personal numbers against Sanchez (both played in the AL Central for several years). In 47 PAs, Hosmer has just one HR, but a .405 wOBA with a .475 xwOBA in the Statcast era (since 2015).

Upper half of the San Diego order has punished LHP

Caleb Smith pitched well against the Padres last time out (7 IP - 1 R - 4 K) and could be an interesting option tonight as well. San Diego has just a 3.53 implied run line, but they do have some bats in the first half of the order that can rake against LHP. Smith has had a reverse platoon in his short career (RHBs .287 wOBA, LHBs .343 wOBA), but xwOBA closes that gap to 25 points (LHBs .324). That makes each of the first four batters in the San Diego order a bit interesting. Jose Pirela (132 wRC+, .193 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Hunter Renfroe (163 wRC+, .363 ISO) both cost less than $4K on either site. Christian Villaneuva (255 wRC+, .435 xwOBA, .571 ISO) has been an MVP candidate against southpaws. Eric Hosmer (100 wRC+, .169 ISO) is competent against same-handed pitching and has a 70.6 Hard% over the last week.

Wei-Yin Chen has pitched well recently, but the San Diego lineup continues a few lefty-mashers

Wei-Yin Chen has looked good in his last two starts (12.2 IP - 8 H - 3 ER - 1 HR - 3 BB - 11 K), which may be enough to make him a worthy candidate at a low cost in San Diego (89 wRC+, 18.5 K-BB% vs LHP). On the other hand though, this San Diego lineup contains some hitters who can mash left-handed pitching. Christian Villanueva (257 wRC+, .443 xwOBA, .561 ISO) and Hunter Renfroe (161 wRC+, .380 ISO, 53.6 FB%) have been two of the top bats in baseball against southpaws over the last calendar year. Jose Pirela (125 wRC+, .189 ISO) costs less than $3.5K on either site. Even Franmil Reyes has a wOBA and xwOBA above .400 against them with two HRs in 14 PAs.

Christian Villanueva has a 261 wRC+, .454 xwOBA and .567 ISO against LHP

Caleb Smith's 31.7 K% is suspect, especially with just a 10.8 SwStr% over the last month. He may be able to sustain it in San Diego today (18.3 K-BB% vs LHP), but it's not an offense without dangerous bats against southpaws (16.3 HR/FB). Christian Villanueva has destroyed LHP in 64 PAs (261 wRC+, .454 xwOBA, .567 ISO, 42.9 Hard%). Fellow lefty masher Hunter Renfroe (175 wRC+, .393 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) has returned to the lineup. Jose Pirela (128 wRC+, .199 ISO) costs less than $3K on either site. Smith has handled RHBs well in his career (.286 wOBA), but Statcast increases that mark by 40 points (.326 xwOBA), giving him virtually no platoon split.

A Fine Value Option

If you are looking for a value play today, Jose Pirela stands out as a solid option for me. His price tag is dirt cheap on every single site, as he is one of the cheapest hitters you will find on the board. He has been hitting in the cleanup spot for the Padres of late, and while that seems odd for a guy who has not hit a single home run this season, I’ll gladly take the RBI opportunities against a mediocre pitcher. It’s nothing sexy, but Pirela is a fine one-off play if you are trying to fit some studs into your lineup, especially on the mound, today.

Kyle Freeland has a career .322 wOBA against RHBs at Coors (61.5 GB%, 0.8 Hard-Soft%)

The San Diego Padres have an implied run line above 4.5 at Coors tonight, but...this is not a pretty spot. In addition to weather concerns, the Padres are down almost an entire middle of the order (Hosmer, Villanueva, Renfroe) against a lefty with some extreme splits. Kyle Freeland doesn't miss a lot of right-handed bats (3.8% at home in his career), but has held RHBs to a .322 wOBA at Coors due to a 61.5 GB% and 0.8 Hard-Soft%. If you believe Franchy Cordero (88 wRC+, .182 ISO, 44.4 Hard% vs LHP) can make contact (LHBs 34.1 K% vs Freeland at Coors), he could be the most interesting choice (LHBs .346 wOBA, 35.6 GB%, 36.7 Hard% vs Freeland at Coors). The Padres still have a few right-handed bats proficient against LHP though: Manuel Margot (106 wRC+, .181 ISO), Wil Myers (109 wRC+, .201 ISO, 52.5 Hard%), and Jose Pirela (141 wRC+, .237 ISO), all in the same range as Cordero on FanDuel, but a bit more expensive on DraftKings.

Despite solid two-game stretch, Derek Holland posted a 5.97 xFIP and a 25.7% Hard-Soft% versus RHB in 2017

Holland is coming off of a relatively impressive start his last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing just two earned runs and punching out eight in six innings of work. Still, there's a reason why Holland could only sneak into the San Francisco Giants starting rotation because of injuries to Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija during spring training. Holland has done a solid job of limiting hard contact through two starts, recording just a 23.1% hard-hit percentage, but he continues to give up an astronomical amount of fly balls, exactly 50.0% of the time thus far. In addition, the San Diego Padres have rolled out a lineup with seven right-handed bats for Saturday's matchup in an effort to take advantage of Holland's abysmal 2017 splits against right-handed hitters, evidenced by a 17.5% strikeout rate, 12.5% walk rate, 43.2% fly ball rate, and a massive 40.8% hard-hit percentage. All in all, those metrics led to a whopping .408 wOBA, 5.97 xFIP, and 2.26 HR/9 versus righties last season. Even though Holland recorded a lower 13.4% strikeout rate to left-handed batters, he was still significantly better against lefties, inducing a 54.1% ground ball rate and 28.6% hard-hit percentage, making the lone-lefty in the Padres order, Cory Spangenberg, a logical fade candidate in all formats, especially as a one-off option. This leaves Hunter Renfroe (0.435 xwOBA, 0.352 ISO vs LHP), Christian Villanueva (0.534 xwOBA, 0.500 ISO vs LHP in 24 PA), and Jose Pirela (39.2% HH%, 0.250 ISO vs LHP) as the primary right-handed power bats to target from this Padres squad on tonight's main slates across the industry.
