Hard Contact Prone Pitcher Offers Value to Cheap Bats

One of the more hitter friendly environments on the board tonight (by both park effects and Weather Edge) is in Washington, where the Braves reside near the top of the board at 4.76 implied runs. The reason is fairly easy. Batters from either side of the plate exceed a .330 wOBA and xwOBA against Joe Ross since 2019 with LHBs having the most success (.373 wOBA). Freddie Freeman (169 wRC+, .300 ISO vs RHP since 2019) and Ozzie Albies (104 wRC+, .194 ISO) both exceed a 120 wRC+ overall over the last 30 days. That part’s easy.

On the opposite end, the Nationals sit in the middle of the board with 4.24 implied runs. Nobody is going to be looking at them against a pitcher who has struck out 32.1% of batters with a 14.6 SwStr% this year. However, 19 of his 34 Ks in just two of his five starts. He’s also allowed five HRs on 10 Barrels (15.2%) with a 91 mph EV. While his 2.96 ERA meets his 2.86 SIERA, a 4.66 xERA is much higher. There some opportunities with cheap Washington bats tonight. Only Trea Turner costs more than $4K on DraftKings or $3K on FanDuel. Ynoa has exhibited a massive reverse split in his short career (RHBs .366 wOBA, LHBs .263). However, Statcast has batters from either side of the plate within a .355 xwOBA. Aside from Turner (123 wRC+, .215 ISO), both Josh Bell (126 wRC+, .262 ISO) and Kyle Schwarber (112 wRC+, .268 ISO) have had success against RHP since 2019. Both exceed a 95 mph EV on fly balls and line drives overall this year. The only other batter in the projected lineup who can say that is Yadiel Hernandez (96.4 mph), who has a 156 wRC+ since being called up.

Way too Cheap on FD and Yahoo

Bell is appropriately priced on DK, but on Fanduel and Yahoo, he is way to cheap. Since the beginning of 2019 Bell owns a .299 ISO and a .395 wOBA against RHP while playing in one of the worst hitters ballparks in the majors. He gets a matchup against DeSclafani who will likely be chalk and has some fairly drastic splits which include a .209 ISO and a 44.3% Hard Hit rate against lefties.

Cheap Stack To Pivot Off The Cheap Chalk

Designated for large-field GPPs only, so beware. Woodruff is a good pitcher, Pittsburgh is a bad team, and PNC Park is quite a harsh hitting environment. So why play the Pirates? Well, if you're going to try to pair two expensive SPs tonight, the most obvious well-projected source of cheap hitting will be in the KC/DET game. While that construction may be okay for single-entry small-field contests, it won't provide much leverage for bigger GPPs. The Pirates 5-man stack comes in under $20k in salary on DraftKings and at sub-5% ownership overall and can be a useful way to utilize expensive pitching while not being stuck with the Royals & Tigers chalk bats in the process. SlateIQ currently has them ranked 12th as the top stack of the night, which is still better than 6 other teams on this slate, so it wouldn't be a complete long shot dart throw tonight.

Sneaky Shootout

The Marlins and Pirates are not the most exciting teams in the league, but there are some bats in this game with strong matchups against attackable pitchers. The standouts here are the Pirates lefties against Elieser Hernandez. Hernandez has been good against righties, but has managed just 18.7% K to lefties with fly balls and hard hits leading to a .336 ISO against. Both Josh Bell and Bryan Reynolds come in with hard hit rates above 45% against righties as well as keeping the platoon edge against the bullpen with their switch-hitting.

Pirates have a team 139 wRC+, 16.6 K% and 21.4 HR/FB over the last seven days

Robert Dugger did not allow an earned run, striking out seven Reds through seven innings in his second major league start. He allowed two HRs, walking four Mets in his first one. The 24 year-old is not considered a high value prospect (40 Future Value, #27 org via Fangraphs) with the slider (55) being projected as his only above average attribute. In 10 starts at AAA, he struck out 19.9% (13 K-BB%) with a 37.5 GB%, 7.59 ERA and 6.05 xFIP. These don’t exactly seem like numbers that merit a promotion and his 91.8 mph aEV through two major league starts doesn’t imply much disagreement. The Pirates are the most contact prone offense on the board (102 wRC+, 18.7 K% vs RHP) and also one of the hottest (139 wRC+, 16.6 K%, 21.4 HR/FB last seven days). Ultra-small sample size alert, but LHBs have a .374 xwOBA against Dugger so far with a 62.5 Hard%. The Pirates (5.14) are one of seven teams above five implied runs with the remaining nine teams below 4.5, which puts them in a very interesting spot tonight. The projected lineup for Pittsburgh includes four LHBs, all above a 105 wRC+ and .150 ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year. Adam Frazier (106 wRC+, .154 ISO) would have more value at the top of the lineup, but Bryan Reynolds (153 wRC+, .201 ISO) and Josh Bell (161 wRC+, .331 ISO) should be a major part of the daily fantasy player lineup pool tonight. Colin Moran (110 wRC+, .184 ISO) has some value here too. While the park in Pittsburgh suppresses RH power, it plays much more neutrally for LHBs.

Pirates currently have highest implied total on the main slate in Coors vs. Melville

The Pirates get the Coors boost this weekend and will be facing off against Tim Melville tonight. Melville had a 5.42 ERA / 5.76 xFIP over 96 AAA innings this year with a 2.24 HR/9. Melville does have a 0.75 ERA over 12 innings this year but with a 5.29 xFIP, .200 BABIP and 100% LOB rate. Melville projects as a 7+ ERA pitcher going forward by two different projection systems (THE BAT and ZiPS) and is someone to continue to target, especially in Coors. Once Melville is chased from the game, Pirates hitters will see at bats versus a Rockies’ bullpen that has a 6th worst 4.75 SIERA over the past 30 days. Josh Bell (.401 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Starling Marte (.382), Bryan Reynolds (.373), Jose Osuna (.336), Adam Frazier (.330), Colin Moran (.326), Kevin Newman (.305) and Jacob Stallings (.295) are all in play tonight for the Pirates. Marte has been their hottest bat with a .394 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks, followed by Josh Bell wit a .379 mark. All Pirates bats are $4.9k+ on Draftkings with the exception of Stallings ($3.4k). On Fanduel, all Pirates bats are under $4k besides Bell, Marte and Newman. The Pirates are currently sitting at a healthy 6.98 implied total.

Pirate lefties could take advantage of Joe Ross's platoon issues (LHBs .383 wOBA last 12 months)

Joe Ross has allowed just a single run over his last 18 innings without a HR, but nine walks to just 11 strikeouts. He’s been stranding runners and suppressing BABIP to gain these results against three well below average offenses vs RHP this year (Diamondbacks, Giants, Reds). His 7.2 K-BB% in 42.2 IP this season, just does not get it done. And his 3.21 ERA since moving back into the rotation over the last 30 days is met with a 5.07 SIERA, though his .326 xwOBA over that span is league average. He has managed contact well this season. In fact, his 86.8 mph aEV is best on the board tonight. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .335 wOBA and xwOBA against Ross since returning from injury last September with LHBs sitting on a .383 wOBA/.370 xwOBA over that span. While the Pirates don’t have a lot of left-handed (or overall) power, tonight’s projected lineup does include a few quality lefties in the upper half of the order. Adam Frazier (105 wRC+, .159 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) should be a great value from the leadoff spot for just $3.5K on DraftKings ($2.8K FanDuel), while Bryan Reynolds (158 wRC+, .210 ISO) and Josh Bell (154 wRC+, .312 ISO) have each hammered RHP. Starling Marte (123 wRC+, .200 ISO) is swinging a hot bat (217 wRC+ last seven days) and should be a worthwhile inclusion from the right side of the plate in any stacks. A 4.61 implied run line actually has the Pirates slightly closer to the bottom of the board than the top, but Ross’s recent results would not appear to be sustainable over a longer run and the line appears to be moving in Pittsburgh’s direction in this game.

Dakota Hudson has worst 30-day SIERA on the board tonight (min. 20 IP)

Dakota Hudson has just a 3.99 ERA this year, but his 5.37 FIP, 4.99 xFIP, 4.98 SIERA, 41 % hard contact rate, 1.58 WHIP and 6.8 K-BB% all scream regression. Hudson does do a good job keeping the ball out of the air (57.6% GB rate, 20.5% FB rate) but even with an elite GB rate, he does not miss enough bats and induce enough soft contact to maintain his current ERA. His .352 xwOBA allowed is further evidence of this. Hudson has been even worse over the past 30 days with a 5.39 SIERA, 5.76 ERA, 2.16 HR/9 and 52.7% hard contact rate. Tonight, Hudson faces the Pirates who project to be very low-owned and could be a nice contrarian stack. Josh Bell (.390 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Starling Marte (.382), Bryan Reynolds (.367), Jose Osuna (.342), Corey Dickerson (.328) and Adam Frazier (.326) are all solid options tonight vs. Hudson. Corey Dickerson has been their hottest hitter with a .436 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Starling Marte (.422). Also in play is Colin Moran, who has slumped of late but has a 106 wRC+ vs. RHP since 2018 and is very cheap across the industry. The Pirates have just a 4.08 implied total which seems pretty low considering they have a respectable 101 wRC+ vs. RHP this year and that Hudson has been more lucky than good in 2019.

Lefty Stack for GPPs

The shine started to wear off for Adam Wainwright in his last start, as he got knocked around for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Reds. Lefties have become a major problem for him over the last few years, and Wainwright has allowed a .364 wOBA and 43% hard contact rate to LHBs so far this season. This isn't a great matchup for him against a LH-heavy Pirates lineup. Josh Bell obviously profiles with the most power, but you could include Frazier, Dickerson, Reynolds, or any other lefty as part of a GPP stack. There's sneaky potential here.
