Juan Soto Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Second Highest Team Run Total Projects Only a Single Top 10 Bat

Zack Wheeler will be starting Game One of the NLCS on six days rest. While San Diego is the more negative run environment in play today, the weather is expected to be extremely hitter friendly with a neutral umpiring assignment (Brian Knight). Wheeler struck out just four of the 22 Cardinals he faced in the Wild Card round with a single walk, a HBP and four hits over 6.2 shutout innings. He then struck out five of 24 Braves, but did allow three runs in less than six innings in Atlanta in the Division Series. Wheeler missed a month near the end of the season, but came back to strike out 15 of his final 52 batters. The discouraging part of that is that his swinging strike rate did not exceed 8.1% in any start since his return and averages at 5.6%. However, his velocity was intact with 63.9% of his contact on the ground and an 85.4 mph EV. Striking out a healthy 26.9% of batters (21.3 K-BB%), he’s the rare Phillies’ pitcher with all estimators above his 2.82 ERA, though they only extend to a 3.19 SIERA. That’s said because the Phillies are the only post-season team with a below average defense. In fact, -31 Runs Prevented is second worst in the majors, though Realmuto remains a top catcher (11.3 CDA is seventh) and they did improve the defense with some trade deadline acquisitions. The Padres had 101 wRC+, 22.0 K% and 9.6 HR/FB vs RHP this year with four of the top five in the projected lineup below an 18 K% vs RHP this year. Wheeler did dominate the Padres on a May 18th start in Philadelphia (7 IP – 4 H – 0 R – 0 BB – 9 K – 24 BF). Wheeler’s two best pitches by Statcast Run Values were both of his fastballs (four-seam and sinker), which make up about 60% of his pitches. The Padres were exactly neutral (0.00 wFB/C) against fastballs in the second half of the season, but did struggle against sliders (-0.19 wSL/C), which was Wheeler’s third best pitch (26.8%, -0.4 RV/100, 24.4 Whiff%, .272 wOBA, .262 xwOBA). The second most expensive pitcher on either site (tied on FanDuel), Wheeler is the second best projected pitcher and value on either site.

A 3.33 implied run line for the Padres is second best on the board, but still more than half a run below the Yankees. Wheeler has very little split with batters from either side of the plate between a .262 and .290 wOBA and xwOBA this year, though despite Manny Machado (158 wRC+, .226 ISO vs RHP this year) smashing RHP nearly as well as Juan Soto (166 wRC+, .249 ISO), the latter is the only San Diego bat projecting among the top 10 today. He is also the only top 10 projecting value among Padres on FanDuel ($3.5K). However, within $300 of $3K each, Josh Bell (121 wRC+, .143 ISO) and Trent Grisham (83 wRC+, .156 ISO) project as top 10 DraftKings values. The latter’s bat has really come alive in the post-season.

Top Projected Bat Against Reverse Split Pitcher

Clayton Kershaw was simply phenomenal when healthy this season. He allowed more than two runs in just four of 22 starts, but did have enough injury concerns to go fewer than six innings in 10 of 22 starts. While a 23.1 K-BB% was his worst mark since 2019, it’s still well above his career average (20.7%) in addition to a fantastic contact profile (47.1 GB%, 87.1 mph EV, 4.2% Barrels/BBE, 33.2% 95+ mph EV). A good defense (8 Runs Prevented, .255 BABIP allowed) were partially responsible for a 2.28 ERA that was below estimators ranging from a 2.51 xERA to a 3.13 DRA, but he also helped them out with a lot of weak contact. The Padres had a 103 wRC+ and 20.4 K% vs LHP this year, only facing Kershaw twice (12 IP – 1 ER – 0 – 1 BB – 11 K – 44 BF), both prior to the break. Kershaw’s three pitch arsenal (slider, four-seam curveball) all graded much better than average via Statcast (Run Value), though the Padres were no worse than middle of the league against any of those pitches in the second half. Kershaw is the most expensive pitcher on either site, but likely mostly due to workload/pitch count, projects as the worst pitcher on the board and obviously as the worst value on either site as well. He certainly has a chance to blow these projections out of the water though. The weather forecast also makes him quite a bit safer than either of the pitchers in Atlanta.

In fact, the Padres (2.92) have the lowest implied run total on the board by more than half a run. Despite the lefty on lefty situation and lowest team run total, Juan Soto (106 wRC+, .144 ISO vs LHP this season) projects as the top bat on the board, as LHBs (.283 wOBA, .281 xwOBA) actually performed superior to RHBs (.238 wOBA, .242 xwOBA) against Kershaw this year. Soto is the only Padres among the top 10 projected bats on either site though. We find several more Padres projected among the top 10 values on either site tonight, including Soto at $3.7K on FanDuel. Wil Myers (130 wRC+, .231 ISO) and Jake Cronenworth (108 wRC+, .155 ISO) also project as top FanDuel values for less than $3K. Myers also projects as the second best DraftKings value ($2.7K) with Trent Grisham (82 wRC+, .161 ISO) projecting as the best DK value for $400 less. The bottom of the lineup has somewhat been carrying the Padres through the post-season thus far and Austin Nola (109 wRC+, .115 ISO) projects as a top DK value for $2.5K too.

Sixty Percent of the Top 10 Projected Bats Come From This Lineup

Way high up on the Friday night mountain, overlooking all the rest of the climbers far below, we find the San Diego Padres at a staggering 6.15 implied run line against Ryan Feltner at Coors. Mostly due to pitcher friendly weather conditions and an abundance of high end pitching, no other offense reaches a five run team total on the main slate. The next closest are the Rockies (4.85) with three more offenses almost exactly at the four and a half run mark and then a quarter run drop to the rest of the board. Filtering LineupHQ by raw point projections serves no surprises. The top 10 projections are 60% Padres. Juan Soto (164 wRC+, .243 ISO vs RHP this year) even merits a projection better than Aaron Judge for the first time all week. Of course, Judge (174 wRC+, .349 ISO) is the second best projected bat on the board against Rich Hill. Feltner’s 12.1 K-BB% isn’t too bad, but still generates estimators no lower than 4.29 SIERA and with a 43.1 Z-O-Swing% plus Coors, he ends up with an ERA above six. He has exhibited a large reverse split so far (RHBs .390 wOBA, .379 xwOBA – LHBs .319 wOBA, .328 xwOBA). Manny Machado (161 wRC+, .232 ISO), Jake Cronenworth (104 wRC+, .147 ISO), Jurickson Profar (107 wRC+, .167 ISO), Josh Bell (122 wRC+, .151 ISO) and Brandon Drury (107 wRC+, .198 ISO) join Soto atop the board. Yordan Alvarez, Mookie Betts and Austin Slater are the remaining top 10 projected bats tonight.

Three Offenses Separate From the Pack

The Houston Astros top a 12 team slate at 5.17 implied runs against Cole Ragans, followed by the Cardinals (4.93) and Padres (4.79) before we get some separation from the rest of the board below four and a half team run totals. The top projected bat on the board is Juan Soto (114 wRC+, .166 ISO vs LHP this year) against the “veteran rookie” Tommy Henry, the most experienced of several rookie pitchers on the main slate with six starts. The 5.0 K-BB% is unimpressive and the 6.1% Barrels/BBE with a below average ground ball rate and 91.1 mph EV won’t sustain. All non-FIP estimators exceed five, while LHBs have a .317 wOBA, but .285 xwOBA against him. With RHBs faring better (.332 wOBA, .363 xwOBA), Manny Machado (127 wRC+, 231 ISO) joins Soto among the top projected bats tonight.

The Houston lineup does feature the most top 10 projected bats (four on FanDuel, three on DraftKings. Cole Ragans has walked more of the 82 batters he’s faced (10) than he’s struck out (9), while allowing four home runs with only one-third of his contact on the ground. A small silver lining is that he’s allowed just five barrels (7.9%) with an 86.2 mph EV, but none of it matters if you’re walking as many as you strike out, which has never previously been a problem in the minors (20+ K-BB% at both AA & AAA this year). RHBs have a .389 wOBA and .358 xwOBA against him, while LHBs are below .215. This is a small sample, so it’s no surprise that Yordan Alvarez (166 wRC+, .260 ISO) and Kyle Tucker (91 wRC+, .176 ISO) are among the group of top projecting bats, along with Jose Altuve (207 wRC+, .358 ISO) and Alex Bregman (109 wRC+, .146 ISO).

The Cardinals are the only other offense to include a pair of top 10 projecting bats tonight in Paul Goldschmidt (163 wRC+, .244 ISO) and Lars Nootbaar (131 wRC+, .243 ISO) against Cory Abbott, who has struck out batters at nearly a league average rate (20.9%), but also walked too many (11.3%) with six home runs on eight barrels (10.5% Barrels/BBE) over 26.2 innings. His 91.7 Z-Contact% and 44.4 Z-O-Swing% are a terrible combination, but we can’t even bother with estimators because they’re all over the place. He does have a rather wide split in limited action (LHBs .376 wOBA, .302 xwOBA – RHBs .269 wOBA, .243 xwOBA).

Neither Coors Offense Projects to Smash the Slate Most Often

While the two Coors teams do currently project to be the most popular stacks on a 13 game board (though projections are fluid and updated throughout the day), neither gets to 10% on a board that includes three more teams above five and a half implied runs. The Smash% column is a really interesting one today because neither Coors offense projects to smash the slate most often in early simulations. In fact, while the Dodgers currently smash the board most often as the only stack with a double digit Smash% on DraftKings, the Padres actually smash slightly more often on FanDuel, where non team reaches a double digit projection. Where we do find a dominant stack on both sites is the Value column, where San Francisco stacks currently project for more than twice the value (FanDuel) or even three times (DraftKings) any other team. Check out today’s PlateIQ Live Blog to find out which stack, not mentioned above, currently projects to be a top rated one.

Top Projected Offense Could See a Lot of Struggling Pen

We may have enough 2022 information at this point to start considering bullpens. You generally don’t want to use full season numbers anyway because there’s so much turnover throughout the season. A bit less than two weeks is still a fairly small sample, but may be worth looking at. The Arizona bullpen has the worst xFIP (5.28) and SIERA (4.84) in the league thus far and in game two of a doubleheader, starting Tyler Gilbert, there’s a good chance we see a lot of it this afternoon in a game that is only present on the DraftKings main slate. We know the Washington offense is lacking, but Juan Soto does not suffer a large platoon split. He, Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell all exceed a .360 wOBA and .185 ISO vs LHP since last season. The Nationals currently have the fifth highest implied run line on the slate (4.67).

The Texas Rangers come in with an equal bullpen 5.66 ERA and FIP that are worst in the majors. Seattle is not a hitter friendly park, but we may see a lot of this bullpen after Jon Gray faced just 16 batters in his first start due to a blister issue and is now making only his second start after an IL stint. On the other side, Robbie Ray has looked like the old Robbie Ray for the Mariners and that’s not good, but if you’re considering attacking him tonight, realize that Seattle has owned a top five bullpen by ERA and every estimator so far. Other top bullpens include the Dodgers and (checks twice, three times) the Orioles. Cincinnati is another bullpen that has struggled and could see a lot of action behind the rookie starter Reiver Sanmartin.

Cheap Bats Surrounding Superstar

To look at this Washington lineup, one has to wonder about Juan Soto’s sanity for the next couple of years as they rebuild. However, from a daily fantasy standpoint, this can play to our advantage because while Soto (157 wRC+, .178 ISO vs RHP) is going to be expensive, the rest of the lineup is going to come really cheap, giving you a top bat with plenty of room to spare with a stack in the right situation. Tonight might be one of those situations as Chase Anderson makes his return to the Philadelphia rotation (maybe not the Anderson the Phillies thought they’d have pitching in this spot a week ago). He recently returned to the team in a bullpen role after being booted from the rotation in mid-May. A 7.6 K-BB% is responsible for his downfall and while he’s only stranded 61.5% of runners, all estimators are above five. Anderson has carried a reverse split at times during his career, but it’s a 149 point difference this year. However, Statcast closes the gap to nine points between a .340 and .350 xwOBA. In a positive environment in Washington, nearly everybody is in play here as the projected lineup for the Nats includes four batters at or below $2.5K on either site. Yadiel Hernandez (114 wRC+ vs RHP, 248 wRC+ last 30 days) may be the bargain with the most upside here, but Carter Kieboom (128 wRC+ vs RHP) is finally showing some signs of life with the bat too. The Nationals have a fairly healthy 4.75 implied run line and while the Philadelphia bullpen brought in some deadline reinforcement, it’s still a below average pen that’s been worked hard in this series.

Large Platoon Split Keeps This Pitcher From Being More

Anthony DeSclafani is essentially a league average pitcher and one thing that keeps him from being more is a substantial platoon split. With LHBs owning a wOBA and xwOBA above .350 against him and RHBs below .290, this is a spot where we can justify exposure to both sides of this matchup with DeSclafani costing just $6.3K on DraftKIngs. Juan Soto (168 wRC+, .212 ISO vs RHP since 2020) might be the top overall bat on the board tonight. He’s starting to heat up and has a 151 wRC+ over the last 30 days overall. The Nationals don’t have another LHB above a 100 wRC+ projected in their lineup tonight. In fact, Trea Turner (125 wRC+, .188 ISO) has been the only other above average hitter at all, but Kyle Schwarber (94 wRC+, .227 ISO) does have power and has seen the leadoff spots against RHP a few times recently. The Nationals find themselves at the middle of the board with 4.27 implied runs tonight and there are some weather concerns for this game, so keep an eye on Kevin’s updated forecast later this afternoon.

Perhaps the Top Offensive Spot on the Board

If there are just three teams above an implied run line on a slate without Coors, you might expect the Yankees and Red Sox to own two of those spots if they’re on the slate. Washington (5.33) might be the surprise. After all, they have just a 93 wRC+ vs RHP and Jeff Hoffman is off his best start since his first one, striking out seven Brewers. However, he walked four in that start and has walked 15 of his last 93. Although his FIP perfectly matches his ERA (4.31), all other estimators are quite a bit higher with four of 23 runs unearned and a 90.7 mph EV with just a 36.6% of his contact on the ground. Considering the positive run environment along with a potential weather boost, according to Weather Edge, Washington bats might be in the top spot on the board. Batters from either side of the plate exceed a .340 wOBA and xwOBA against Hoffman since last season. Juan Soto (167 wRC+. .213 ISO vs RHP since 2020) might be the top overall bat on the board, but just about anyone they place in the lineup is viable here. Should Hoffman see an early exit, a Cincinnati bullpen with a 5.40 ERA and 4.49 FIP over the last 30 days should pose no significant problems either. The one thing to watch here, as with most outdoor games on tonight’s slate, is that there could be some weather issues in this game. Be sure to catch Kevin’s updated forecast later this afternoon.

A Pitcher DFS Players Normally Don't Attack

Jack Flaherty is not generally a pitcher daily fantasy players like to target with bats, but circumstances dictate that this might be a good idea tonight. To start, Washington is likely the most positive run environment on the slate tonight. In fact, it’s possibly the only one outside of Philly. Next, LHBs have a .277 wOBA against Flaherty since 2019, which isn’t great, but Statcast improves that to a .305 xwOBA, which is almost league average. Flaherty has also had some control issues, without a walk rate below 9% outside of his 7.1 BB% in 2019. Of his 39 batted balls this year, five have been Barrels (12.8%) and only 12 have been on the ground (31.6%). Exit velocity is up on the whole this year, but he’s averaging 92.7 mph currently. Since 2020 started, his overall Zone% has dropped, as has the Swing% against him, while Z-Contact% has gone up. Next, you can add in the worst defense not only on the slate, but in the league via Statcast’s Runs Prevented (-6) this year.

The Washington lineup is a true stars and scrubs presentation. Among projected starters, four are bove a 115 wRC+ and .200 ISO vs RHP since 2019 and the other four no higher than 80 and .151. The three LHBs projected to be in the Washington lineup are all among the strong performers against RHP, along with Trea Turner, and expected to comprise the top half of the order. We want Kyle Schwarber, Josh Bell and particularly Juan Soto (164 wRC+, .289 ISO vs RHP since 2019) in this spot. At four implied runs, the Nationals sit amid the middle of the board tonight, which should prevent ownership from being too much of an issue on a six game slate. On the opposite side, LHBs project well against Joe Ross too (.368 wOBA, .361 xwOBA since 2019). The Cardinals are more balanced than in the past with four LHBs projected, none above a 100 wRC+ or .182 ISO vs RHP since 2019 however. Dylan Carlson does have a 137 wRC+ overall this year though. These two teams also both have bottom 10 bullpens this year, each with a 4.86 xFIP without a single estimator below four.
