Justin Smoak Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Wrigley Wind

Seasoned DFS'ers know that as soon as you see warm temps and wind blowing out in Wrigley you stack the game every possible way. I am *hoping* that this being the first Wrigley Wind game of the season combined with it being Sunday that we see somewhat reduced ownership on this game but it's highly doubtful. Per Kevn Roth's WeatherEdge tool, in 23 prior games at Wrigley with similar conditions as today, HR's increased by 73.6%, Total Runs by 32.3%, and ERA by 25.9%. Per Kevn Roth's WeatherEdge tool, in 23 prior games at Wrigley with similar conditions as today, HR's increased by 73.6%, Total Runs by 32.3%, and ERA by 25.9%.

Felix Hernandez returns from long IL stint to face surging Toronto offense

Felix Hernandez has not appeared in an MLB game since May 11th, when he was shelled for 7 earned runs in 2 and 1/3 innings and soon after placed on the IL with a lat problem. Before that, Felix had displayed an improved walk rate (4.6% BB rate, down from 8.6% in 2018) but he also held a 6.52 ERA, 2.09 HR/9 and a 45.3% hard contact rate. Per Statcast, he’s also allowed a .344 xwOBA and league-worst 91.7 MPH aEV. In a steady decline for a few years now and likely shaking off rust from being on the IL for months, Blue Jays bats seem to be in a great spot vs. Felix tonight, especially given that they have a 5th best 113 wRC+ over the past 30 days. Justin Smoak (.407 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Vlad Guerrero Jr. (.353), Cavan Biggio (.340), Bo Bichette (.331), Rowdy Tellez (.321), Reese McGuire (.306) and Randall Grichuk (.292) are all potential options vs. the Mariners tonight. Teoscar Hernandez has been the Blue Jays’ hottest hitter with a .425 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks and is another option. Blue Jays hitters are very affordable as only Bo Bichette ($4.7k) and Vlad Guerrero Jr. ($4.2k) will cost over $4k on Draftkings , while just Bichette, Biggio and Guerrero Jr. are above $3k on Fanduel.

Felix Hernandez is Back in Our Lives

Welcome back, Felix Hernandez! Over the past two seasons, he's sporting a monstrous .269 ISO and 41.8% HH with only 19.7% Ks to lefties. Cavan Biggio at $3600 on DraftKings at a scare 2B position is a solid cheap option. The Jays are projected to have 6 lefties in the order, so I consider them all to be in play tonight for 5-man stacks in large-field GPPs. Felix is not all that much better to righties, so don't forget out Randal Grichuk at under $4k and although he's priced up, Bo Bichette is likely to be quite lower owned to due his $4700 salary.

Core Value at First Base

I’d probably stack the Marlins against Jordan Zimmermann at this point. He has been one of the worst pitchers in all of baseball this season, with an ERA north of 7.00 and a meager 14% strikeout rate. He simply isn’t fooling anyone. The problem lies in the fact that the Toronto offense isn’t exactly the most consistent, stable force in the league. Fire up any and all Toronto bats tonight. Despite an underwhelming overall year, Justin Smoak has quietly amassed a .366 wOBA and .270 ISO against RHP, and he is definitely a viable option at his affordable price tag on every DFS site.

Lots of value and upside in Toronto lineup vs. Wojciechowski

Asher Wojciechowski only has 5 innings pitched this year, but over 84 innings pitched in the Majors he’s allowed a 6.64 ERA, 4.87 xFIP and 4.25 SIERA with a 15.2% K-BB and 1.82 HR/9 thanks in part to a 50% FB rate. Projection systems have him pegged as a 6+ ERA pitcher going forward. Not usually a high-powered offense, the Blue Jays have a whopping 6.14 implied total for this great matchup at home in the Rogers Centre. Justin Smoak (.428 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Cavan Biggio (.378), Lourdes Gurriel (.346), Vlad Guerrero Jr. (.339), Eric Sogard (.321), Danny Jansen (.320), and Brandon Drury (.317) are all solid options in their projected lineup. With the exception of Gurriel ($5.5k on Draftkings) all Toronto bats will be priced at $4.7k or less on DK. Vlad Guerrero Jr. is just $3.8k and is projected to bat 2nd, Biggio is $4.7k projected to hit 4th, Jansen is just $3.8k projected 5th, Smoak is $4.1k projected 6th and Drury is $3.4k projected 7th. Jansen has been their hottest hitter with a scorching .486 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Gurriel with a .402 xwOBA. There are some great cash plays in this lineup and some GPP appeal as well.

Two hottest offenses on the board (Red Sox, Blue Jays) will be facing full bullpen efforts

A combination of Derek Law & Thomas Pannone will face the Red Sox tonight. The latter has exceeded 40 pitches just twice since 5/4. With Hector Velazquez having exceeded 50 pitches just once since April, it now looks like the two hottest teams on the board (Blue Jays 157 wRC+, 7.8 K-BB%, 23.9 Hard-Soft% over the last week – Red Sox 163 wRC+, 17.6 K-BB%, 23.3 Hard-Soft%) will face full on bullpen efforts. Both teams were already projected above five runs, but the Boston run line is likely to increase as after Stroman’s scratch. Boston bats may now have a small advantage of being priced for Stroman rather than the Toronto bullpen. Mookie Betts (154 wRC+, .228 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) was already a strong value at $4.5K on DraftKings. J.D. Martinez (138 wRC+, .227 ISO) comes in at around the same price on either site. On the Toronto side, Vlad Jr. is out tonight, but Justin Smoak (149 wRC+, .283 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is a strong value on either site at a low price in the middle of the lineup. Cavan Biggio (144 wRC+, .328 ISO) has been crushing RHP since being called up.

Power Up North

There should be some fireworks in Canada for the 4th of July with the Red Sox travelling up north to play the Blue Jays. While the Red Sox are the first place to look, the Blue Jays left-handed power gives us some useful salary savings. We should see 3-4 innings from Hector Velazquez who has allowed a .250 ISO to lefties this season, followed by a mostly right-handed Boston bullpen. My first choice would be Cavan Biggio, but we can get cheaper at first base with the duo of Justin Smoak and Rowdy Tellez. Smoak has a .281 ISO on 46% fly balls and 50% hard hits with Tellez at a .213 ISO, 40% fly balls and 42% hard hits.

Sneaky GPP Stack?

The Blue Jays have disappointed offensively all year long, but this could be a spot to buy in on a GPP stack. A few of their younger hitters (Biggio and Gurriel) have been breaking out of late, and you can also get guys like Guerrero and Smoak at reasonable price tags. Mix and match those combinations to get an affordable GPP stack, and the Jays have a sneaky high implied team total against Velasquez tonight. He's nowhere near a pitcher we need to fear at this point, and I like this spot for Toronto. Anyone in the top six in the order makes sense here.

Gabriel Ynoa (17.6 HR/FB) faces Jays with wind blowing out in Baltimore

Gabriel Ynoa has 10 Ks to six walks with three HRs over his three starts (15 IP). On the season, including relief appearances, he has a 17.6 HR/FB with a 50.5 GB% and contact allowed slightly worse than average (89.3 mph aEV, 7.7% Barrels/BBE). None of this is too bad with a .323 xwOBA and 4.48 SIERA that really aren’t too much worse than league average. One might even say he’s in a strong spot tonight, considering Toronto’s 76 wRC+ and 25.2 K% vs RHP this year. However, conditions are lining up to make this a potentially superior offensive spot tonight. The wind is blowing out to center in this game, which may mean a HR boost, if not necessarily a significant run boost and giving away a premium subscription secret, there’s an extremely hitter friendly umpire behind the plate in this one. Ynoa has faced 72 batters from either side of the plate this year with RHBs having the higher .392 wOBA and .212 ISO against him. Not a large sample, but enough to make Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (117 wRC+, 193 ISO vs RHP), Lourdes Gurriel (105 wRC+, .181 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and either Justin Smoak (149 wRC+, .275 ISO) or Rowdy Tellez (111 wRC+, .245 ISO) at first base bats of interest tonight for a Toronto lineup that’s just outside the top five at 4.75 implied runs.

David Hess's 91 mph aEV and 14% Barrels/BBE are both bottom 5% of the league

The Blue Jays have elected to place an opener in front of Edwin Jackson, but the Orioles are still inclined to get the beating right out of the way, sending David Hess out to start tonight. It’s been 10 starts since Hess last left a game where the opponents had fewer than three runs on the board and he’s allowed 20 HRs over those 10 starts. His 21.1 HR/FB is more than double his 9.9 K-BB%. His 45.6 Z-O-Swing% is second worst on the board tonight. A 7.08 ERA is not too far above a 6.90 FIP and even below his 8.93 DRA. His .394 xwOBA (91 mph aEV and 14% Barrels/BBE are both bottom 5% of the league) is exceeded only by Jackson and Mitch Keller, both above .400. Hess has been pummeled by batters from either side of the plate for at least a .340 wOBA and xwOBA with a fly ball rate below 40% over the last 12 months, giving us a lot to like in an affordable Toronto lineup tied with the Orioles at 5.25 runs, second most on the board. Cavan Biggio (73 wRC+, .120 ISO vs RHP) leads off. His numbers don’t look strong, but 62.5% of his contact against RHP has been hit hard. Justin Smoak (148 wRC+, .274 ISO), Rowdy Telles (109 wRC+, .234 ISO), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (110 wRC+, .192 ISO), Randal Grichuk (100 wRC+, .236 ISO), and Lourdes Gurriel (103 wRC+, 185 ISO) have all been formidable against RHP over the last calendar year.
