Kurt Suzuki Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Nationals hammer LHP (109 wRC+) and are the hottest team on the board (160 wRC+ last seven days)
This is not a bad spot for lefty starter Steven Brault in terms of environment or conditions (Pittsburgh is generally a negative run environment that suppresses RH power). However, he brings the second highest walk rate on the slate (11%) with a .356 xwOBA at home since last year to face a team that not only hammers southpaws (109 wRC+, 21.1 K%, 15.5 HR/FB), but is also the hottest offense in the land (160 wRC+, 3.2 K-BB%, 18.7 HR/FB last seven days). The Nationals are the lowest of seven teams above five implied runs (5.07) on a nine game slate. Anthony Rendon (150 wRC+, .307 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) is obviously the primary batter you want against Brault (RHBs .340 wOBA, .337 xwOBA last calendar year). However, both Howie Kendrick (130 wRC+, .200 ISO) and Kurt Suzuki (166 wRC+, .271 ISO) are less than $3K on FanDuel. Every player in the Washington projected lineup exceeds a 100 wRC+ vs LHP over the last 12 months, while each of the batters with more than 10 PAs over the last week have at least a 130 wRC+ over that span.
Daniel Norris has the highest aEV on the board (90.7 mph) & faces an offense that pounds LHP (17.3 HR/FB)
Daniel Norris went seven innings, striking out a season high eight Indians last time out, but still allowed six runs. The lone bright spot in his season is a 5.5 BB%. He has a below average strikeout rate 19% with a 90 Z-Contact%. His 4.69 ERA is justified by a 4.53 SIERA and even seen as optimistic by a 5.64 DRA and .340 xwOBA. He’s allowed far too much hard contact, as his 90.7 mph aEV is worst on the board (42.9% 95+ mph EV is second worst) and he faces an offense that has been very proficient against LHP this year (118 wRC+, 17.3 HR/FB), who gain a DH today. Weather effects are particularly interesting in Detroit tonight and possibly not very favorable for Norris. Weather Edge (premium subscription required) currently shows some potentially power suppressing winds, but those appear to be blowing in from right field (less of a help to Norris, who will likely be facing predominantly RHBs), while the overall hot temperatures may lead to a run scoring boost overall. This could change throughout the afternoon, so premium subscribers will want to re-check conditions before game time. For now, Washington has a 5.73 implied run line that’s tied for the best mark outside Coors tonight. RHBs have a .332 wOBA (.347 xwOBA) with 40% ground ball and hard hit rates against Norris over the last calendar year (LHBs are even better). Anthony Rendon (149 wRC+, .315 ISO), Howie Kendrick (172 wRC+, .254 ISO) and Victor Robles (143 wRC+, .247 ISO) have all hit southpaws very well over the last calendar year. Trea Turner (131 wRC+, .156 ISO) with less power. Kurt Suzuki (125 wRC+, .208 ISO) or Yan Gomes (106 wRC+, .163 ISO) would have some value behind the plate. Both are below $3K on FanDuel, but the latter is just $2.9K on DraftKings as well.
Three above average hitters behind the plate
Catcher was probably the most difficult DFS position this season and today is no different. While no catcher projects very strongly tonight, both Kurt Suzuki (120 wRC+, .216 ISO) and Gary Sanchez (136 wRC+, .289 ISO) were well above average hitters against LHP this year. Yasmani Grandal (131 wRC+, .240 ISO vs RHP) is the most expensive option on the balll. Of course, players could always choose to punt this position and may not be losing all that much, but if looking for some offense out of the position, these would seem the three best options. None are expected to own top half of the lineup spots.
Peripherals suggest ERA regression
Austin Gomber was punished in his last start against the Dodgers (7 ER, 3 IP). That was a quality offense, but he still has an ERA a run below his non-FIP estimators, due to a 4.3 HR/FB that’s due for at least some regression, while his .358 xwOBA is 37 points above his actual mark so far. In fact, he’s at least 35 points higher by xwOBA than wOBA against batters from either side of the plate. The Braves boast a lineup where each of the first six batters are above a 115 wRC+ vs LHP this year with only Nick Markakis (117 wRC+, .144 ISO) below a .200 ISO. At the very least, a top of the lineup that includes Ronald Acuna (159 wRC+, .283 ISO), Ozzie Albies (143 wRC+, .208 ISO) and Freddie Freeman (148 wRC+, .230 ISO) are all strong plays with an implied run line of 4.59 that’s good for seventh best on the board tonight. Kurt Suzuki (117 wRC+, .220 ISO) is $2.5K on FanDuel.
Smoke and Mirrors
Trevor Richards has put together a string of five 17+ DK pt starts but outside of his first game against Philadelphia he did a terrible job of generating soft contact during that span. In the other four games, Richards gave up a hard-hit rate of 41.5% and allowed a ton of flyballs (46.2%). Richards strong recent fantasy performance combined with a large 14-game slate should lead to fairly low Braves ownership outside of Freeman and Acuna. They should be a "sneaky" stack despite a team implied run total of 5+ runs.
a Cheap Platoon Guy
Really, I shouldn't have to say anything about Suzuki. Saying any player is playing Wade Miley should be enough to convince you. Since the beginning of this year, Mily owns an over 5 xFIP, one of the highest hard hit rates in the league (46.6%), a high walk rate (12.5%) and a tiny K rate (15.3%). Nothing about this says that he's any good at all or should even be in the majors. Suzuki on the other hand has absolutly mashed lefties. Since the beginning of last year, Suzuki owns a .311 ISO and .404 wOBA which are ridiculous numbers considering his cheap price tag and scarce position of catcher. Don't overthink this and just lock in Suzuki. He's the best play on the board today,
A 1.9 K-BB% over seven starts
Gio Gonzalez had his best start by peripherals in a while last time out (5 K, 2 BB). He still allowed six runs to the Reds in 3.2 innings. Over his last seven starts, he has an ERA above six with estimators above five to go along with a 1.9 K-BB%. This is the crux of his problem. Over that span, he has a 49 GB%, 13.8 HR/FB and IFFB% with a 28.2 Hard%. The contact has been pretty standard stuff, but those awful peripherals. The Braves (4.4 implied runs) do have some LHBs who are fairly proficient against LHP in the top half of the order, but Gio has shut down same-handed batters since last season (.231 wOBA, 23.4 Hard%). The production is more league average against RHBs (.316 wOBA) in a park that favors right-handed offense a bit more too. Ronald Acuna (133 wRC+, .225 ISO vs LHP) and Ozzie Albies (129 wRC+, .198 ISO) are expensive bats, but still both worth looking at in this spot. Kurt Suzuki (138 wRC+, .241 ISO) is much cheaper at a more difficult position, but has failed to reach base in any of his 13 PAs over the last week (27.3 Hard%).
J.A. Happ has struggled to miss bats over the last month, has tough assignment this afternoon
J.A. Happ is either the second or third most expensive pitcher on the board this afternoon, but the Braves (119 wRC+, 19.1 K%, 15.4 HR/FB) are a tough assignment and at 3.94 implied runs are more middle than bottom of the board. To make matters more difficult, Happ's strikeout rate is down to 23.3% over the last month with just a 7.5 SwStr%, while his xwOBA has actually improved (.299 for the season, .261 last 30 days). The upside just may not be there for this pricey arm today. On the other side, Happ has held LHBs to a wOBA and xwOBA at .250 or less, which makes it a rare instance where Freddie Freeman (153 wRC+, .259 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) may not be a good play. He's been a bit better than average against RHBs as well (wOBA and xwOBA within three points of .305). The Braves have a couple of RHBs that hit RHP extremely well in Ozzie Albies (136 wRC+, .234 ISO) and Kurt Suzuki (182 wRC+, .348 ISO).
How many left-mashing Catchers can the Braves fit in the lineup in an AL park?
The Braves have found a way to smuggle both of their lefty-mashing Catchers into the lineup by adding the DH tonight. Unfortunately, you can only play both Kurt Suzuki (180 wRC+, .402 xwOBA, .345 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Tyler Flowers (197 wRC+, ,473 xwOBA, .229 ISO) on FanDuel. On DraftKings, you'll have to pick one or the other. RHBs are within six points of a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Jaime Garcia since last season. Ozzie Albies (141 wRC+, .239 ISO) is a top second base play. Freddie Freeman hits same-handed pitching extremely well (157 wRC+, .263 ISO) and has a 214 wRC+ (61.5 Hard%) over the last week. Unfortunately, Johan Camargo (144 wRC+, .368 xwOBA, .270 ISO) bats ninth.
A Lefty Masher at a Tough Position
Suzuki is an auto play for me everytime he goes up against a lefty. Since the beginning of 2017, no braves player has a higher ISO (.340) or a higher wOBA (.431) vs. LHP. Suzuki is outperforming both Freeman and Albies in both categories. He gets a matchup against Stram who owns a horrible 5.23 xFIP and 13.8% BB rate on the year. Guys are going to be on base for him the entire game leaving a whole lot of chances for RBI's and at his price tag of 3.4k at the catcher position he's a great value. Play him in both tournaments and cash.
