Malcolm Brown 2021 Fantasy Outlook

Per RotoGrinders NFL player projections, Malcolm Brown is expected to be the fantasy RB55. He's being drafted on Underdog Fantasy as RB61 at pick 215, compared to his RotoGrinders ranking of 187 as of July. We currently expect 409 yards rushing during the first 17 weeks (Rank 46) with a 23% share of team carries. We also expect a 1% target share which amounts to a projection of 9 targets (Rank 78) and 49 receiving yards (Rank 79).

Many people would be surprised to learn the kind of role Brown had with the Rams passing attack last season, mostly because he never converted it into fantasy production. He racked up just 162 yards and 5 drops (#6 overall among backs) despite 261 routes run and 33 snaps lined up in a slot position. Our projections paint a picture of Brown being used more like he was in his earlier Rams years, and with fewer snaps in the critical passing situations than he saw last season. This should lead to Gaskin maintaining a steady target share, and Brown being relegated to traditional backup level numbers. Unless the Dolphins tip their hand that he'll be used more heavily than this and/or gets usage as the red zone/short yardage back he will be a weak play every fantasy format.

Cam Akers officially active today

Cam Akers is officially active today, as was reported earlier. While it isn't known exactly how healthy Akers is, him being active should be considered a potential negative for Malcolm Brown. The Rams are starting John Wolford at QB today, so they might try to lean on the run if possible.

Brown left the team for the birth of his child. He is expected back in time to play Monday, but there is a chance he won't return in time.

Malcolm Brown (Ankle) Ruled Out for Sunday

Brown has been ruled out for Sunday, meaning Darrell Henderson will fill the RB2 role for the Rams this weekend in London. He has gotten 17 rushes attempts over the past two weeks, totaling 70 yards and 0 TD's.

Malcolm Brown (Ankle) Doubtful Sunday

Brown is doubtful for Sunday, which would make Darrell Henderson the backup running back for the Rams. Given the limited workload for Todd Gurley this season, the RB2 role for the Rams does have some potential upside. Henderson had 6 carries for 39 yards and 1 catch for 9 yards last week.

Rams RB Todd Gurley (Quad) is Out Sunday Vs. San Francisco

Gurley was trending toward not playing since Thursday, and now he has been officially ruled out. Malcolm Brown likely draws the start, while rookie Darrell Henderson and John Kelly should see some snaps in the backfield as well.

Brown is priced close to the minimum across the industry, making him a cash game lock and probably the highest-owned tournament player of the main slate (unless David Johnson ends up getting ruled out for the Cardinals, which would make Chase Edmonds a lock-and-load play at running back as well). Brown's cheap price tag provides incredible salary relief that will probably increase the ownership of expensive studs such as Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Ezekiel Elliot, Dalvin Cook, Julio Jones, DeAndre Hopkins, Michael Thomas, Cooper Kupp, and Travis Kelce.

The matchup isn't great - the 49ers rank 5th in DVOA against the run - but the volume Brown is projected to see is too good to fade. The Rams are also home favorites with a 26.75 implied total in an important divisional game that could end up deciding the winner of the NFC West. Although the Rams traded up to select Henderson in the third round in the 2019 NFL draft, he has only seen the field for one carry so far this season. Remember, the Rams matched an offer sheet to retain Brown this offseason, which shows they trust him to carry the load.

Gurley is doubtful for Sunday with a quad injury. If he can't go, Malcolm Brown will be the top RB with Darrell Henderson as the RB2.
