Matt Wisler Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Lineup update: Matt Wisler will open for the Rays on Thursday.
Lineup update: Matt Wisler will open for the Rays on Thursday.
Matt Wisler will start for the Braves on Friday, not Sean Newcomb
Matt Wisler will start for the Braves on Friday, not Sean Newcomb. This really doesn't mean much in terms of pitching options tonight because Kevin has the same concerns that got this game cancelled last night. What it may do is open up Justin Bour (153 wRC+, .286 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) as a strong, cheap first base option on DraftKings ($3.6K) against a pitcher who has surrendered a .376 career wOBA to RHBs.
Left-handed batters have a career .378 wOBA against Matt Wisler
The Braves have finally confirmed Matt Wisler as tonight's starter. He has had two fantastic starts in AAA (12 IP - 3 ER - 1 HR - 1 BB - 11 K - 43 BF), but has been torched by left-handed batters in his major league career (.378 wOBA, 0.5 K-BB%). The strikeouts and walks are enough for a 70 point wOBA disparity in his splits with the batted ball distribution being fairly even with a ground ball rate and hard hit rate in the mid-30% range to batters from either side of the plate. Michael Conforto (161 wRC+, .282 ISO vs RHP since 2017) and Jay Bruce (125 wRC+, .262 ISO) are the standard plays. The latter costing less than $3K on FanDuel, but owning a scary -32 wRC+ (18.2 Hard%) over the last week, and potentially still dealing with a foot issue that sidelined him two games last week. Yoenis Cespedes (132 wRC+, .226 ISO) and Todd Frazier (111 wRC+, 180 ISO) are certainly playable as part of stacks. The newest Met has a lineup leading 270 wRC+ and 54.6 Hard% over the last week. The Mets have a 4.57 implied run line that's third best on the slate tonight.
Matt Wisler confirmed as Atlanta Braves starter Thursday
The Atlanta Braves officially recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Wisler from their Triple-A affiliate, Gwinnett Braves, and have confirmed that he will start Thursday's game against the New York Mets, taking the place of the injured Anibal Sanchez in the rotation. Lucas Sims was originally listed as the probable starting pitcher for tonight's matchup, but this pitching change does very little to alter the pitching outlook of the main slate or projections of the Mets hitters, as Sims and Wisler are both right-handed and possess similar overall skillsets. Additionally, to make room on the active roster, Atlanta also announced that outfielder Lane Adams has been designated for assignment.
Tigers lose DH to end season in Atlanta, RHBs 35.9 career Hard% against Wisler
RHBs have just a .291 wOBA against Matt Wisler, partially due to a big park and strong defense, but also potentially some luck. He's certainly in a tough spot facing eight of them against the Tigers tonight, who hit RHP well (107 wRC+) and have been the hottest offense in the league (175 wRC+, 20.0 HR/FB over the last week). Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez each have a wRC+ a bit above 150 with an ISO within five points of .250 vs RHP this season. Cabrera, Justin Upton (103 wRC+, .214 ISO vs RHP this season) and Ian Kinsler (117 wRC+, .185 ISO vs RHP this season) all have at least a 249 wRC+ oover the last week. Nick Castellanos has done good work against RHP this season too (142 wRC+, .218 ISO) and costs just $2.4K on FanDuel.
Gordon OUT, Dietrich leads off against Matt Wisler
After striking out a season high 10 Padres three starts back, Matt Wisler has struck out just four of 44 batters in two starts since. A 37.6% hard contact rate to go with his 10.1 K-BB% has really derailed his season. His splits are interesting. LHBs have a .370 wOBA and 31.1 Hard% against him in his career. RHBs have just a .294 wOBA, but with a 36.1 Hard%. Derek Dietrich (134 wRC+, .186 ISO vs RHP since 2015) is a great value out of the leadoff spot tonight for $3.4K on DK and $600 less on FanDuel. He's also the only batter in the lineup with a HR off of Wisler. Justin Bour (124 wRC+, .244 ISO vs RHP since 2015) has similar numbers at a similar cost, but much further down the order and in a park that suppresses power. Yelich (144 wRC+, .219 ISO vs RHP this season) and Stanton (124 wRC+, .266 ISO vs RHP since 2015) are both viable bats, but much more expensive.
Matt Wisler has a 5.33 xFIP and 4.9% K-BB% versus LHB this season
Matt Wisler is a fly ball pitcher (41.1%) who has been especially vulnerable to left-handed power, though right-handed batters are able to get to him at times as well. Our main interest lies in Christian Yelich (146 wRC+, .390 wOBA, .214 ISO vs RHP) who isn’t exactly a renowned power hitter, but excels against fly ball pitchers in general. Justin Bour (135 wRC+, .373 wOBA, .269 ISO vs RHP) and Marcell Ozuna (.161 ISO vs RHP) are next on the list, though we shouldn't necessarily go out of our way to target them outside of a Marlins stack in tournaments. On FanDuel, Dee Gordon remains too cheap at $2.1K and is basically a free square in cash games at that price point.
Padres LHB find themselves in a great spot against the 4.9% K-BB% of Matt Wisler
Matt Wisler has a considerably lower strikeout rate against left-handed batters at just 14.6% and he has also exhibited no ability to limit hard contact (37.4%). Ryan Schimpf is the only individual batter we have much interest in as a one off with his .377 ISO against right-handed pitching, though we could certainly make a case for a mini-stackof Padres lefties, adding in Travis Jankowski (121 wRC+, .350 wOBA vs RHP), Yangervis Solarte (116 wRC+, .342 wOBA, .198 ISO vs RHP) or Alex Dickerson (.224 ISO vs RHP). It would also be viable in tournaments to consider Wil Myers against the fly ball lean of Wisler against right-handed batters (46.5%).
Matt Wisler set to make his first start in nearly a month, has posted a 5.0% K-BB% to LHB
Matt Wisler has returned to the Braves starting rotation in time for a start against the Diamondbacks, and he is far more talented than his low price tag would indicate. His pitching profile, however, does not reflect that yet as he has had problems putting everything together at the major league level and got demoted after an awful stretch earlier in the season. His 4.68 SIERA and 38.1% hard hit rate are entirely unimpressive, though he has done better against left-handed bats this year than in the past. It's tough to gauge exactly how owned the Diamondbacks offense will be in tournaments with all the other offenses in prime spots. It’s probably a little too risky to roll with Wisler as a pitching option, but we should probably avoid both sides of this matchup. There’s no need to force the Arizona bats, but Jake Lamb, Paul Goldschmidt and Jean Segura would be the batters to target if going in that direction.
Matt Wisler has a 12.3 SwStr% last 30 days, but has allowed six HRs over his last three starts
Matt Wisler has impressed with his SwStr rate over the last month (12.3%), though it has only translated to a 21.3 K% and he has allowed a ton of hard contact this season (37.3%) with six HRs over his last three starts. He does have a great matchup at home tonight against an offense with an 81 wRC+ and 15.0 K-BB% vs RHP though, so he could be interesting as a secondary option on DraftKings for just $5.6K. However, LHBs have a career .379 wOBA against him and this might also be the type of pitcher players want to target if they are paying up for pitching. Odubel Herrera is not low priced at all, but is the top bat in this lineup (128 wRC+, .169 ISO vs RHP this season). Cesar Hernandez (90 wRC+ vs RHP) is just $2.8K on FanDuel and has responded well to the recent lineup bump with a 150 wRC+ and 47.8 Hard% over the last week. Aaron Altherr makes a surprising return to the Philadelphia lineup. He is a RHB, but had a 154 wRC+ and .287 ISO vs RHP last season and costs the minimum on FanDuel. The Phillies are actually in rarefied air, finding themselves in the top half of the run projections tonight (4.1).
