This defenseman is having his best season since signing in Detroit
After being an incredibly dominant offensive force in Washington early in his career, Mike Green has struggled with injuries and has seen his career derail a bit. While he has turned things around a bit over the last few years, he is on pace for just his first 40 point season since signing in Detroit three years ago. Green plays on what is likely considered to be the second power play unit despite it having more raw offensive talent than what is believe to be the top unit. Detroit is in a great spot against a spiraling Senators team and the Wings should be able to win the special teams battle. While the Red Wings power play puts them just outside the top 10, the Senators are sporting the fourth worst penalty kill rating, killing off just 77.1 percent of their penalties. The Detroit PP should be able to go to work tonight and look for Green's power play unit to do some damage this evening.
Detroit doesn't depend on their defensemen, but...
Mike Green has shown big games from time to time, including two games ago when he clobbered the Calgary Flames for three assists. The veteran blue liner is far from the offensive force he was years ago in Washington, but there is a nice opportunity for Detroit in general as Colorado was dominated last night in Nashville, ultimately tallying two late goals to bring the score to 5-2. Erik Karlsson and Kevin Shattenkirk are the premier options from the blue line tonight, but Mike Green makes for an interesting pivot/pairing with one of the above.
