Nomar Mazara Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Far Too Cheap For the Environment
On top of dominating the board in terms of overall point totals, the Yankees and Padres are so far ahead of the rest of the pack tonight that they dominate value projections as well, especially the Padres, who are not priced sufficiently for Coors on either site. Luke Voit (120 wRC+, .233 ISO vs RHP this season) is not only a top five projected bat, but the top projected value on FanDuel ($3.1K) and also a top 10 projected value on DraftKings ($3.8K). In fact, each of the top three projected point per dollar values on DraftKings are Padres. Left-handed Padres to be more specific, as batters from that side have a .351 wBOA and .365 xwOBA against Chad Kuhl this year. Eric Hosmer (88 wRC+, .112 ISO), Nomar Mazara (122 wRC+, .131 ISO) and C.J. Abrams (105 wRC+, .119 ISO) all cost $2.1K or less on DK, which is simply mind-blowing.
The Yankees are the only other offense to feature multiple top 10 projected values on FanDuel and one of them is the top projected bat on the board because even for $4.2K, Aaron Judge (143 wRC+, .333 ISO) just projects that well against Mike Minor (RHBs .432 wOBA, .398 xwOBA this season). Josh Donaldson (82 wRC+, .204 ISO) also pulls double duty on both lists for $3.1K. Kyle Higashioka (70 wRC+, .170 ISO) costs $2.4K. Minor has been much better against LHBs (.291 wOBA, .256 ISO) and Joey Gallo (13 wRC+, .070 ISO) has struck out in more than half his plate appearances against LHP this year, but projections still see value in his longer term body of work for just $2.5K.
You may have to dip down to the bottom of the order, but DraftKings finds some value in a pair of min-priced Guardians against Lucas Giolito, who has over a 100 point reverse split this season. Myles Straw (65 wRC+) probably isn’t going to barrel him up, but you can see the value here, when RHBs have a .416 wOBA against Giolito this year. Nolan Jones (242 wRC+, .294 ISO) bats from the left side (.266 wOBA vs Giolito), but has simply been tearing the cover off the ball since being called up.
Happy Harvey Day!
I wrote this in my article yesterday - "MLB managers really should try to work their rotations to avoid having their lefties pitch against the White Sox. Obviously, this is not practical in a lot of cases, but it surprises me how often the White Sox seem to line up against a LH starter." The Royals have countered today by using Matt Harvey against the White Sox. Harvey is a washed up RHP with an 11% walk rate, a 6.61 xFIP, and a 67% hard hit rate allowed this year. Perhaps a lefty would be a better choice. Harvey is particularly awful against LHBs, making Mazara a solid value on today's slate. Grandal also makes sense on DK where you need a catcher. You really can't go wrong with any choice here.
Nomar Mazara scratched Tuesday; Scott Heineman replaces
Mazara has been scratched from the Texas Rangers original confirmed lineup and will not start in Tuesday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Scott Heineman, who will now play right field and slot into the seventh spot in the order, which bumps Danny Santana and Rougned Odor up to fifth and sixth, respectively. However, the remainder of the Rangers lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez at home this evening.
Mike Fiers has allowed a 4.37 HR/9 and .436 xwOBA over the past month
It has been a weird season for Fiers, who started out the season with a 7.03 ERA through April, then had a 2.45 ERA from May to July. Over the past month, Fiers has been getting roughed up again with an 8.34 ERA, 5.30 SIERA, 1.94 WHIP, 4.37 HR/9 and .436 xwOBA over the past 30 days. He gets a start tonight in Globe Life Park vs. the Rangers, who don’t have a great lineup but do have a very hitter-friendly home park that will make it tough for Fiers to turn it around. Shin-Soo Choo (.388 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nick Solak (.362), Danny Santana (.347), Nomar Mazara (.346), Ronald Guzman (.341), Willie Calhoun (.325), Rougned Odor (.308) and Elvis Andrus (.296) are all potential options for tonight. Odor has mostly had a rough year, but does have a .389 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks. All Rangers’ bats are $4.4k or more on DK with the exception of Ronald Guzman ($3.8k) and Jeff Mathis ($2k) who will both likely bat at the bottom of the order. Fiers has a bit of a reverse platoon split, but it’s not drastic and he can be targeted from either side of the plate. The Rangers currently have a 5.13 implied total vs. Fiers and the A’s.
Rangers are an intriguing stack vs. Berrios
Normally a guy to avoid when choosing hitters, there are a few reasons it might be wise to get some exposure to Rangers’ bats tonight. Already very hitter-friendly Globe Life Park projects to see a further increase in overall offense per WeatherEdge. Jose Berrios has some wide splits that we can target, one of which being his home-road split. Since 2017, Berrios has a 2.93 ERA, 20% K-BB and .277 xwOBA allowed in home games, compared to a 4.44 ERA, 13.6% K-BB and .316 xwOBA in road games. He is also much worse versus lefties; he has a 18.8% K-BB and .280 xwOBA allowed vs. righties compared to a 14.5% K-BB and .315 xwOBA vs. lefties. The Rangers have 5 lefties in their projected lineup for tonight’s matchup at home: Shin-Soo Choo (.378 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nomar Mazara (.354), Danny Santana (.344), Willie Calhoun (.320) and Rougned Odor (.307). Logan Forsythe (.363) and Elvis Andrus (.303) are also potential options, but will not have the platoon advantage versus Berrios. Given the hitting environment, Rangers’ hitters are pretty cheap as Choo, Andrus, Mazara, Odor and Forsythe are all $4.1k or less on Draftkings, while Calhoun is $4.4k and Santana is $4.7k. Also working in Rangers’ hitters favor is a hitter-friendly umpire in Paul Hoberg. They currently have a 5.20 implied line vs. Berrios and the Twins.
Jordan Zimmerman's velocity was down, 6.7 SwStr% in return from IL
Jordan Zimmermann returned from nearly a two month layoff to allow three runs in four innings against the Pirates, striking out four of 19 batters. His velocity was down and he had just a 6.7 SwStr%. His 91.2 Z-Contact% on the season is second worst on the board to go along with his 89.7 mph aEV. While Texas bats project well here (5.14 implied runs), they could still get lost in the shuffle with a full one-third of the board (10 teams) at 4.9 runs or higher tonight. LHBs have a particular advantage on a potentially still compromised pitcher (.367 wOBA, .350 xwOBA last 12 months). It doesn’t hurt this offense either that Joey Gallo (141 wRC+, .335 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is expected back tonight. Shin-soo Choo (137 wRC+, .216 ISO), Danny Santana (134 wRC+, .248 ISO), Nomar Mazara (103 wRC+, .188 ISO), Rougned Odor (94 wRC+, .222 ISO) and Ronald Guzman (113 wRC+, .228 ISO) are all dangerous hitters with power here.
Rangers bats in another good spot today at home vs. Nova
The Rangers will face Ivan Nova this afternoon in the heat at Globe Life Park and have a juicy 6.16 implied total. Nova continues to hang onto a rotation spot despite been terrible this year with a 6.01 ERA / 4.73 xFIP / 5.04 SIERA with an 8 % K-BB and 8.2% SwStr. His Statcast numbers are just as bad as he has a .355 xwOBA allowed, 88.4 MPH aEV and 7.4 % barrel rate. Nova is slightly more vulnerable vs. lefties; he has a .356 xwOBA allowed vs. LHB since 2018 compared to a .329 mark vs. RHB. The Rangers have just 2 right-handed bats in their projected lineup. Willie Calhoun (.460 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Shin-Soo Choo (.399), Nomar Mazara (.371), Ronald Guzman (.367) and Danny Santana (.354) are all great lefty options that mash RHP. Also in play are Elvis Andrus (.303), Rougned Odor (.284) and Asdrubal Cabrera (.276). Mazara cranked 2 homers yesterday and has been their hottest hitter over the past 14 days with a .392 xwOBA. Mazara and Calhoun are both great values on Draftings at just $4.4k each. Cabrera, Odor and Guzman are all $4k or less. Rangers bats will likely see decent ownership but they are in a great spot here and arguably underpriced given the matchup.
Rangers have highest implied total on the board tonight at home vs. Reynaldo Lopez
There should be a ton of runs to go around tonight in Arlington as two bad pitchers will faceoff in the heat at Globe Life Park. The game currently has an O/U of 11.5 and WeatherEdge is expecting an increase in runs scored (WeatherEdge available for premium subscribers). Reynaldo Lopez has been terrible this year with a 6.31 ERA / 5.71 xFIP / 5.10 SIERA with a 11% K-BB, 49.4% FB rate, 39% hard contact rate and 1.59 WHIP. He also has a .372 xwOBA, 10.4% barrel rate and 90.5 MPH aEV on the year. The Rangers lineup is missing some pop without Joey Gallo and Hunter Pence in the order but still has plenty of good options in this matchup. Shin-Soo Choo (140 wRC+, .225 ISO vs. RHP since 2018), Danny Santana (129 wRC+, .227 ISO), Asdrubal Cabrera (117 wRC+, .228 ISO), Willie Calhoun (111 wRC+, .196 ISO), Ronald Guzman (105 wRC+, .215 ISO), Nomar Mazara (.101 wRC+, .165 ISO), and Elvis Andrus (86 wRC+, .128 ISO) are all good options in tonight’s lineup. Santana has been their hottest hitter with a .360 xwOBA over the last 2 weeks, followed by Guzman at .356. All Rangers’ bats are available for $5k or less on Draftkings and will likely be a popular stack tonight. They have a 6.19 implied line vs. Lopez and the White Sox.
Balls Will Be Flying
The White Sox Reynaldo Lopez has allowed 48% fly balls to left-handed batters with just 17.6% strikeouts and 13.7% walks. This means we're likely to see both base runners and balls hit in the air in Texas. Nomar Mazara's .150 ISO doesn't jump out as much as some of his teammates, but his 50.4% hard hit rate against righties leads the team and his middle of the order lineup spot and reasonable salary on DK/FDRFT/FD make him a play for me in all formats.
Rangers in a nice spot at home vs. Indians’ Plutko
Adam Plutko has a 4.63 ERA / 5.20 xFIP and 4.91 SIERA with a 15.2% K-BB and 50.7% FB rate over 23 1/3 innings on the year. Plutko has done some things well this year, including just a 3.3% BB rate and 29.6% hard contact rate, but is ultimately a 5.21 ERA / 5.45 xFIP pitcher over 104 innings at the MLB level and projects as a roughly 5.50 ERA guy going forward according to projection systems. The Rangers are lacking some pop without Joey Gallo and Hunter Pence in the lineup but still have a decent amount of pop vs. right-handers even without them. Shin-Soo Choo (.386 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Logan Forsythe (.374), Nomar Mazara (.352), Elvis Andrus (.310), Delino Deshields (.304) and Rougned Odor (.289) are all solid options tonight in hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. Odor got off to a miserable start this year but has been a bit better recently with a .332 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks. With the exception of Andrus ($4.9k) and Choo ($5k) all Rangers bats can be had for $4.4k or less on Draftkings despite a healthy 5.34 implied total tonight.
