Renato Nunez Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

If Lefty Mashers Existed, Would They Look Like Him?

I expect Ryan Yarbrough to be somewhat popular today as people love picking on the Orioles. But this Baltimore offense is better than I think people give it credit for. Against left-handed pitching this season, the Orioles have the fifth LOWEST strikeout rate in the Majors at just 20.1 K%. I like this spot for the Orioles in tournaments, specifically guys like Renato Nunez. Nunez leads the team with a .241 ISO against left-handed pitching and while I consider Yarbrough a slightly above-average pitcher, I think this is a spot where Nunez and the Orioles can surprise some people.

Intriguing GPP Stack

The top five teams in ISO so far this season are the Padres, Yankees, Tigers, Angels, and Orioles. How many people had that on their list at the beginning of the season? The Tigers and Orioles have been massive surprises. Baltimore is an intriguing contrarian offense on this slate. Assuming the weather cooperates, I will be significantly overweight with Baltimore stacks. Their primary hitters are very affordable, and Jake Arrieta is a shell of his former self. His strikeouts have been trending down for years, and all his numbers have been on the steady decline. Stacking the O's also allows you the flexibility to spend up for other spots in your lineup. Ruiz and Nunez give you the most power upside of the bunch.

Stack of The day

Baltimore Orioles get the best matchup against Edwin Jackson. Jackson is just be horrible this season to both side of the plate. In his last 4 games he has given up 5 home runs and 22 runs. He is a low strikeout pitcher giving up 46% hard hit rate. Baltimore is not the best lineup in the league but they could easily win in this matchup.

Orioles are a good stack option vs. Rangers’ Hernandez

23 year old Jonathan Hernandez will be making the first start of his career for the Rangers tonight vs. Baltimore. Hernandez recently made his debut on August 21st, but has been pitching out of the bullpen and has totaled just 5 and 2/3 innings pitched, so there isn’t much to draw from his MLB stats thus far. Over 96 innings in AA this year, Hernandez posted an unimpressive 5.16 ERA / 4.30 FIP / 4.00 xFIP with a 13.6% K-BB. Projection systems vary a bit on him, as they have his ERA projected anywhere from 4.75 to 5.75 going forward. Trey Mancini (.340 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Chance Sisco (.329), Anthony Santander (.325), Jonathan Villar (.323), Renato Nunez (.320), Dwight Smith Jr. (.309), Rio Ruiz (.300) and Hanser Alberto (.291) are all in play tonight. Orioles bats are especially cheap on Fanduel, where Mancini is the most expensive bat at $3.6k and all but 3 hitters are under $3k. On Draftkings they are a bit pricier, as the top 3 batters in the projected order (Villar, Mancini, Santander) are all over $4.5k and only 4 hitters are below $4k. Santander has been the Orioles hottest bat over the past 2 weeks with a .406 xwOBA, followed by Mancini with a .378 mark.

Orioles should be low-owned in good spot vs. Dillon Peters

Dillon Peters is a career 5.45 ERA / 5.02 xFIP pitcher over 72 2/3 innings despite seeing a good amount of those innings in pitcher-friendly Marlins Park. He also owned a 6.47 ERA / 5.33 FIP / 4.81 xFIP over 57 innings in AAA this year with an ugly 1.74 HR/9. Per Statcast he 352 xwOBA allowed and 89.8 MPH aEV in his career. The Orioles haven’t been a good offense this year by any measure, but they do have a 101 wRC+ over the past 30 days and some intriguing options in their lineup tonight. Trey Mancini (.388 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Pedro Severino (.382), Renato Nunez, Anthony Santander (.308) and Hanser Alberto (.295) are all good options tonight. Santander has been their hottest hitter with a .394 xwOBA over the past 30 days, followed by Renato Nunez (.346) and Trey Mancini (.345). Alberto and Severino are both nice values on Draftkings as they are under $3.4k. As a whole, the Orioles are a very affordable stack on both sites and will likely see very low ownership. They currently have a 4.11 implied line vs. the Angels and make for a solid contrarian play tonight.

Kikuchi has highest 30-day SIERA (6.11) of all starters today

If you’re playing the late afternoon slate, it might be wise to look at stacking against Yusei Kikuchi, who has really struggled. Over the past 30 days, Kikuchi has posted a 6.11 SIERA, 6.49 xFIP, 10.35 ERA, 0.9% K-BB and 42.7% hard contact rate. He’s allowed a .456 xwOBA (!!) and 89.2 MPH aEV over that time frame. The Orioles don’t have a good offense, but they are in a great spot here and will have plenty of affordable bats in their lineup for this matchup. Pedro Severino (.428 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Trey Mancini (.402) and Renato Nunez (.346) have all mashed LHP this year; Mancini is $4.7k on Draftkings but Severino and Nunez can be had under $4k. Hanser Alberto (.287) will leadoff, and Jonathan Villar (.249) is also a nice play given the stolen base potential. Keon Broxton is also in play with a career 103 wRC+ vs. LHP and a price of just $2.9k on Draftkings. The Mariners bullpen as a whole has also struggled with a 7th worst 4.53 SIERA over the past 30 days. The Orioles have a 4.03 implied total vs. Kikuchi and the Mariners Sunday afternoon.

Some value bats available in Baltimore lineup tonight

Baltimore has a decent matchup with Mike Leake in Seattle tonight and their lineup has some bats with deflated pricing on Draftkings. Leake hasn’t been anything special this year with a 4.14 ERA , 4.68 xFIP and 4.58 SIERA with a 13.3% K-BB, 40.7% hard contact rate, 37.3% FB rate and just an 8% SwStr. His Statcast numbers show more vulnerability as he has allowed a .349 xwOBA, 10.3% barrel rate and an ugly 91.4 MPH aEV so far on the year. Baltimore is one of the league’s worst offenses, but given their pricing and the matchup, they can certainly have some use in lineups tonight. Chance Sisco (.339 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Dwight Smith Jr. (.326), Renato Nunez (.311), Jonathan Villar (.309), Rio Ruiz (.301), Chris Davis (.298) and Anthony Santander (.296) are all potential options. With the exception of Dwight Smith Jr., all these guys are available for $3.8k or less on Draftkings. Villar projects to leadoff at just $3.8k and is always a threat for a steal or two. Rio Ruiz stands out as the best value at a price of just $2.5k. Sisco ($3.3k) and Santander ($3.3k) project to hit in the top half of the lineup and are intriguing plays as well.

Cheap Power Upside

I hate the ballpark, but I absolutely love this matchup for Nunez tonight. LeBlanc has been awful against right-handed hitters to the tune of a .370 wOBA and .243 ISO. He also has a 13.2% strikeout rate and a 33.6% hard to soft contact ratio against righties. Meanwhile, Nunez has a .293 ISO with a .377 wOBA and a 92.6 average exit velocity against lefties this season.

Cheap Power Upside

I don't like taking hitters against Anderson in Oakland, but I think we have some really strong upside with Nunez at this price point. Anderson has a .297 wOBA with a .103 ISO against right-handed hitters this season. With that said, he has a 44% hard-hit rate with a 14.1% strikeout rate as well. With Nunez being more of a flyball hitter, I'm not as worried about Anderson's ability to generate groundballs in this matchup. Nunez has a .303 ISO with a .388 wOBA and a 316.8 average air distance against left-handed pitching this season.

Orioles are a solid stack option vs. Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson hasn’t shown a ton of success in the Majors: In 136 career innings as a starter and reliever, Johnson has a 4.69 ERA / 4.94 xFIP / 4.50 SIERA with a 10.8% K-BB, 1.58 HR/9, 43.5% FB rate and just a 7.6% SwStr. The Orioles haven’t been a great offense this year but have a decent amount of solid options vs. LHP and are very affordable. Pedro Severino (.432 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Trey Mancini (.418), Renato Nunez, (.352), Hanser Alberto (.282) and Keon Broxton (.278) are all intriguing options today in the Baltimore lineup. Alberto will leadoff and costs just $3.4k on Draftkings. Severino is batting 3rd at just $4k and will likely be a very popular play given that he has mashed LHP this year. Renato Nunez is also a good value batting 4th at just $4k. Anthony Santander is another option at just $3.9k, he has a 172 wRC+ this year although in just 34 PA. Severino and Mancini have been the Orioles’ hottest hitters; each have an xwOBA over .400 the last 14 days. The Orioles currently have a 4.71 implied line versus Johnson and the Red Sox.
