Rich Hill Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Save A Little Up Top
Lucas Giolito is the best pitcher on this slate, but his matchup against the Cubs is far tougher than what Rich Hill is dealing with tonight against a Giants team that ranks 29th in ISO and wOBA against left-handed pitching. While Hill is a pitch count concern, he's been between 90-104 pitches in five straight starts, and at that level with his efficiency, he is still good for 6-7 innings and another quality start with strikeout upside.
Top SP Pivot
Everyone is going to be looking to pay up for Max Scherzer so I think a good Pivot is Rich Hill. We saw in back to back to back games Rich Hill go over 100 pitches. He is also going into a really good pitcher ballpark in San Francisco against a Giants team that doesn't have a lot of dangerous right handed bats. Hill this season has a 28% strikeout rate and has allowed only three earned runs in his last 4 games. I like this spot for Hill tonight, especially if he gets a little over looked in tournaments.
Sneaky Pitching Option In GPPs
Rich Hill is a great low-owned pitching option on today’s slate. Hill goes up against the Rays, who have really struggled to left handed pitching. The Rays have a 30% strikeout rate this season to left handed pitching, while Hill is coming off his best start of the season, where he had ten strikeouts. I really like his price tag on FanDuel at $8,300, but he is still in play for me across all sites in GPPs.
Looking For The K Upside
Rich Hill against the Padres is a matchup I will be targeting today in tournaments. Rich Hill looked decent in his first start, giving up only one earned run while striking out six batters. Hill gets a park shift advantage against a lineup with undisciplined hitters. If his curveball is working I could see him racking up the strikouts in this matchup.
Every pitcher below $10K today
Special post-season pricing has every pitcher below $10K today and the sites have done a good job making these pitchers very close in value. The most positive run environment on the board sees Mike Clevinger (25.6 K%, 3.86 SIERA, .296 xwOBA) take on Dallas Keuchel (17.5 K%, 4.15 SIERA, .303 xwOBA). Clevinger will not have a long leash in an elimination game and is facing an offense with a 104 wRC+ and 19.2 K% vs RHP. Keuchel is the only pitcher on the board below a 22 K% and faces a tough offense as well (99 wRC+, 19.1 K% vs LHP). Despite the lack of upside, Keuchel does generate a lot of weak ground balls (53.7 GB%) and costs just $5.7K on DraftKings. He also may have the longest leash of today's group with his team up 2-0. Rich Hill (27.4 K%, 3.57 SIERA, .314 xwOBA) averaged just 5.1 IP this season (second lowest on the board) and has to contend with another tough offense (107 wRC+, 20.1 K% vs LHP) in Atlanta, probably the most pitcher friendly environment in play today. Mike Foltynewicz (27.2 K%, 3.77 SIERA, .288 xwOBA) was treated poorly by the Dodgers in the first game of this series. They are tied for the split high wRC+ (116) and strikeout rate (22.5%) against RHP today. In the most power friendly environment, Luis Severino (28.2 K%, 3.26 SIERA, .310 xwOBA) is the most talented pitcher on the board and the one with the most upside. He did have some control issues in the wild card game, but was nearly unhittable. Of course, the Red Sox are tied for the split high 116 wRC+ and split low 19 K% vs RHP. He's opposed by Nathan Eovaldi (22.2 K%, 3.71 SIERA, .299 xwOBA), who has to face a deep Yankee lineup (109 wRC+, 22.5 K%, 16.8 HR/FB vs RHP) as the largest underdog of the day. He averaged just over five innings per start, worst on the slate. The bottom line is this is a tightly priced group of pitchers, all facing difficult offenses.
Division On The Line
Being the last game of the regular season we're looking for teams that still have something to play for, and well, there aren't many left. The Dodgers need to win to win their division and Hill will get the ball in a a favorable road matchup against an anemic Giants offense. There is some concern here that Hill could see a short leash with a full bull pen to deploy if he gets in trouble but it still remains a plus spot for the Dodgers lefty who still has plenty of strikeout upside left in the tank.
Alternative SP1
If you're fading JV's high price tag, Rich Hill is the guy you're slotting in as SP1 across the industry. Hill has been hit hard at times this year but has been able to post strong strikeout numbers (27.3 K%) all season long. The Padres projected lineup has a strikeout rate north of 21% versus LHP and Hill gets the added benefit of facing the opposing pitcher at the place. It's a reasonable move to forego JV and pitch Hill in order to get some bigger bats into your lineup.
So many questions among tonight's starting pitchers
There aren't a lot of poor pitchers on Friday night's slate. Not a lot of pitchers that players should very obviously want to attack, but there also aren't many pitchers below the highest priced guys that players should be in a huge hurry to roster. At a very marginal price tag around $7K, Nick Pivetta continues to post very strong peripherals (27.8 K%, 3.03 SIERA, .302 xwOBA) without the results. While both the strikeout rate (21.5%) and SIERA (4.49) have greatly suffered over the last month, his xwOBA (.291) has actually decreased. He's also facing contact prone offense (20.4 K% vs RHP) in Atlanta that's looking to put the Phillies away. He also may not get much defensive support and is likely to have a short leash with 16 relievers in the bullpen in an extremely meaningful game for the Phils. Andrew Heaney (23.4 K%, 3.78 SIERA, .325 xwOBA) is a quality pitcher in a great park for just $7.9K on DraftKings, but facing a very dangerous lineup (Houston 122 wRC+, 20.1 K% vs LHP). Zack Greinke (23.8 K%, 3.59 SIERA, .319 xwOBA) is less than $10K at home against the Rockies (78 wRC+ on the road and vs RHP). He has just a 16.1 K% over the last month though. Luis Castillo (23.6 K%, 3.84 SIERA, .339 xwOBA) has allowed one run or less in three of four starts and is in Miami (83 wRC at home, 85 wRC+ vs RHP) for less than $9K. Rich Hill (27.3 K%, 3.66 SIERA, .326 xwOBA) hosts the Padres (89 wRC+, 15.8 K-BB% vs LHP). He combines a 5.00 ERA with a 34.2 K% over the last month (20.8 HR/FB) and has only exceeded 90 pitches once over his last five starts.
Salary Matters
Jacob deGrom and Gerrit Cole headline the slate tonight, and if salary were not a thing, these would be the guys to start with. I would love to pay up to deGrom in cash games, but it may be tough tonight. Rich Hill comes in at a significant savings at home against the Padres. There is very little gap in recent performance between Hill and Cole, with Hill striking out 7-8 batters in six straight starts and piling up wins for this good Dodgers team. Hill's strikeouts have been trending up all season, up from 27.3% to 29.7% in the second half and 34.2% in the past month. The risk of right-handed power from San Diego is outweighed by the high strikeouts of their power bats.
Tough Pricing Makes the Discount Appealing
Hill has been tremendous since coming back from the DL a couple months back. He fixed his mechanics and he hasn’t been dealing with any blisters (at least not that we know of). He’s been great in this ballpark throughout his career and he draws one of the top matchups on the board. The Mets’ projected lineup has an average xwOBA of only .309 with a strikeout rate of 26% against southpaws. This may be a hot take, but given how difficult the pricing is tonight, I actually prefer Hill over Verlander in both cash games and tournaments.
