Sandy Leon Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

J.D. Martinez (back) scratched Monday; Sandy Leon replaces

Martinez has been scratched from the Boston Red Sox original confirmed lineup and will not start in the Monday’s matchup against the Kansas City Royals due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Sandy Leon, who will now handle the catching duties and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Red Sox batting order. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Boston faces off against left-hander Mike Montgomery at home this evening.

Christian Vazquez scratched Friday; Sandy Leon will catch

Christian Vazquez has been scratched from the Boston lineup. Sandy Leon will now catch. Leon has just a 59 wRC+ vs RHP, while Charlie Morton actually has a reverse split this season.

Week's hottest hitters results in very few playable bats tonight.

Six batters have a wRC+ above 300 over the last week, though players are unlikely to use any of them tonight. .Corey Seager (473 wRC+, 77.8 Hard%, three HRs) has missed the last couple of days with a hamstring injury. Tucker Barnhart (399 wRC+, 66.7 Hard%, 0 HRs) and Robinson Chirinos (358 wRC+, 71.4 Hard%, two HRs) barely meet the 10 PA minimum threshold. Josh Reddick (332 wRC+, 53.3 Hard%, two HRs) often sits against LHP. Howie Kendrick (327 wRC+, 50 Hard%, 0 HRs) has a tough matchup in Seattle against a reverse split pitcher (James Paxton RHBs .303 wOBA since last season). Michael Taylor (301 wRC+, 72.7 Hard%, three HRs) will likely bat eighth against Jake Arrieta (RHBs .263 wOBA since last season). We find some more useful names in the next tier like Curtis Granderson (285 wRC+, 50 Hard%, three HRs) vs Dan Straily, Joc Pederson (280 wRC+, 50 Hard%, two HRs) vs Jesse Chavez, and even Sandy Leon (276 wRC+, 55.6 Hard%, one HR) vs Hector Santiago.

The Red Sox have an implied run line more than a half run higher than any other offense

The Boston Red Sox have a significant lead on the field with a 6.29 implied run line, well over half a run more than any other team. Eight more teams are implied for 4.9 runs or more. More affordable Boston bats like Dustin Pedroia, Chris Young, Sandy Leon, Jackie Bradley Jr. and whoever ends up at 1B if Hanley Ramirez misses again (Hector Santiago has actually been worse against LHBs) could provide a pathway to pay up for Max Scherzer. LH Cleveland bats should be popular against Tyson Ross as will Toronto stacks against Kevin Gausman (RHBs .373 wOBA since last season). Another spot players may want to look for affordable bats is LH Pirates. Alex Cobb has surrendered a .359 wOBA (37.3 Hard%) to LHBs since last season and the Pirates are employing a more balanced lineup in recent weeks. Adam Frazier (105 wRC+) has been a league average bat against RHP, while both Josh Bell and John Jaso have an ISO above .200 against them. On the other side of that matchup, batters from either side have a wOBA above .340 against Trevor Williams, though RHBs have a hard hit rate nearly 10 points higher (34.7% to 25.4%). The Rays have just a middling 4.42 implied run line.

Several cheap Catchers can help players get to more expensive pitching or bats

With Max Scherzer and another Coors game on the slate, player are bound to be looking for cheap bats somewhere and a good place to start is the Dodger lineup if Andrew Toles ($3K on DK) bats leadoff. Toles has a 123 wRC+, .189 ISO vs RHP and Ivan Nova, though off to a strong start, has shown a significant vulnerability to LHBs (.348 wOBA since 2015). With Catcher looking fairly weak behind Sanchez tonight, players might want to drop down in the order to find the red hot Sandy Leon (390 wRC+, 3 HRs over the last week) for $3.2K on DK, $2.7K on FD in a great spot in Milwaukee against Wily Peralta (LHBs .385 wOBA since 2015). Geovany Soto (133 wRC+, .245 ISO vs LHP since 2015) is another Catcher punt option for $2.5K or less on either site against the punishable Hector Santiago (RHBs 37.9 Hard% since 2015), though this may be the coldest game of the night with temperatures not expected to reach 50. Jason Castro (102 wRC+, .195 ISO vs RHP since 2015) is another cheap Catcher ($2.9K or less) on the other side of that matchup against Mike Pelfrey (LHBs .379 wOBA since 2015). Yonder Alonso has a 50% fly ball rate and five HRs over the last week. He and Matt Joyce (117 wRC+, .206 ISO vs RHP since 2016) are both sub-$3K bats on either site against rookie Alex Meyer. FanDuel players can add Joe Mauer (214 wRC+ last seven days), also with a higher fly ball rate this year (37.9%) for $2.6K, Brad Miller (114 wRC+, .234 ISO vs RHP since 2016) for $2.6K and Joc Pederson (142 wRC+, .265 ISO vs RHP since 2015) for $2.7K if looking to afford Scherzer.

Trio of Yankees (Gardner, Holliday, Judge) among the hottest bats on the slate

Sandy Leon is the hottest bat in the majors over the last week (390 wRC+, 66.7 Hard%, 3 HRs)(10 PA min.). If in the lineup, he's an comfortable Catcher punt for $3.2K or less when there are few otherwise strong options behind the plate. The next four batters with a wRC+ exceeding 300 don't often play against RHP (Marwin Gonzalez, Trey Mancini, Chris Young, Chris Taylor and Tommy Pham) and may not be in their team's lineup tonight. Dipping just below 300 we find a trio of Yankees in Brett Gardner (285 wRC+, 45 Hard%, 4 HRs), Matt Holliday (280 wRC+, 35.7 Hard%, 2 HRs) and Aaron Judge (277 wRC+, 46.7 Hard%, 3 HRs). There are five offenses projected for more runs than the Yankees (4.56) tonight, though they take the top offense vs RHP (133 wRC+) into a power friendly park in Cincinnati against a power prone pitcher (Tim Adleman 18 HRs allowed in 91 MLB innings).

Low cost Dodger LHBs could help players afford a Scherzer or Carrasco

We're looking at another slate where Coors offenses are the only ones projected for more than five runs and the Astros coming in at just below against Bartolo Colon. On a 14 game slate it's going to be easy enough to look elsewhere for bats tonight. Starting behind the plate, it might be difficult to fade Gary Sanchez (176 wRC+, .309 ISO vs RHP) against the HR prone Tim Adleman (RHBs .336 wOBA) for $3.2K on FD, but Sandy Leon has been hot over the last week (390 wRC+, 66.7 Hard%, 3 HRs) for much less on DraftKings. First base has several strong options, such as Cody Bellinger (200 wRC+, .471 ISO vs RHP) against Ivan Nova (LHBs .348 wOBA since 2015), Miguel Cabrera (156 wRC+, .210 ISO vs LHP since 2015) in Arizona (Robbie Ray RHBs .341 wOBA). Carlos Santana (127 wRC+, .239 ISO vs RHP since 2015) vs Mike Bollinger (LHBs .407 wOBA since 2015) and more. Kris Bryant (162 wRC+, .294 ISO vs LHP career) is going to be the tougheset fade, especially with Miguel Sano serving his suspension tonight. Corey Seager (158 wRC+, .221 ISO) against Nova and Brad Miller (118 wRC+, .215 ISO vs RHP since 2015) against Chris Young (LHBs .461 wOBA) make for strong SS plays. The OF offers Andrew Benintendi (155 wRC+, .224 ISO vs RHP) vs Wily Peralta (LHBs .385 wOBA), Joc Pederson (133 wRC+, .240 ISO vs RHP since 2015) and Andrew Toles (123 wRC+, .189 ISO vs RHP) against Nova. In fact low cost LH Dodger bats are beginning to look like a potential contrarian stack tonight. Nova has been good this year, but has been HR prone in the past and the Dodgers have a 116 sOPS+ (Baseball-Reference) against ground ball pitchers. Paying down for potentially potent Dodger bats should allow players to grab one of the more expensive arms.

Salvador Perez scratched Monday, Cuthbert up a spot

Perez does have a .233 ISO vs LHP, but there are reasonable pivots behind the plate, starting with Evan Gattis facing a lefty for much less on FanDuel or Sandy Leon facing Miley in Boston on DraftKings at a similar price point. For the Royals, all of the attractive bats are still at the top, but Cheslor Cuthbert (128 wRC+, .368 wOBA, .160 ISO vs LHP), mentioned earlier, bumps up a spot. Drew Butera will replace Perez and bat ninth.

Hanley Ramirez has a 178 wRC+ and .310 ISO vs LHP this season

It's very difficult to maintain an 8.22 ERA with a 23.4 K%, yet that's exactly what Wade Miley has done over the last month. Obviously, he's not that bad, but this is certainly not the pitcher players should want to roster in possibly the only truly awful spot on the board tonight, facing the Red Sox (122 wRC+ at home, 111 wRC+ vs LHP, 122 wRC+ last seven days) at Fenway. While Miley has only allowed hard contact at a 32.4% rate this season and LHBs have actually hit him harder (36.8 Hard%) this season, 21 of his 24 HRs have been surrendered to RHBs as he has a decreased GB% against him. There are seven RHBs in tonight's lineup for the Red Sox, a lineup projected to score a slate high 5.6 runs. No other offense comes within half a run. Looking at the top bats against LHP this season for the Red Sox, we come across a few bargains and while the first half of the lineup are all fairly good against southpaws, it's Ramirez, Young, and Leon who all have a wRC+ above 175 and ISO above .250. Ramirez and Young have ISO's above .300 even with a wRC+ above 190 over the last week. All three are great plays tonight, though Hanley's price is elevated by more than $2K from FanDuel to DraftKings.

Marco Estrada has allowed at least five runs in three of last four starts

Marco Estrada has gone no more than five innings with at least five runs in three of his last four starts and has really struggled since injuring his back and missing three weeks in July with a BABIP above .300 since returning. While that makes Boston bats more interesting here, it's really only Ortiz (175 wRC+, .353 ISO) and Betts (139 wRC+, .225 ISO) who have mashed RHP this year, at least of those in the top half the batting order. Of course, players are paying up to get them, even in what might be considered a marginal matchup. Sandy Leon (129 wRC+, .173 ISO vs RHP this season) is a reasonably affordable Catcher for around $3K on either site.
