Scooter Gennett Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Reds bats are an intriguing leverage play vs. Flaherty

With Jack Flaherty’s ownership projected to be very high on both sites, there is some leverage to be had by stacking Reds’ bats. Flaherty has been a bit better than his 4.41 ERA suggests, but he’s very prone to giving up homers (1.73 HR/9) and loud contact (40.5% hard contact rate, .392 xwOBA on contact). Flaherty has been much more vulnerable in road starts, where he has a 4.48 ERA and .314 xwOBA compared to a 3.06 ERA and .269 xwOBA in home starts since 2018. He’s also more vulnerable versus left-handed batters, allowing a .314 xwOBA to lefties but a .274 xwOBA to righties since 2018. Jesse Winker (.352 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Josh VanMeter (.337), Joey Votto (.327) and Scooter Gennett (.179 xwOBA but a career 117 wRC+ vs. RHP) are all left-handed options in the Reds order. Also in play are Yasiel Puig (.379 xwOBA over the past month) and Eugenio Suarez (.343). Reds bats are very affordable on both sites, and there 4.75 implied total isn’t bad at all.

LHBs are in a strong spot against Dakota Hudson (.379 wOBA) in Cincy

Dakota Hudson has been increasing his strikeouts (21.4 K%, 12.5 SwStr% last four starts). Combining anything near a league average strikeout rate with his 60.1 GB% would make him an interesting pitcher. However, after allowing just a single HR over a 10 start stretch, he’s also allowed five of them over this four start stretch and sustains a double digit walk rate on the year (10.3%). Due to the power surge, his xwOBA has actually increased over the last month (.351). The ground balls keep the overall barrels reasonable (7.3% per BBE) despite contact that leans a bit too much on the hard side (89.4 mph aEV, 41.9% 95+ mph EV). He also has a substantial platoon split which favors Jesse Winker (117 wRC+, .230 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Joey Votto (94 wRC+, .139 ISO) at the top of the order, along with Scooter Gennett (103 wRC+, .176 ISO) in the middle. LHBs own a .379 wOBA with an xwOBA 10 points higher and a 49.4 GB% that’s 20 points lower than RHBs against Hudson. While this trio of lefties hasn’t performed up to expected standards this season, price tags at $4K or below on DraftKings and $3.1K or below on FanDuel serve to compensate in a power friendly park that could provide an additional weather boost tonight. The Reds (4.91) are one of just six teams implied for 4.9 runs or higher tonight.

Underpriced Stack For The Weather Conditions

With the wind expected to be blowing out at 12mph in Wrigley Field, the bats on both sides in this game are underpriced given those conditions. Although Kyle Hendricks is a good real-life pitcher I usually don't target against with stacks, nearly all the Reds bats are under $4k on DraftKings. Between Gennett, Suarez, Votto, Senzel, Dietrich (or Winker if he's in the order), as long as they have decent FB rates, any contact in the air tonight has potential to land over the fence.

Load Up The Too Cheap Lefties

The Reds left-handed bats have not gotten enough of a salary boost for a trip to Coors Field. Jon Gray is a good pitcher, but is more attackable with left-handed batters, where his strikeouts and ground balls fall to average. I started with Joey Votto as the 2nd Reds Core Play after Jesse Winker, but after building lineups today, I'm shifting more exposure to Scooter Gennett to save a few dollars at the weaker second base position.

Expected Back From Injury

Scooter was dealing with a hamstring injury before the All-Star Break but is expected to be back in the lineup when the Reds square off against Jon Gray in Coors on Friday night. Gennett is a talented offensive player when he has the platoon advantage (117 wRC+) and is underpriced for his skill-set. Context (Coors) helps boost Gennett's expected production as he headlines a typically weak second base position.

Jhoulys Chacin has a .354 xwOBA with more than 40% of contact above a 95 mph EV

Surprisingly, Jhoulys Chacin has a 6.2% Barrels/BBE rate that’s top 20% of the board tonight, yet he owns just a 7.7 K-BB% with a 35 GB% and 40.9% of his contact above a 95 mph EV. He’s allowed 15 HRs in 15 starts. How he’s kept his Barrel rate so low is a complete mystery, but with a 5.42 ERA, 6.96 DRA and .354 xwOBA, he’s exactly the kind of pitcher players want to attack in a power friendly park tonight. Never mind five runs, there are four teams above six implied runs on this slate, which puts the Reds at 4.94 just near the middle of this board. While Chacin had a substantial platoon split last season and really for his career, RHBs have joined LHBs in pounding him this year for a .356 wOBA and 10 of his 15 HRs allowed in just 43 more PAs. That said, expect the Reds to line up LH heavy toward the top with Jesse Winker (139 wRC+, .249 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Joey Votto (110 wRC+, .157 ISO), Scooter Gennett (125 wRC+, .207 ISO), and Derek Dietrich (118 wRC+, .244 ISO) all projecting well, along with Eugenio Suarez (101 wRC+, .220 ISO) from the right-hand side, who owns a 211 wRC+ and 57.9 Hard% over the last week.

Contrarian GPP Offense

The bats in the games at Coors Field and Arlington are going to get the most attention tonight, and anything else will likely count as a contrarian build. Don't sleep on the Reds. They have been playing better baseball of late, and they draw a fine matchup here against a declining, below average starter in Jhoulys Chacin. Chacin has an ERA, SIERA, and xFIP in the mid-fives this year, and he has allowed hard contact at a massive 47% clip. His batted ball profile shows a lean toward struggling against lefties, and his neutral splits this year are largely a result of luck-driven factors. I like the lefty stack here, especially now that Scooter Gennett is healthy. Gennett, Dietrich, and Winker make for a great mini-stack, and Votto could also be thrown in if you want to stack it up even more.

Nine walks in two starts this season and facing a deep, powerful lineup

Since the start of July, Freddy Peralta has a 25.1 K%, but a 15.4 BB%, 6.13 ERA, 4.92 FIP and LHBs have a .442 wOBA against him with a 52.1 Hard% and 2.4 K-BB%. His one pitch trick without any control over where that 91 mph fastball goes has been exposed by left-handed batters. Unfortunately, the Reds only have one who has been above average against RHP over the last calendar year: Scooter Gennett (132 wRC+, .195 ISO). Mason Williams (95 wRC+, .121 ISO) certainly plays for the minimum on FD and just $3.4K on DK against those stats too. Both he and Gennett are above a 200 wRC+ over the last week. RHBs still have just a .234 wOBA against Peralta over that span. The Brewers are the top projected offense on the afternoon slate by a mile. Their 5.73 run line is a full run above the next best team. Robert Stephenson had a 28.9 K% at AAA this season, but has walked nine of 31 batters faced in two major league starts so far. For his short career so far, which encompasses just under 600 batters faced, batters from either side are within 11 points of a .350 wOBA against him. At least each of the first five batters in the order for the Brewers are rosterable. Only Mike Moustakas (95 wRC+, .200 ISO) is below a 100 wRC+ vs RHP over the last calendar year from that group and only Lorenzo Cain (105 wRC+, .091 ISO) is below a .200 ISO. Christian Yelich (137 wRC+, .212 ISO) is the premium bat here as Milwaukee plays slightly more power friendly for LHBs, though Jesus Aguilar (141 wRC+, .287 ISO) and Travis Shaw (122 wRC+, .266 ISO) can wreck baseballs as well.

Game Stack

All season I have been more likely to stack against Chase Anderson than to roster him and that remains the case on Monday night. The Reds are my favorite "sneaky" stack of the night as they'll square off against homer prone Anderson (1.67 HR/9, 15.2 HR/FB%) at Miller Park. Even with the loss of Joey Votto from the lineup, the middle of this Reds order does provide some pop (especially Suarez) and the top of the order can give you some stolen base upside in Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza. The Reds are a low probability stack but will see minuscule ownership. If you're not sold on a full-out Reds stack, look closely at a full out game stack and use some Reds hitters to help fill in your Brewers stacks.

Top bat may be missing tonight, but a surprising name in the leadoff spot for a well projected offense

Despite the absence of Joey Votto, the Cincinnati Reds still have one of the top run lines on the board (4.91) at home against the Giants. Casey Kelly makes the spot start and has not made a major league start in the last two calendar years, facing just 24 major league batters in relief since last season. He's faced around 150 batters from each side of the plate for his career, around half of those innings coming in 2012. Batters from either side of the plate have a wOBA against him between .365 and .370. The most interesting development here might be Billy Hamilton (65 wRC+, .071 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) at a low price. He may only need to reach base once to pay off and probably stands a better chance of that than normal considering how strongly this offense is projected. Jose Peraza (87 wRC+, .106 ISO) also only draws value from his low cost and great lineup spot in this matchup. Scooter Gennett (133 wRC+, .200 ISO), Eugenio Suarez (119 wRC+, .223 ISO) and even Preston Tucker (114 wRC+, .192 ISO) are higher quality bats. If you're looking for a punt catcher, you might be able to do worse than Curt Casali (144 wRC+, .222 ISO) for just $3K on DraftKings too.
