Attempting to Navigate the Top of the Final Full Pitching Board

Congratulations to all the hardcore daily fantasy baseball players reading this for making it to the very end of the regular season. The final full slate includes 14 games all starting at the same time on a Wednesday afternoon in the name of competitive integrity and none of them mean a darn thing. We still don’t even know who’s pitching some of these games (TBD is going to be a very busy pitcher today), while lineups that we’re merely guessing at will become clearer shortly. Look for players with personal goals and perhaps avoid players from teams playing in the wild card round.

The most expensive pitcher on the board is…no, he’s no longer pitching. Neither is he. The new most expensive arm on the board on either site, Shohei Ohtani has completed at least seven innings in three of his last six starts with a total of four runs allowed and just two barrels (2.2%). He’s even allowed just 22 hits over these 40 innings. With a 33.1 K% (26.4 K-BB%) and 87.1 mph EV (33.6% 95+ mph EV) on the season, all estimators are well within half a run of his 2.35 ERA. He ends the season in a great spot in Oakland (83 wRC+, 24.1 K% vs RHP) and is essentially tied for the top projection on the board with the next pitcher with no other pitchers even close. Ohtani also projects as the third (DK) or fourth (FD) best value on the board.

Corbin Burnes most recently threw eight shutout innings at the Marlins with seven strikeouts. It may not be on par with his Cy Young winning 2021, but a 23.7 K-BB% with a 34.4% hard hit rate and just 5.8% Barrels/BBE is nothing to sneeze at. His 2.92 ERA is within half a run of all estimators and within a quarter run of all except a 2.56 DRA. With cooler weather and roof closures in Milwaukee, it’s a more pitcher friendly environment, while the Diamondbacks have a 96 wRC+ and 21.8 K% vs RHP. As mentioned, Burnes is essentially tied with Ohtani for the top projection on the board at a slightly lower cost, which makes him the second best projected value on either site.

The remaining two $10K arms are both going to the post-season, but will have a week off and should get in some decent work here, but probably not their normal workloads. Baltimore snapped Framber Valdez’s Quality Start streak (5.1 IP – 4 ER – 2 HR – 1 BB – 6 K), but then Tampa Bay did him even worse last time out (5.1 IP – 6 ER – 3 BB – 2 K). He strikes out batters at a slightly above average rate (22.4%), but a 66.9 GB% lets him get away with an 8.2 BB% and still pitch deep into games, while these last two games has brought his now 2.89 ERA much closer to estimators ranging from a 3.06 xFIP to a 3.56 DRA. The Phillies (117 wRC+, 22.5 K% vs LHP) may choose to rest key players for their date with St Louis on Friday. Valdez does project as the third best arm on the board, but far behind Ohtani and Burnes and as a middle of the board value.

Clayton Kershaw has five straight Quality Starts with a total of five runs and three barrels (3.6%) allowed over this span. He’s up to a 22.3 K-BB% on the season, allowing just 4.0% Barrels/BBE with a 33.6% hard hit rate. His 2.30 ERA is only a quarter or a run below a matching 2.56 xERA and FIP. It’s very unlikely he’ll see a full workload tonight. The Rockies actually have a 102 wRC+ with just a 19.8 K% vs LHP, but it’s a near lock that the Dodgers will abbreviate Kershaw here. As such, he projects as tonight’s sixth best arm and a slightly worse value that Valdez.

The only other pitcher reaching $9K on both sites, Merrill Kelly was having a career year, until October hit. All of a sudden, he’s allowed 22 runs, 11 home runs and 15 barrels (17%) over his last five starts. He still has 11 Quality Starts of at least seven innings with two runs or less (Super Quality Start?) with now a 14.2 K-BB% and 8.3% Barrels/BBE. His 3.43 ERA is below estimators ranging from a 3.62 xERA/DRA to a 4.03 SIERA. The Brewers have a 108 wRC+, 23.2 K% and 14.9 HR/FB vs RHP. Kelly projects as tonight’s fourth best arm and as a slightly better value than Valdez.

Many of the Top Projected Bats Can Be Found in One Game

The Phillies have made a habit of topping the board this week and they do so once again, starting a home series against the Pirates with weather that could potentially make the park play like Coors tonight. With 28 teams on the board, the Phillies are one of just two above five implied runs (5.76) with a bit of separation between themselves and the Mets, who could also experience some very hitter friendly weather at Citi Field tonight. Six more teams exceed four and a half run team totals. If you’ve been reading this space this week, a lot of this may sound familiar, even repetitive, but Kyle Schwarber (134 wRC+, .315 ISO vs RHP this season) is once again the top projected bat on the board. They keep on feeding him weak NL Central pitching in Philly. Bryse Wilson has good control (5.8 BB%), but has also struck out just 15% of batters with a 91.3 mph EV. His 5.74 ERA isn’t that much above estimators ranging from a 4.49 xFIP to a 5.50 xERA. LHBs have a .424 wOBA and .382 xwOBA against him this year. Oh, and by the way, some guy named Bryce Harper (174 wRC+, .311 ISO) is back tonight. It’s supposed to be kind of a big deal and projections agree. Rhys Hoskins (107 wRC+, .203 ISO) projects among the top 10 bats tonight too. RHBs “only” have a .317 wOBA and .338 xwOBA against Wilson this season.

The Angels also register a pair of top 10 projected bats. With just a 3.63 implied run line, of course you know who they are. It seems the Blue Jays are holding the leash on Mitch White tighter than even the Dodgers were. He hasn’t completed five innings or gone beyond 85 pitches in any of his three starts for them. He’s only struck out 17.7% of batters faced with a 7.7 SwStr% in a starting role, while not standing out in any other key area, though he’s allowed only 5.2% Barrels/BBE. Thus, his contact inclusive estimators are closer than more neutral ones to his 3.45 ERA as a starter. Batters from either side have been between a .295 and .311 wOBA and xwOBA against him this season, but Shohei Ohtani (156 wRC+, .286 ISO) and Mike Trout (165 wRC+, .362 ISO) are likely to be facing a lot of a Toronto bullpen with a matching 3.71 FIP & SIERA over the last 30 days. Trout’s newly discovered back condition has him down to a 154 wRC+ since returning from the IL.

An early season, contact prone, BABIP wizard, a trip to the minors served as a wake-up call for Reid Detmers, as the three Tigers he struck out last time out served as the first time he’s had fewer than six strikeouts in seven starts since returning. He has a 30.4 K% over his last nine starts (23.4% on the season) and considering the improvements, this is one time that maybe we should lean towards the 3.66 ERA rather than estimators ranging from a 4.05 SIERA to a 4.21 FIP because he appears to be a much better pitcher now, even as his BAIBP regresses (.254 season, .327 last nine starts). However, he’s still a LHP facing a dangerous Toronto lineup that can stack entirely from the RH side (.311 wOBA, .322 xwOBA against Detmers this year, though that may be a bit outdated too). Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (122 wRC+, .184 ISO) and George Springer (127 wRC+, .182 ISO) are top projected bats tonight. The Blue Jays have the fourth highest team run total on the board (4.89).

This Pitcher Tops a Loaded Pitching Board

An astounding eight pitchers reach the $10K price point on FanDuel on a 14 game Tuesday night slate. A bit of elementary school math puts that at more than one-quarter of the board. Three of those pitchers reach $10K on DraftKings. Shohei Ohtani struck out just seven of 25 A’s in his last start, snapping a streak of six straight with double digit strikeouts. He also failed to complete six innings for only the third time in 14 starts. Maybe they have his number. It was only the fifth time he’s allowed more than two runs this season (although only two were earned). Ohtani’s been fantastic. His K-BB exceeds 30% and his 2.83 ERA is at least a quarter of a run above all estimators, while the A’s have a 76 wRC+ (7.5 HR/FB) at home and 79 wRC+ (23.8 K%) vs RHP. It took Ohtani’s consecutive double digit strikeout streak being snapped for DraftKings to finally push his price tag not only above $9K, but right through $10K as well. He’s the second most expensive DK arm, but most expensive on FanDuel. Ohtani is the top projected DraftKings pitcher and second on FanDuel, but with less than a point separating the top two spots on either site. Ohtani is also a top five projected value on either site in this tremendous matchup. Which other pitchers project in line with Ohtani on a loaded pitching board tonight? Check out Tuesday’s PlateIQ Live Blog to find out.

The Only Offense Currently with a Double Digit Smash%

As somewhat expected with no offensive separation on a 13 game slate without a single team above five and a half implied runs and three essentially tied at the top with 5.3 run team totals, no stack is expected to be extremely popular tonight. The Red Sox, Pirates and Angels (two of the teams tied at the top of the board and the other with some of the top value bats on the board) are all currently projected to barely reach double digit stack ownership on DraftKings (although this is a fluid situation, which is subject to change), while no single stack currently projects for double digit FanDuel ownership. The Angels are the smash simulation winners today and the only team projected in double digits, but barely more than one percentage point ahead of the Red Sox. It’s already been expressed that the Pittsburgh lineup should contain a lot of value against Matt Swarmer’s 10 home runs allowed to just 88 batters. Their value projection is more than twice any other stack on DraftKings currently. The A’s actually own the top Value% on FanDuel with the Pirates the only other stack in double digits. This actually creates a dynamic where the two highest rated stacks have implied run lines less than four and a half. For much more on this, check out today’s PlateIQ Live Blog.

Couple of Rookie Pitchers Expected to Struggle Against Top Bats

Friday night’s now just 11 game slate includes just a single team (Houston Astros) above five implied runs with just two more above (Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks) exceeding four and a half. Houston (5.07) could have their way with a young Detroit pitcher. Beau Brieske was not a name ever mentioned when talking about the pitching future of the Tigers, but a few injuries and here we are. A 4.3 SwStr% and three home runs on five barrels (16.7%) over two starts won’t do much to make people remember him either. He’s also only thrown 64 innings above A ball, but has just a 40+ Future Value grade via Fangraphs. The Red Sox (4.8) have just a 79 wRC+ vs RHP and Vince Velasquez has looked respectable at points this season, though still has major contact profile issues (92.1 mph EV, 15.1% Barrels/BBE, 6.23 xERA). The Diamondbacks (4.59) are a bit surprising. They have just a 60 wRC+ at home and Chad Kuhl is running estimators between a 2.90 xERA and 4.02 SIERA with a 13+ SwStr%.

While all three teams feature players among the top 10 projected batters (PlateIQ) tonight, the Astros are the only one of the three teams to feature multiple batters and one of just two teams overall to do so, although a couple of Red Sox just miss. Brieske has shown a massive reverse split in his abbreviated major league work. This includes over a 200 point wOBA split and nearly 200 point xwOBA one as well with RHBs above .400 in each case. No Astros actually appear with top five overall projected point totals currently, but Jose Altuve (132 wRC+, .217 ISO vs RHP since 2021), Yordan Alvarez (149 wRC+, .285 ISO) and Alex Bregman (116 wRC+, .167 ISO) are all top 10.

Rafael Devers (148 wRC+, .318 ISO) currently projects as a top three bat tonight, but is not joined by any other Red Sox inside the top 10, though J.D. Martinez (138 wRC+, .248 ISO) and Xander Bogaerts (142 wRC+, .207 ISO) sit just outside of it. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Velasquez since last season. You can probably guess that Shohei Ohtani (144 wRC+, .289 ISO) and Mike Trout (219 wRC+, .387 ISO) are top three projected batters against Joan Adon. We don’t yet have a team run total for the Angels, as they have yet to name a pitcher, but it shouldn’t be a surprise if they end up as a fourth team above four and a half. Adon has some interesting movement on his pitches, but struggles to throw them in the strike zone. Often falling behind, batters are chasing just a quarter of his pitches out of the zone, leading to a 6.9 SwStr% and 7.2 K-BB%. When batters do swing, they’re hitting it really hard too (91 mph EV, 17.6% Barrels/BBE). He has a 7.33 ERA and we can still say he’s fortunate that just four of 13 barrels have left the yard. His xERA is a half run higher. LHBs are above a .400 wOBA and xwOBA against him, while RHBs own a .351 xwOBA.

Large Price Differentials Make For Great Pitching Value on DK

The FanDuel slate starts a half hour earlier tonight and includes two more games than DraftKings for a total eight. Fanduel also offers three pitchers exceeding $10K tonight, all also available much cheaper on DraftKings. Several more pitchers reach the $9K mark on either site, but some of them are just silly. The most expensive pitcher on the slate is Shohei Ohtani ($10.8K), who started the season by striking out nine of 19 Astros with a 15 SwStr%. He walked just one. If Ohtani isn’t walking batters, he’s been great with a 3.51 SIERA being his worst estimator since the start of last season. While the Texas lineup did make major additions this off-season, they still offer an easier matchup than Houston. Ohtani is a tremendous value on DK for less than $8K. In fact, he has the second highest overall point total projection tonight (PlateIQ) and is currently the top point per dollar value on DK.

Walker Buehler ($10.5K) is the top projected pitcher overall and the most expensive on DK ($9.7K). He struck out five of 22 at Coors with two walks and a 53.5 GB% first time out. Buehler’s strikeout rate (26%) and K-BB% (19.6) declined for the second straight year last year, while his 2.47 ERA was well below estimators in the mid-threes due to a .247 BABIP and 80.9 LOB%. That he has a career .261 BABIP now means that he may have some talent at keeping it suppressed, though he also plays in front of an effective defense. Considering that he’s never been near the top of the SwStr% board either, we should probably expect him to remain more above average than elite in that category too. Buehler does pitch deep into games though and that may be where the real value lies here. He recorded seventh inning outs in more than half his starts last year. He should be a fine choice at home against a Cincinnati team that has the lowest wRC+ on the board (66) for the 2022 season so far.

Joe Musgrove ($10.3K) has been great since the trade to San Diego with a 20.4 K-BB% and estimators that are above his 3.17 ERA, but all below four. He struck out eight of 22 Diamondbacks (13.5 SwStr%) with just a single walk his first time out. The Braves are the toughest matchup of the three here, but Musgrove costs just $7.6K on DK, projecting as the second best value on the board. Charlie Morton is the only other pitcher to reach $9K on both sites. He excelled in his return to Atlanta last season (28.6 K%, 4.9% Barrels/BBE) with a 3.53 SIERA being his worst estimator, but his post-season ended almost immediately with a broken leg. He struck out five of 19 Reds with an 85.1 mph EV and no barrels allowed in his first start of the year, but had just a 7.7 SwStr% with four ground balls. His velocity was also down about a mile per hour from last year. San Diego is a park upgrade, but there are several pitchers projected ahead of him tonight, while he’s expected to be marginally popular.

Kevin Gausman struck out five of the 22 Rangers he faced with no walks in his first start for the Blue Jays, but the real story was a 20 SwStr% without a single barrel allowed. Gausman has had estimators in the mid to low threes in each of the last two years now and while he did allow three runs in five innings, he gave his new team no reason to expect something less. Gausman projects as a top five pitcher on either site, despite a tough matchup at Yankee Stadium. Kyle Gibson struck out 10 A’s to start the season, which has spiked his price tag to $9.8K in Miami. He’s only available on FD tonight. He’s opposed by Sandy Alcantara, who walked five of the 21 Giants he faced on opening day with just a 4.8 SwStr%. The Marlins are hoping to see him continue his breakout from last season (18.0 K-BB%, 53.3 GB%). Since last year, Alcantara has allowed just a .270 xwOBA at home, which is best on the board today. He also had just 6% walk and barrel rates last year. One poor start against a great team is nothing to worry about yet. Somehow, Reiver Sanmartin costs more than Gausman, Ohtani and Musgrove on DraftKings tonight.

Top Bat and Low Priced Lineup in a Smash Spot

There are only two bullpens in the majors with three estimators (FIP, xFIP, SIERA) all above five over the last month and both teams are starting well below average pitchers. In the case of Washington (5.98, 5.93, 5.35), Erick Fedde has a 7.20 ERA over his last 10 starts with just an 8.9 K-BB% and 8.3% Barrels/BBE (90.8 mph EV). He does have a 3.91 DRA this season, but no other estimator below 4.20. LHBs have a .348 wOBA and .343 xwOBA against Fedde this year. Yet, despite all this, their opponents have merely a 4.25 implied run line. That’s because the Nationals are facing the Marlins in Miami with a projected lineup including just two LHBs (Jazz Chisholm 103 wRC+ vs RHP & Jesus Sanchez 96 wRC+). However, Sanchez costs just $2.3K on FanDuel and is projected to hit cleanup.

A more smash worthy spot is in Baltimore (5.94, 5.50, 5.05), Spenser Watkins has thrown 40 major league innings with a 14 K% (7.6 SwStr%), 36.3 GB% and 90.1 mph EV, resulting in a 5.63 ERA that’s within half a run of all his estimators. Watkins has shown a reverse split (.381 wOBA, .394 xwOBA) and will likely be facing a predominantly RH lineup, but LHBs have hit him well too (.327 wOBA, .329 xwOBA). The entire lineup is playable in this spot, but Shohei Ohtani (173 wRC+, .367 ISO vs RHP this year) is easily the top bat on this slate outside Fenway, as the Angels have the second highest team total on the board (5.55), behind only the Red Sox (6.07). The ridiculous thing is that Ohtani is the only batter in the Los Angeles projected lineup who costs more than $3K on FanDuel, giving the entire lineup tremendous value in this spot.

Home Run Prone Pitcher & One with Large Splits Makes for an Interesting Game Stack

The game total is a marginal 9.5 in Detroit with neither team above five implied runs, but this is a really interesting spot for bats due to the two pitchers involved. Dylan Bundy has just a 21.1 K%, 10.5% Barrels/BBE and 19.4 HR/FB this year, as batters from either side of the plate exceed a .325 wOBA and xwOBA against him. The projected Detroit lineup only has two batters above a 100 wRC+ vs RHP this year and just two more above a .200 ISO, but Robbie Grossman (107 wRC+ .167 ISO), Jeimer Candelario (117 wRC+, .152 ISO) and Renato Nunez (92 wRC+, .314 ISO) are all less than $4K on DraftKings tonight, while Eric Haase (85 wRC+, .218 ISO) costs $3.3K on FanDuel. All four are above a 110 wRC+ over the last 30 days overall.

The other side of this matchup features a possibly tiring young arm with a large platoon split. Casey Mize’s strikeout rate has dropped below 20% (19.2%), while his ground ball rate has dropped below 50% (49.7%), but perhaps most concerning of all is that he had a sizeable velocity dip in his last start. It makes sense as he’s now thrown more innings than he has in any professional season yet. The gap is fairly wide between his ERA (3.66) and his best estimator (4.36 xFIP) and even wider between LHBs (.365 wOBA, .380 xwOBA) and RHBs (.276 wOBA, .314 xwOBA). The Los Angeles lineup doesn’t feature many LHBs, but Shohei Ohtani (173 wRC+, .375 ISO) may be one of the top bats on the board with Jared Walsh (157 wRC+, .260 ISO) not too far behind.
