Travis Shaw Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Travis Shaw scratched Tuesday; Jonathan Davis replaces in the 9th spot
Shaw has been scratched from Tuesday's lineup and will be replaced in the 9th spot in the batting order by Jonathan Davis. This doesn't move the needle much but it does remove a potential HR threat from the lineup in exchange for a more light hitting Davis.
Cheap bat with some pop
We don't have a huge sample size for Mazza in the majors, but judging from his minor league numbers he doesn't seem like a guy that is going to be a good big league pitcher. Additionally, he really doesn't have an out pitch against lefties which plays in perfectly for Shaw. Shaw Hasn't been great since the beginning of last season, but Mazza really isn't the type of pitcher that is going to strike out lefties at a high rate. Shaw has a lot of power which is evident by his 57.1% hard hit rate against righties this season and his big problem is striking out which Mazza really isn't projected to be great at vs lefties. He's priced way too low on both sites and is likely batting 3rd in the lineup.
Top Offense to Target
Milwaukee is clearly Monday's top offense to target in a favorable road matchup against Robert Dugger. Dugger struggled significantly when promoted to AAA this season and is unlikely to be able to piece together a strong start against the high powered Brewers offense. Even with Moustakas likely out of the lineup the Brewers still have a ton of capable bats with five hitters in their projected lineup owning ISO's of .226 or higher against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons.
Brewers in great spot at home vs. Desclafani
Anthony Desclafani’s numbers don’t appear terrible on the surface; he has a 4.22 EA, 4.55 xFIP and 4.41 SIERA with a 15.3% K-BB and 10.2% SwStr. He does however have a 43.3% hard contact rate allowed, 41.1% FB rate, and a .328 xwOBA with an 88.7 MPH aEV. Over the past 30 days, Desclafani has struggled a bit with a 4.90 SIERA and 9.3% K-BB. Desclafani is much more vulnerable against left handed bats, as he has allowed just a .268 xwOBA vs. lefties compared to an ugly .368 xwOBA to righties since 2017. The Brewers will attack him with 6 LHB in the order that are all in play today: Christian Yelich (.442 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Mike Moustakas (.367), Yasmani Grandal (.348), Ben Gamel (.313), Eric Thames (.312) and Travis Shaw (.311). Ryan Braun (.340) and Orlando Arcia (.278) are righties but also in play. Grandal is especially intriguing given that he will leadoff this afternoon. Shaw has just a $2.7k price on Draftkings due to his slow start to the year and is a great value. Mike Moustakas has been the Brewers hottest hitter with a .454 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Christian Yelich at .436. The Brewers have a 5.25 implied line vs. Desclafani and the Reds this afternoon.
Brewers have highest implied total on the board tonight
The Brewers have a juicy matchup tonight versus Rookie Davis in Miller Park and currently have a 6.11 implied line. Davis has a 7.96 ERA / 5.20 xFIP with a 7.1 K-BB% and 2.56 (!) HR/9 over 31 2/3 career innings. Most projection systems have him as a roughly 5.50 ERA pitcher going forward. Davis will also have to contend with a very hitter-friendly umpire tonight in Sam Holbrook. Christian Yelich (.444 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Mike Moustakas (.357), Eric Thames (.331), Ryan Braun (.328), Yasmani Grandal (.326) and Lorenzo Cain (.317) are in the top-6 of the Brewers’ order and are all good options tonight. Orland Arcia has actually been the Brewers’ hottest hitter with a .414 xwOBA over the past 10 days and is available for just $3.9k on Draftkings. Travis Shaw is also a great value towards the bottom of the order at just $2.7k. Yelich’s price has risen to $6k now on Draftkings but he might be well worth with arguably the highest ceiling of any hitter tonight.
Cheap Exposure to Top Offense
Yes, I know Travis Shaw has been miserable offensively this season but this is all about context for the Brewers' third basemen. Milwaukee has the highest implied run total on the slate by a wide margin as they'll host Rookie Davis and the Pirates. Shaw will not only have the platoon advantage against Davis but is unlikely to see a lefty all game as the only two southpaws in the Pirates bullpen each were used in yesterday's game. Shaw has hit RHP for power his entire career with a .225 ISO and is a great way to get some cheap exposure to the top offense on the slate.
Your team, your call
I completely understand if you have given up on Travis Shaw. This is really a case of knowing what kind of DFS player you are. We all have different opinions on hot and cold streaks vs long term numbers. If you don't want to play a batter with a .174 batting average like Shaw, you don't have to. I get it. For me, I am still playing the long term numbers combined with the still strong batted ball data on Shaw at this salary. This bad season for Shaw has still come with 43% fly balls and 41% hard hits against righties with the big issue being strikeouts. Well, tonight he faces a pitcher in Sandy Alcantara who has the 2nd lowest strikeout rate of all major league starters against left-handed batters at just 11.6%. I'll be taking the Shaw discount, you get to decide your own opinion on it.
The Price Is The Reason
Alberto has been one of my favorite value plays against left-handed pitching, and he draws an excellent matchup tonight against Smyly. Smyly has a .375 wOBA with a .234 ISO and a 50.5% hard-hit rate against right-handed hitters this season. Alberto doesn't have a ton of power, but he's shown elite contact skills against lefties this season. He has a .414 wOBA with a 15.6% strikeout rate and a 1.6% walk rate against lefties in 2019.
Strong Offense Feasts On Right-Handed Pitchers
Jack Flaherty is an excellent young pitcher with a 2.93 ERA (3.57 SIERA) this season, but tonight he faces a dangerous Brewers offense, particularly against right-handed pitchers. Milwaukee ranks 3rd in OPS against right-handed pitching this season, and with left-handed hitters like Christian Yelich, Mike Moustakas, and Travis Shaw hitting in the middle of the lineup they could put up a big number against Flaherty tonight in their home ballpark.
Lefty Power
Dakota Hudson currently projects as a below average Big League pitcher and he's going to have his hands full with a potent Brewers offense at hitter friendly Miller Park. Milwaukee teed off on Hudson for three HR's in 4.1 IP the first time these teams met earlier this season and this sets up as a strong power spot for Brewers lefties. During his short MLB career, Hudson has struggled containing LHB, allowing a .427 wOBA, 19.8 BB%, 1.80 HR/9, 44 Hard% and 5.84 xFIP.
