Trevor Story Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Mile High Upside
On the Rockies' current homestand, none of the first seven games have featured more than 12 runs. None have gone over the listed Vegas total. Expect that to change tonight with two underwhelming pitchers on the mound, but will GPP ownership be lower than normal as a result of the recent duds at Coors? If so, this is a great night to load up in tournaments. If not, I'll still be loading up. The Colorado bats are a bit cheaper and check in as the slightly better stack for me against this hybrid Alex Wood / bullpen game, but you really can't go wrong with exposure to this game.
Trevor Story is the Rockies' best RHB (91 mph EV, 10.4% Barrels/BBE)
Griffin Canning has taken all eight of his turns in the rotation, but something just doesn’t appear to be right. His velocity has been down over a mile per hour from last season, his strikeout rate is down 4.8 points and his swinging strike rate is down exactly four points with a 1.1 point increase in walk rate. He’s already allowed 13 Barrels this year after allowing just 15 in more than twice as many innings last year. As a result, even a 4.54 ERA is at least 40 points below all of his estimators with a 4.94 SIERA the only one below five. The Rockies do have a 15.7 K-BB% and 74 wRC+ against RHP, but Coors essentially makes them an average offense. That makes this a matchup of an average offense against a struggling pitcher. Interestingly, Canning has a reverse split for his career. Batters from either side of the plate are above a .190 ISO against him, but RHBs have a 21 point wOBA advantage (.337). You can debate who the better RH hitter is for the Rockies: Trevor Story (.376 wOBA, .258 ISO vs RHP since 2019) or Nolan Arenado (.374 wOBA, .250 ISO). What isn’t up for debate is that Story is making much better contact this season. He has 91 mph EV and 10.4% Barrels/BBE this year to Arenado’s 87.7 mph EV and 6.2% Barrels/BBE. Trevor Story is the Colorado bat you want in your lineup tonight.
Batters from either side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA & .230 ISO vs Garrett Richards
Garrett Richards started his season well enough, but has struck out just 13 of his last 93 batters with 10 walks and 14 runs in 20.2 innings. This includes an 88.8 mph average exit velocity and 8.6% Barrels/BBE. He hasn’t exceeded an 8.8 SwStr% in any of these five starts. On the season, his 5.17 ERA is perfectly matched with a 5.17 SIERA and 5.16 xERA. Coors is not going to help any of this. Since his return last season, batters from either side of the plate are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Richards. Batters from either side are also above a .230 ISO. Trevor Story has been the top Colorado bat in August (139 wRC+) and the only Rockie in the projected lineup above a 90 mph exit velocity this season (91.5 mph). Since last season, he has a .382 wOBA and .262 ISO against RHP. Story is the most expensive bat in the Colorado lineup on FanDuel ($4.5K), but also one daily fantasy players certainly want to roster tonight.
One of the Top Plays
Any time Story is facing a left-handed pitcher in Coors, you have to give him strong consideration. Tonight he gets to face left-handed pitcher, Adrian Morejon who is a 21 year old pitcher with very little MLB experience pitching in Coors Field. He and his teammate Nolan Arenado are two of the best plays on the slate.
Elite Potential Against A Low Strikeout Pitcher
The Colorado bats are the easy targets in the Saturday matchup. They face off against Kyle Gibson, who has been the definition of an average MLB arm for several years. He has a career 18% strikeout rate (quite low) and a career 8% walk rate (quite high). He has allowed hard contact at a 33% clip for his career and at a 47% clip this year. These trends are not good when your next start comes in Denver. Gibson is relatively splits neutral, so just target the elite hitters here. Charlie Blackmon is hitting well over .400 so far this season and represents a fine target in all formats. Everyone knows the power that Arenado and Story bring to the table. For now, I’ve marked Story as a core play, as I like the way he lines up against a low strikeout pitcher. He has great safety and upside tonight.
Trevor Story (137 wRC+, .269 ISO vs LHP since 2019) potential top bat on the board
Robbie Ray has increased his velocity over a mile and a half per hour, back to pre-2019 levels, but it hasn’t helped him a single bit. Ray has always had elite strikeout upside with control issues and the tendency to get hit hard when contact is made. In three starts, he has struck out 17 of 66 batters with just an 11.7 SwStr%, while walking 11 and allowing six HRs. While even he is unlikely to sustain a 24 HR/FB, a 43.8 Z-O-Swing% is worst on the board and it suggests batters aren’t being fooled. His 18.4% Barrels/BBE is easily the highest mark on the board and more than 50% of his contact has been above a 95 mile per hour exit velocity. The Colorado offense is propped up by the park, but they have an 18.7 HR/FB in a few games at home this year and haven’t been striking out much recently (21.6% last seven days). Ray has a significant platoon issue and Statcast confirms this with RHBs owning both a .344 wOBA & xwOBA against him since last season. Trevor Story may be the top overall bat on the board on Monday and certainly worth paying up for. His numbers against LHP since 2019 (137 wRC+, .269 ISO) are very comparable to Nolan Arenado and he more than doubles the latter’s 57 wRC+ this year with a 132 wRC+ and 51% hard hit rate overall.
It's Obvious For A Reason
On FD tonight, the pricing is close enough between the Rockies and Diamondbacks that you can go with whichever side you prefer. With Robbie Ray on the mound for Arizona, I will put Nolan Arenado ahead of Trevor Story on my wish list, but both Rockies righties are top of the line plays here. Both Arenado and Story have home run upside against the hard hits and fly balls from Ray, both belong in Colorado stacks from the middle of the order, and in cash games, there's even more a floor with Ray's high walk rate giving them on-base opportunities even if they aren't hitting home runs.
Contrarian Play
No one likes to play the Colorado team outside of Coors, but Trevor Story and Nolen Arenado are two of the best hitters against right-handed pitching in baseball. With a chance to get them at low ownership, they are deserving of a look in a contrarian Colorado stack tonight. Story has a .283 ISO and .416 wOBA versus left-handed pitching and he can certainly gain you leverage on the field in tournaments tonight.
Fill The Tough Position
I've switched the Core Tags around this afternoon after lineups have come out and left us with a lack of options at shortstop. Neither Gleyber Torres or Jorge Polanco are playing tonight, leaving Trevor Story all alone at the top of the shortstop ranks. If positions didn't matter, I'd prefer a couple other Coors Field bats in the outfield, but with this player pool, I am focusing on the shortstop.
Chalky Or Not, I Want Some
I am really intrigued to see where ownership falls on Monday's slate. Upon first glance I was sure that Rockies would be extremely chalky but I am hearing an awful lot of Twins buzz which makes me think they could soak up some of Colorado's ownership. I would gladly welcome any sort of ownership discount on a Rockies stack as they currently have a monster 7.1 implied run total and should have no problem teeing off on Johnny Cueto and the Giants bullpen. Cueto has unsurprisingly struggled to start the season and is pretty clearly someone we want to target aggressively at this stage of his career.
