SFO RB Trey Sermon activated to 53-man roster from IR

Trey Sermon has been activated to 53-man roster from IR ahead of the 49ers matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. San Francisco was forced to make this move today or Sermon would have been ineligible to play the rest of the season. Sermon is not expected to play a major role in the 49ers offense and will likely be a candidate to be a healthy scratch come game day. The San Francisco backfield will be led by Elijah Mitchell with Deebo Samuel, Jeff Wilson, and JaMycal Hasty all mixing in. Mitchell can be considered in most formats but Samuel's continued usage as a running back has cut into Mitchell's touchdown equity.

Deebo Samuel and Trey Sermon have officially been listed out for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Samuel is expected to miss a week or two meaning Brandon Aiyuk should be the top receiver for the 49ers and will likely see a few more targets increasing his expected production. Eli Mitchell should remain the top back in the backfield with Jeff Wilson and the returning JaMycal Hasty available to back him up. Mitchell will remain a good DFS option especially in a matchup where San Francisco figures to be playing with a lead.

Deebo Samuel and Trey Sermon both logged DNPs Wednesday while JaMycal Hasty returned to practice ahead of the 49ers matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. As expected, Elijah Mitchell, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Jeff Wilson all active Sunday againt the Arizona Cardinals while Trey Sermon has been listed inactive. Samuel is expected to continue in his role as the top receiver for the 49ers and should see a heavy workload, though if he were to be limited Brandon Aiyuk could take over this role and merits consideration in tournament lineups. Elijah Mitchell is expected to continue to lead the backfield but with the return of Jeff Wilson, will likely see his role diminish some. With both Wilson and Hasty back the 49ers backfield could become a committee making all members less appealing. It is unsurprising that Sermon is the odd man out and will be inactive. The returning Kittle will instantly slot back in as the top tight end for San Francisco sending Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley back down the depth chart, though he is expected to be limited today and only play about half of the snaps.

SFO RB Elijah Mitchell listed doubtful, RB Trey Sermon cleared to play Sunday

Elijah Mitchell has officially been listed as doubtful and Trey Sermon has been cleared to play Sunday after going through the concussion protocol. Coach Shanahan stated that rarely players are upgraded from doubtful on Friday to available on Sunday but this could be an exception because of the time that the backup running backs have spent on the team. He is speaking about Trenton Cannon (signed last week), Kerryon Johnson (signed last week), and Jacques Patrick (signed this week). Trey Sermon will likely serve as the top running back if Mitchell is unable to go and will likely be one of the top value options on the showdown slate due to his expected workload. Right now it's anybody's guess as to how the rest of the 49ers backfield shakes out, it will be important to see who is elevated from the practice squad and active Sunday night.

Elijah Mitchell is "very questionable" for Sunday and it "looks like Trey Sermon is going to get his opportunity" according to GM John Lynch who spoke on a radio show Friday morning. If Elijah Mitchell is unable to suit up Sunday night against the Packers it sounds like Trey Sermon (if he clears concussion protocol) will be the lead back with Trenton Cannon, Jacques Patrick, and possibly even Kerryon Johnson splitting the rest of the time in the backfield. Sermon would instantly become one of the better plays on the showdown slate due to expected volume if Mitchell were to be ruled out.
