Tyler Flowers Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Cheap 3-Man Power Stack In Scarce Positions

Typically, I wouldn't necessarily target bats against Corbin, but since tonight is a smaller 7-game slate with less options, the power righties could be in play for GPPs. The Braves lineup has four that fit the bill priced under $4k on DraftKings, two of which in Flowers & Albies that fill scarce positions (C/2B) in a lineup. A full 5-man Braves stack isn't completely out of the question, but I'm more inclined to use them as a 2-3-man that allows you access to the more expensive bats in Coors tonight.

RHBs had a .363 wOBA with 22 HRs against Andrew Suarez last year

Andrew Suarez gets his first start of the season. His 8.9 K-BB% six AAA starts is even less inspiring than his 7.3 SwStr% and 40 Hard% in 160.1 major league innings last season. Despite being implied for just 3.99 runs in a difficult park, there might be a leveraging opportunity (SlateIQ is available to premium subscribers) in considering some Atlanta bats in this spot. RHBs had a .363 wOBA and hit 22 HRs against Saurez last year and 10 of those came at home. Ronald Acuna Jr. (172 wRC+, .328 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Josh Donaldson (141 wRC+, .216 ISO) are firmly in play here, as is Tyler Flowers (132 wRC+, .198 ISO) at a reasonable price at a tough position. Also consider Austin Riley, who’s set the league on fire through his first week (221 wRC+, 53.9 Hard%). San Francisco is never an ideal spot to look for offense on night slates, but it will help players differentiate somewhat tonight.

Value bat behind the plate mashes LH pitching

While Steven Matz absolutely grounds LHBs with a 71.4 GB% over the last calendar year, the surprising thing is that he’s held RHBs to a .313 wOBA over the last calendar year, supported entirely by his xwOBA (.312) as well. However, this does come with a 38.5 Hard% and much lower 42.8 GB%. Catcher has become a difficult position to fill in a DFS lineup the last few years, so when one stands out, we have to take notice, no matter where he’s hitting in the order and that appears to be the case with Tyler Flowers tonight. Flowers has a 193 wRC+, .246 ISO and 45.8 Hard% vs southpaws over the last year, all best or second best in this lineup. Overall this season, Flowers is averaging a 96.1 mph aEV so far. All of these numbers are small samples, but we’ll take what we can get behind the plate. The Braves currently have a 4.71 implied run line, exceeded only by the Red Sox, so he may see a few opportunities to drive runners in and costs $3.5K or less on either site.

Pitching tactics could backfire against pair who hits same-handed pitching well

Diego Castillo will start for the Rays, but he hasn't faced more than 10 batters in an outing this year. Jalen Beeks is scheduled to work the bulk of the game and the Braves are actually more proficient against LHP. RHBs have a 51.2 GB% and just a 24.4 Hard% against Beeks this season, but a 3.5 K-BB% gives them a .357 wOBA (xwOBA is .333). It's actually LHBs that have a 52.4 Hard% and 33.3 GB% against Beeks with an xwOBA 147 points higher than actual against him. Considering Freddie Freeman (157 wRC+, .250 ISO) and Nick Markakis (124 wRC+, .166 ISO) have hit LHP well this season, they would seem to have an advantage no matter which pitcher they face, as would Ronald Acuna (144 wRC+, .279 ISO). Tyler Flowers (244 wRC+, .271 ISO) may also be worth a look if he may potentially get multiple looks at a southpaw.

High priced lineup, but with a great bargain behind the plate

Wei-Yin Chen has been very good against LHBs since last season (.244 wOBA, .280 xwOBA) with a 47.9 GB% well above that against RHBs. Still, two of the first four batters in the order for Atlanta are LHBs against because both Freddie Freeman (155 wRC+, .249 ISO) and Nick Markakis (137 wRC+, .197 ISO) have been very good against LHP over the last calendar year. The Braves have a team total of 4.99 runs tonight, good for the second best mark on the board right now, but can players really consider Ronald Acuna (71 wRC+, 131 ISO, .295 xwOBA) at an expensive cost out of the leadoff spot here? Meanwhile, Ozzie Albies (134 wRC+, .216 ISO) costs even more and has a 21 wRC+ with a 38.5 K% over the last seven days in which he's one of just two players in the majors with more at least 10 PAs and no hard hit balls. Tyler Flowers (209 wRC+, .218 ISO) is the bargain here and likely a must for those who want exposure to this lineup. Another consideration, is that high priced Atlanta bats will be facing a struggling Miami bullpen behind a pitcher averaging less than five innings per start.

Catch A Homer

The catcher position is one of the better places to find good values tonight on DK. Hitting is priced up overall, but you can find power in good matchups in the low-mid tier behind the mask. In 54 PA against lefties this season, Tyler Flowers has a huge 58% hard hit rate and a .263 ISO. That is probably still a lot of sample size fluke, but even last season when he wasn't hitting the ball with such authority, he had elite plate discipline with more walks than strikeouts which kept him relevant with a .433 OBP against lefties. Wei-Yin Chen has low strikeouts, high walks and no ground ball ability against right-handed batters, giving Flowers on base and power upside.

How many left-mashing Catchers can the Braves fit in the lineup in an AL park?

The Braves have found a way to smuggle both of their lefty-mashing Catchers into the lineup by adding the DH tonight. Unfortunately, you can only play both Kurt Suzuki (180 wRC+, .402 xwOBA, .345 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Tyler Flowers (197 wRC+, ,473 xwOBA, .229 ISO) on FanDuel. On DraftKings, you'll have to pick one or the other. RHBs are within six points of a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against Jaime Garcia since last season. Ozzie Albies (141 wRC+, .239 ISO) is a top second base play. Freddie Freeman hits same-handed pitching extremely well (157 wRC+, .263 ISO) and has a 214 wRC+ (61.5 Hard%) over the last week. Unfortunately, Johan Camargo (144 wRC+, .368 xwOBA, .270 ISO) bats ninth.

Tyson Ross has struggled against weak lineups recently, faces a few bats who hit sliders well

Tyson Ross is one of the better pitchers on tonight's four game slate, but he has faltered as of late (15.2 IP - 9 R - 2 HR - 5 BB - 14 K - 47 BF) against the Marlins (twice) and Reds. Batters from either side of the plate are going to get either a four-seam fastball or slider over 90% of the time. This would be a good time to see what PlateIQ says. Each of the first five batters are above a .350 wOBA against the four-seamer since 2016. Freddie Freeman has a .452 wOBA against the pitch and a strong 64.88 IQ Rating overall that's eighth best on the board tonight (available to premium subscribers). Freeman, Ozzie Albies and Tyler Flowers are the only three batters in the lineup with at least a .390 wOBA against four-seam fastballs and also the only ones above a .320 wOBA against sliders since 2016. Even with his early season rejuvenation, Ross has an extreme split this season (LHBs .364 wOBA, RHBs .227 wOBA), though the only real difference is in 10 points of K-BB%. Batters from either side have around a league average ground ball rate and 40% hard hit rate. Albies (100 wRC+, .201 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Freeman (146 wRC+, .223 ISO) are obviously stronger plays than Flowers (81 wRC+, .177 ISO).

Braves have one of the highest run lines (4.78) outside Coors against Steven Matz and a tired Mets bullpen

The Atlanta Braves are near the top of the board outside Coors with a 4.78 implied run line against Steven Matz and a tired Mets bullpen after last night's double-header. RHBs have a .357 wOBA against Matz since last season, while he's averaged less than five innings per start this year. While Ozzie Albies (174 wRC+, .276 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) may be the top bat in the lineup here, Johan Camargo (152 wRC+, .247 ISO) and Tyler Flowers (177 wRC+, .197 ISO) come at a much lower price. Freddie Freeman (149 wRC+, .243 ISO) hits same-handed pitching better than well and the Mets have just one lefty (Blevins) in the bullpen.

Atlanta lineup includes three batters with a 180 or better wRC+ against LHP over last calendar year

Eduardo Rodriguez has a 28.2 K% and costs less than $8K, but is a difficult roster against an Altanta lineup that is tough on left-handed pitching (129 wRC+, 17.1 K%), especially in an extremely positive run environment like Fenway. Part of the reason Rodriguez's 4.13 ERA is above his estimators is an 89.7 mph aEV. While he has a bit of a reverse split (LHBs .327 wOBA, RHBs .308), there are a number of interesting options in the Atlanta lineup tonight from either side of the plate, two of them (both Catchers), fairly cheap. Freddie Freeman (147 wRC+, .253 ISO vs LHP last calendar year) and Ozzie Albies (187 wRC+, .302 ISO) are the expensive options. Kurt Suzuki (188 wRC+, .356 ISO) and Tyler Flowers (180 wRC+, .158 ISO) have both punished LHP over the last calendar year, each with an xwOBA above .400 to support efforts. The sample sizes aren't massive, but Braves will likely receive little consideration against a decent pitcher with a middling 4.36 implied run line tonight.
