Wilmer Difo Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Bryce Harper only LHB Sean Newcomb will face tonight, Anthony Rendon (184 wRC+ vs LHP) bats second
Sean Newcomb didn't have a major platoon split issue last season (RHBs .337 wOBA, 23.2 K% - LHBs .330 wOBA, 24.8 K%) with a 43% ground ball rate and sub-30 Hard% against batters from either side. Where he did really struggle was in a 13.8 BB% against RHBs. The Washington Nationals are doing him no favors tonight, stacking eight RHBs (including the pitcher) around Bryce Harper (108 wRC+, .133 ISO vs LHP since 2017). New manager Dave Martinez has done something that his predecessor was reluctant to and that's bat their best hitter against LHP (Anthony Rendon 184 wRC+, .343 ISO since 2017) second. This should make DFS players happy. The second best hitter against LHP (Ryan Zimmerman 162 wRC+, .323 ISO) bats cleanup. What a novel concept! Adam Eaton, one of the hottest bats in the league to start the year, sits tonight, while the Nationals offer several low priced batters, who have had some success against LHP in the lower half of the order: Howie Kendrick (137 wRC+, .189 ISO), Michael Taylor (115 wRC+, .196 ISO) and Wilmer Difo (119 wRC+, .190). If Newcomb's control issues against RHBs continue, these lower half batters may see several RBI opportunities in the early innings. An interesting note from PlateIQ is that while several Washington batters struggled against the curveball last year, they had xwOBAs much higher. Newcomb used his curveball 22.3% of pitches against RHBs last season.
Nationals post a lineup without a single major league regular against Robert Gsellman
On a dare, someone must have suggested to Dusty Baker that they could beat the Mets without the use of a single major league regular in the lineup. Only Willmer Difo, Howie Kendrick and Adam Lind, all in the top half of the lineup, have seen semi-regular at bats among a confirmed lineup with a .248 wOBA and .090 ISO vs RHP this year with a 19.7 K-BB%. The question is, does this add Robert Gsellman to the plethora of usable arms tonight. He is coming off seven shutout innings with three hits against the Braves, but struck out just three in that start. Despite a hard hit rate below 20% in three straight starts now, his velocity has been dropping and he's struck out a total of 11 batters over this span. While the matchup does make him look a lot better, this still doesn't seem ideal for players looking to maximize upside with their fantasy dollars.

Strikeouts are down, but Dallas Keuchel has a double digit SwStr% in three straight starts
Dallas Keuchel has struck out three or fewer in four of his five starts since returning from the DL. His last start in particular was a mixed bag from a batted ball perspective with an 89.5 GB%, but 40% hard hit rate. For the season, his 84 mph aEV is lowest on the slate with a 66.2 GB% that leads the league by nearly three full points among those with at least 100 innings pitched. His 9.7 SwStr% is league average since returning, even if overall strikeouts are down. In fact, he has a double digit SwStr% in four of five and three straight starts. The Nationals are missing nearly half the lineup due to injuries and have a 27.0 K% and 6.0 HR/FB over the last week. This makes Keuchel a reasonable option. The ball has been kept on the ground, if not much else, since his return with RHBs putting it on the ground more often (64.9%) than LHBs (57.1%), but with a 40.5 Hard% vs 25 Hard% for LHBs. The Nationals have somewhat of a four headed monster against LHP at the top of the lineup however. Ryan ZImmermann (153 wRC+, .333 ISO) and Anthony Rendon (183 wRC+, .329 ISO) have been punishing southpaws all season, while Howie Kendrick (173 wRC+, .272 ISO) and Wilmer Difo (171 wRC+, .216 ISO) have been making up for lost time and smaller sample sizes. Which ever side players end up on in this matchup, and good arguments can be made for both, hedging with the other side in a different lineup may be wise as well.
Anthony Rendon has a 221 wRC+, .375 ISO vs LHP; RHBs have a .376 wOBA, 38.1 Hard% vs O'Grady
Chris O'Grady has a 3.68 ERA with 22.3 K% through four starts, but that may be a bit of a fluke with just a 6.2 SwStr%, 12.8 BB% and 88.9 mph aEV. He has a ground ball rate below 30% against batters from either side, but has legitimately stifled LH contact (.219 wOBA, 22.2 Hard%). RHBs, however, have smashed him (.376 wOBA, 38.1 Hard%). The way players can take advantage of this may be with a Washington stack that omits LHBs. Does anyone ever omit Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy, who hit LHBs well, from Washington stacks? Anthony Rendon, who has smoked LHP this year (221 wRC+, .375 ISO) and Ryan Zimmerman (149 wRC+, .325 ISO vs LHP this year) are core bats with Wilmer Difo (135 wRC+, .229 ISO vs LHP) and Howie Kendrick (148 wRC+, .146 ISO) providing lower cost support (at least on FanDuel) at the top of the lineup. The Nationals have a current run projection of 4.8 runs according to the Vegas Odds page.
Washington bats, Lance McCullers project as most popular plays tonight
On an eight game slate with some interesting lineups, Washington bats appear as if they may be most popular, especially Bryce Harper and Trea Turner (projected to be somewhere around 20% on either site) as they can be combined with some lower cost bats in tonight's lineup like Adam Lind and Wilmer Difo, also projected to be in more than 10% of lineups. The other side of that matchup might be where players find some contrarian options. Joe Ross has struggled with batters from both sides of the plate this year. Jonathan Schoop moves up to bat second tonight with only 5% projected ownership on either site, while Seth Smith, Mark Trumbo and Trey Mancini are not expected to be much more popular. Lance McCullers is projected to be the most popular pitcher on the slate and he might be difficult to get away from because despite struggling in his last start, 17 of 22 batters either struck out or hit a ground ball. Other high priced pitchers have had recent struggles (Lester, Pineda). David Price is not in a great spot against the Yankees tonight, but has looked good in two starts and projects to be the lowest owned of the four. Premium subscribers can see potential ownership rates, which update until first pitch, on the Projected Ownership page.
Alternate Washington lineup projects both value and top overall bats tonight via RotoGrinders Player Projections
The two offensive stars to actually grace the Washington lineup in the rescheduled affair against the Orioles (Bryce Harper and Trea Turner) are the RotoGrinders Player Projections' top overall bats along with George Springer and Jose Altuve against Jason Hammel. While all four cost at least $5.4K on DraftKings, it may be more feasible to accumulate a few of those bats in a FanDuel lineup with each projected for at least 3.0 Pt/$/K. Several low cost Washington bats (Adam Lind, Wilmer Difo, and Stephen Drew) aid the cause with FD projections above 3.7 Pt/$/K, while a $2.1K Adam Engel projects for 2.77 Pt/$/K on DraftKings against Jake Odorizzi. Brian McCann, Evan Longoria and Aaron Altherr are all $3.6K or less on DraftKings as well with a projection above 2.3 Pt/$/K.
Alec Asher vs Washington may now offer low cost solutions to high cost pitching
Alec Asher has allowed six runs in 18.2 innings with 14 strikeouts, two walks and three HRs in starts not against the Houston Astros, but has had just a 7.4 SwStr% in each of his last two starts. A tough start in Washington (122 wRC+ at home, 112 wRC+ vs RHP) becomes a bit more interesting with Werth, Murphy, Zimmerman and Rendon out of the lineup as Asher costs just $4.7K on DraftKings. Using the new PlateIQ tool, we can see that this particular Washington lineup has just a 19.6 K% vs RHP this year with a .297 wOBA and .177 ISO. This is opposed to a 19.2 K%, .345 wOBA and 198 ISO vs RHP as an entire team this year. The real gain here is in wOBA with the small sample sizes of Wilmer Difo (.229), Drew (.148) and Goodwin (.264) bringing the current lineup's total to below .300 against RHP. Asher doesn't have to do much for less than $5K, but now this matchup offers some low cost solutions to higher priced pitchers on either side with either Asher or someone like Adam Lind (107 wRC+, .215 ISO vs RHP since 2016) as well as Drew (116 wRC+, .250 ISO vs RHP since 2016).
Joey Rickard is the top option for a cheap bat in the leadoff spot
We're still waiting on some late lineup confirmations, but we're already looking at nice cheap bats to helps supplement your expensive pitching or top bats. If unconcerned about lineup placement when considering Catcher, James McCann (136 wRC+, .310 ISO vs LHP since last season), Martin Maldonado (136 wRC+, .136 ISO vs LHP since last season) and Jett Bandy (125 wRC+, .269 ISO vs LHP career) are all extremely affordable options and above average hitters against southpaws. Ian Happ costs just $2.2K on FanDuel in the middle of the top projected offense tonight, while teammate Jeimer Candelario costs just $200 more. This is likely where most players will look to save some offensive dollars. Nich Ahmed (unconfirmed) has a 219 wRC+ over the last week and costs $2.8K on either site against Tommy Milone if players are looking to punt SS tonight, while Wilmer Difo is the minimum on FanDuel against Chad Kuhl. Your cheap Outfielders are where some of the more premium lineup spots can be found with Joey Rickard (120 wRC+, .175 ISO vs LHP career) costs less than $3K on either site, as does Adam Frazier (107 wRC+ vs RHP) in a tougher spot against Stephen Strasburg.
No shortage of quality inexpensive bats near top of lineup on Monday night
Players looking to play up for pitching or Coors bats should have plenty of cost saving opportunities elsewhere on this slate. Though not yet confirmed, Matt Joyce (121 wRC+, .210 ISO vs RHP since last season) may bat near the top of the Oakland lineup against Ricky Nolasco. He costs less than than $3K on either site, along with teammate Yonder Alonso (339 wRC+, 5 HRs last seven days) for $2.8K on DraftKings. Joey Rickard (127 wRC+, .162 ISO vs LHP career) bats leadoff against Gio Gonzalez for the minimum cost on Fanduel ($1K more on DraftKings). Andrew Toles (123 wRC+, .194 ISO vs RHP) meets that price tag on DraftKings against rookie Trevor Williams. Wilmer Flores (196 wRC+, .381 ISO vs LHP since last season) mashes lefties (Matt Moore) out of the cleanup spot tonight ($3.1K on DK, $2.3K on FD). Teammate T.J. Rivera bats second for less than $3K on either site. Tommy Pham bats further down in the order for the Cardinals, but brings players a 369 wRC+ over the last week for the minimum on FanDuel ($3K on DraftKings). Jordy Mercer (111 wRC+, .185 ISO since last season) may also now hit leadoff for less than $3K against replacement Alex Wood. Looking at below average leadoff bats on the cheap might bring you more towards Wilmer Difo ($3.1K DK, $2.3K FD) and Alcides Escobar ($3K DK, $2.2K FD).
