Yonder Alonso Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Elite Context

Things that Yonder Alonso is not: a stellar hitter. But...who cares? Context is everything for the low-priced Alonso who is expected to hit in the middle of the order for a White Sox squad traveling to hitter friendly GlobeLife Park in Arlington where they'll take on righty Ariel Jurado. The reality is that Alonso is at best an average hitter with the platoon against an at best average pitcher but the context is elite. Alonso is a fine salary relief option that can be used in all formats.

White Sox an intriguing contrarian stack option vs. struggling Paxton

Since returning from the IL on 5/29 James Paxton has made 3 starts, coming against the Padres, Blue Jays and Mets. Despite the decently easy matchups, Paxton has struggled to a 7.15 ERA / 5.96 xFIP / 5.40 SIERA with an ugly 13.5% BB rate, 39.4% hard contact rate and 54.5% FB rate. Paxton’s most recent start was his worst, giving up 6 earned runs over just 2 2/3 innings to the Mets at home. The White Sox have swung the bat well recently with a .329 xwOBA over the past 14 days as a team and are likely to be very low-owned today vs. Paxton and the Yanks. Jose Abreu (.379 xwOBA vs. LHP on the year), Yonder Alonso (.356), James McCann (.355), Eloy Jimenez (.336), Tim Anderson (.335), Leury Garcia (.311) and Yoan Moncada (.287) are all options in the projected lineup versus Paxton. Besides Moncada, all White Sox bats are priced $4.4k or less on Draftkings. Moncada has been by far their hottest hitter with a scorching .503 xwOBA over the past 14 days. The White Sox will also have the benefit of a very hitter friendly umpire in Nic Lentz.

Power + Speed

I have a confession to make: I pretty much always stack against Anibal Sanchez. Doing so has been more unsuccessful than not over the last two seasons but I've been tainted from the 2015-2018 seasons in which Sanchez owned a HR-to-fly ball ratio north of 15.5% each season. Chasing HRs is a worthy cause when stacking and this is undoubtedly a good power spot for White Sox hitters. If Kurt Suzuki draws the start behind home plate, it would also become an extremely good stolen base matchup for the Sox. The combination of power + speed matchup is good for the stack as a whole but also gives someone like Yoan Moncada, who excels in both areas, ridiculous upside.

White Sox lineup has value and upside in great matchup vs. Sparkman

Glenn Sparkman has a 3.77 ERA for the Royals this year over 31 innings, but everything in his profile suggests that number should be much higher. He’s got a 5.09 xFIP, 4.98 SIERA, 8.2% K-BB, 27% Hard-Soft and just a 7.6% SwStr. He’s also sporting a horrendous .371 xwOBA allowed and 92 MPH aEV. Over the past 30 days, Sparkman has a 5.78 xFIP, 6.37 SIERA, 3% K-BB, .425 xwOBA allowed and 93.1 MPH aEV. Yoan Moncada (.399 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Jose Abreu (.372), Wellington Castillo (.362), Tim Anderson (.353), Eloy Jimenez (.313) and Yonder Alonso (.301) are all solid options this afternoon vs. Sparkman. Leury Garcia (.273) projects to leadoff and occasionally will steal a base with 7 on the year, he also has a .339 xwOBA over the past 2 weeks. Castillo, Alonso and Jimenez are all available under $3.5k on Draftkings and project to be in the top-6 of the White Sox order. The White Sox have a 4.89 implied total vs. Sparkman and the Royals this afternoon.

White Sox in Good Spot vs. Aaron Sanchez

Aaron Sanchez has been incredibly lucky this year with a 3.21 ERA despite a 5.11 xFIP and 5.34 SIERA. Sanchez has a 5.5% K-BB, as well as an 8.3 Barrel%, 89.8 aEV and 43.3% Hard hit rate, all near the bottom of the league per Statcast. His .370 xwOBA ranks 19th worst in the league among 137 qualified starters. Sanchez has been worse vs. LHB in his career with a .356 xwOBA vs. LHB compared to a .314 xwOBA vs. RHB. Yonder Alonso (.342 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018), Yoan Moncada (.338) and Charlie Tilson (.294) all are in the middle of the order for the White Sox and are good options. Moncada is enjoying a breakout year with a .419 xwOBA vs. RHP so far. Also a LHB, Leury Garcia (.279 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018) will lead off and has run more this year with 5 steals in 2019. Jose Abreu (.365 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018) is also firmly in play despite not having the platoon advantage vs. Sanchez. The White Sox have a 4.18 implied line vs. Sanchez and the Blue Jays Sunday Afternoon.

A 95.2 mph aEV against the pitcher allowing the hardest contact on the board

Andrew Cashner has been a ground ball machine (54.2%) with just a 10.8 LD%, but a 91.6 aEV worst on the board. He’s the only pitcher on the board allowing half of his contact (50.6%) above a 95 mph EV. Of course, despite the six strikeouts last time out, he has just a 13.6 K%. He’s allowed five HRs in five starts, two in his only home start this season. The White Sox have owned a fairly healthy 18.4 HR/FB vs RHP this season. Currently, the White Sox provide the second highest implied run line on the board outside Coors tonight (5.07). While Chicago bats are priced more optimally on FanDuel, where Jose Abreu (102 wRC+, .183 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Yonder Alonso (100 wRC+, .191 ISO), and Welington Castillo (100 wRC+, .177 ISO) remain below $3K, Yoan Moncada (114 wRC+, .207 ISO) is very play worthy at a higher cost. He has been crushing the ball this season (95.2 mph aEV), which matches up nicely with Cashner's aEV, and batters from either side of the plate are above both a .340 wOBA and xwOBA against Cashner over the last 12 months.

Run It Back

The White Sox went nuts against the Orioles bullpen last night, something that is likely to be a theme all year for teams travelling to Baltimore. Tonight they start with Andrew Cashner and his low strikeouts combined with an inability to keep the ball on the ground against lefties. Along with Yoan Moncada, Yonder Alonso will be my White Sox bat of choice tonight with his 40% fly balls and 38% hard hits against right-handed pitching.

Really Like This FanDuel Price

David Hess is a fly ball pitcher that gives up a lot of hard contact and has a very low strikeout rate to both lefties and righties. This is a great spot to target the White Sox. Yonder Alonso has a .143 ISO with a .274 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season, but that doesn't tell the full story and I hope it's why he goes overlooked tonight. He has a .162 BABIP with a 38.9% hard-hit rate and a 91.6 average exit velocity against righties this season. His .454 CXwOBA suggest he has some positive regression coming his way. I really like this spot for him, and on FanDuel, I like pairing him and Abreu on the same team.

Breakout Game Incoming

I really like this KC/CWS game tonight, and while we have some really popular spots, it could fly a little under the radar. Yonder Alonso is one of my favorite plays on this slate. He has a .094 ISO with a .265 wOBA against righties this season, and while that should scare me, it doesn’t. He has a .136 BABIP and his xwOBA, xISO, and hard contact rate suggest some positive regression is coming for him. In 168 PAs against left-handed hitters since the start of 2018, Lopez has a .330 wOBA with a .205 ISO, and a very low 16.1% strikeout rate.

Elite bats return to lineup in a strong spot

After a night off for most of their regulars last night, the Indians return to their regularly scheduled lineup tonight to face James Shields in Chicago. There is some weather concern in this game, but the Tribe currently have an implied run line right around five. Despite Shields being 50 points better against LHBs by wOBA this season, xwOBA has him above .350 against batters from either side and separated by less than 10 points. The issue here is that the bats you want are very obvious. Francisco Lindor (121 wRC+, .253 ISO vs RHP this year), Michael Brantley (136 wRC+, .190 ISO), Jose Ramirez (161 wRC+, .320 ISO) and even Edwin Encarnacion (120 wRC+, .249 ISO) are so far ahead of the rest of the lineup that only Yonder Alonso (103 wRC+, .191 ISO) is even above a 100 wRC+ vs RHP among remaining hitters.
