Start of TBR-NYY will be delayed due to rain Thursday
The start of the matchup between the Tampa Bay and New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon will be delayed due to rain. There’s yet to be any confirmation of an official start time, and the Yankee have not yet committed to a specific timeline for providing further updates. The definitive late start is potentially better news for the prospects of starting pitchers like Domingo German and Yonny Chirinos not being pulled from the game early because of a mid-game stoppage, and as Kevin Roth detailed in the latest update to his MLB weather forecast, he believes that this contest will play through to conclusion following the initial delay.
Too Cheap on FanDuel
The 25 year old has been a huge surprise for the Rays this season, showing off impeccable command on his way to a 7-3 record and a 3.00 ERA. His strikeouts are slightly below league average, but I do expect some improvement on that front as he grows into his role. The swinging strikes are reasonable at over 10%, and any pitcher can succeed with a 5% walk rate. The one caution we need to have is that Chirinos has been extraordinarily lucky with a .228 opposing BABIP this year. We can certainly expect some regression, but he remains a solid pitcher for the Rays. A matchup against the Rangers adds an increased risk/reward element here, as this is a lineup that has pop but is also prone to the strikeout, especially now that Joey Gallo is back from injury. I do have interest in Chirinos tonight, especially on FanDuel where they still have him priced in the basement at $6,300.
LHBs have an xwOBA (.336) that's 84 points higher than actual against Yonny Chirinos
Yonny Chirinos threw 4.2 shutout innings at Yankee Stadium last time out, but struck out just two and his 3.26 ERA is not supported by estimators, all of which are at least a full run higher. Over the last month, he has just a 12.8 K%. This is a pitcher the Dodgers may be able to get to today and he’ll likely go through the order twice. The most interesting aspect of Chirino’s profile has been a .252 wOBA against LHBs over the last calendar year, despite a 45.6 Hard% and 37.1 GB% that pushes his xwOBA up over 80 points (.336). Tampa Bay is a negative run environment, but that’s never stopped Dodger bats. Joc Pederson (157 wRC+, .376 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Max Muncy (160 wRC+, .291 ISO) and Cody Bellinger (180 wRC+, .298 ISO) have destroyed RHP and all project to be in the top half of tonight’s lineup. Pederson and Muncy each cost less than $3.5K on FanDuel too.
Aaron Hicks (133 wRC+, .204 ISO vs RHP last 12 months) is in a great spot against Yonny Chirinos (LHBs .344 xwOBA) at home
Yonny Chirinos struck out just two of the 17 Yankees he faced in his last outing and his strikeout rate is down to just 15.7% over the last month. He’s expected to pitch the bulk of the game behind tonight’s opener (Ryne Stanek). All of his estimators are well above his ERA (3.61), including a 5.23 DRA. He’s allowed six HRs over his last 91 batters faced. A .205 BABIP is completely unsustainable and his 10.8% Barrels/BBE is third worst on the board. Tampa Bay’s use of an opener makes hitter projections a bit more difficult, but assuming Chirinos should see most of, if not the entire Yankee order twice, there’s some upside in the middle of this order with great hitting conditions expected in New York (premium subscribers have access to Weather Edge). RHBs have been average against Chirinos over the last year (.307 wOBA, .315 xwOBA). Luke Voit (148 wRC+, .164 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Gleyber Torres (114 wRC+, .185 ISO) and Gary Sanchez (88 wRC+, .230 ISO) all line up well here. The latter two are each above a 200 wRC+ over the last week. Sanchez has been destroying nearly one-third of the baseballs he makes contact with this year (29.9% Barrels/BBE). Aaron Hicks (133 wRC+, .204 ISO) may be the bargain if in this lineup though. While LHBs have just a .261 wOBA against Chirinos over the last 12 months, a 47.9 Hard% and 36.4 GB%, push his xwOBA up to .344 and make this a great spot for Hicks, who costs a very reasonable $4.1K on DraftKings. At 4.91 implied runs currently, the Yankees are only eighth highest on today’s board.
Yonny Chirinos a Great Value Saturday
Chirinos would have been a solid play as a long reliever tonight, but given the news that he will now be starting he has even more value at just $6.8k on Draftkings and $7.6k on Fanduel, albeit with likely increased ownership. Chirinos has a solid 3.94 SIERA and 17.4 K-BB% with a .314 xwOBA allowed on the year. He’ll face an Orioles offense that has just an 87 wRC+ and 21.6% K rate vs. RHP in 2019. The Orioles lineup tonight will have just 2 hitters who have an xwOBA above .320 vs. RHP since 2018. Chirinos will have the benefit of pitcher-friendly umpire Lance Barrett. He’ll also have a good shot at getting a W given the Rays are -175 favorites Saturday night. The Orioles have a 3.89 implied line vs. Chirinos and the Orioles.
Dominant numbers lead to a well deserved opportunity
Yonny Chirinos will take the mound to start the game for the third time this year. He’s faced at least 17 batters and thrown at least 67 pitches in three of his four total outings this year, but no more than 22 and 88. He’s impressively missed bats on 11.7% of pitches this year, resulting in a 27.1 K% (21.4 K-BB%) in addition to an 84.7 mph aEV that’s best on the board. Suffice to say, he’s earned this opportunity. The domed environment in Tampa Bay is pitcher friendly, but the Royals have shown some offensive competency this season (107 wRC+, 12.5 K-BB%). None the less, Chirinos appears a superior value below $7.5K on either site tonight.
It's About Time
I really like the fact that we don't have to worry about an opener and whose coming in after for the Rays tonight. Chirinos threw 88 pitches in his start against Houston and has been extremely effective this season. He has a 3.71 xFIP with a 27.1% strikeout rate and a 11.7% swinging strike rate. He's using his sinker/splitter combo against lefties, and a sinker/splitter/slider combo to righties. He's mixing it up really well, and doing a great job keeping hitters off balance. The Royals have been hitting better, and the pitch count could be anywhere for 70 to 100. Those are the biggest concerns, but the upside is certainly worth looking at in this matchup.
High upside bats could overcome bullpen effort
The Yankees suffer a park downgrade in Tampa Bay, who are likely going with the Ryne Stanek/Yonny Chirinos combination today. They have just a 4.28 implied run line, but there are only four teams solidly above them. Chirinos has a wOBA within four points of .300 against batters from either side of the plate this year, but an xwOBA at least 35 points above for batters from either side as well with a hard hit rate above 40%. Aaron Judge (145 wRC+, .296 ISO) and Luke Voit (154 wRC+, .296 ISO) have been exceptional against same-handed pitching this year with Andrew McCutchen (116 wRC+, .160 ISO) a leadoff bat with some value as well.
