Zach Johnson Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Wind continues to be factor this week

Windy conditions played a strong factor over the first two days of the Sony Open. Overall the tee time split favored the late/early wave by almost three shots. Zach Johnson played well this week despite playing in the tougher of two draws. This former Sony Open Champion starts the season strong as he looks to put a disappointing 2019 season in the review mirror. Averaging 2.02 DK Showdown points per hole over the first two days, Johnson will look to build on an excellent start to this year's Sony Open. WIth ownership less than 10% over the first two days, Johnson has gone largely unnoticed and could end up being sneaky play in both showdown and weekend slates. In nine career Saturday rounds at The Sony Open, Johnson owns a scoring average of 68.7 highlighted three rounds of 66 or better. Typically a strong wind player Johnson stands to be a strong factor in what will continue to be windy conditions for this week's event.

Looking for a ZJ Bounceback Spot

This is a fun one. Zach Johnson has had an abysmal 2 years on Tour, falling out of favor of Cash game players and as you can see here, being priced down with relatively inconsistent players. I think ZJ has a bit of a comeback this year and has already started on that path. His Sony Open history is phenomenal and I am counting on some improvement in his game coupled with the comfort of heading back to Waialae. In the last 5 years, ZJ has finished Top 15 3 of the 4 years, 2 of those being Top 10s. He missed the cut last year in the midst of his downturn, albeit by a single shot, and still gained strokes on Approach like he is known for. Sign me up in GPPs this week!

Fifteen minutes to roster lock, no major news to report

Fifteen minutes until roster lock and there is no major news to report. After what seems like forever we get the return of shot tracker this week. ResultsDB will be up and running a few minutes after lock. Good luck this week Grinders!!!

Ten Minutes to roster lock, tee times delayed due to bad weather

It appears that rosters will lock on time today, but due to bad weather, the tee times for round one will be pushed back two hours. You can check back to see how your lineups stack up against the field as ResultsDB be up and running fifteen minutes after lock. As always we will post any late-breaking news before lock. Good luck this week grinders!!!!!

Zach Johnson looks to improve on a solid Open Championship resume

Zach Johnson is on a very short list of players to have won both The Masters and The British Open. Coming off what many would consider a very disappointing finish at last week's John Deere Classic, Johnson could fly under the radar the year's final major. Priced-down due to an overall disappointing season, Johnson has a major resume worth taking note of as you build rosters for the week. After missing the cut at his first three Open appearances, Johnson has made 12 straight cuts in golf's oldest championship. In addition to his win at St. Andrews during the 2015 season, Johnson has six top 25 or better finishes at The Open Championship. While his game may lack the flash that many in the DFS community look for when picking golfers for a major championship it's worth noting that Johnson has only missed one cut in the last 14 majors. During that period Johnson has managed to finish inside the top 25 or better six times. Johnson is used to making the long trip over to play in this event after The John Deere and is once again in a spot to provide value as he prepares to take on the year's final major.

Course History - Exhibit A

ZJ is not having the best of seasons, but his course history at the John Deere Classic is rivaled by only Steve Stricker (who is not competing this year). Johnson is an Iowa native who treats this event like another major, and he has made the cut all eleven times he has played at the JDC. That perfect mark includes six top THREE finishes. Throw in a field that seems even weaker than normal, and you have a nice recipe for a bounce-back performance. The stats are undoubtedly ugly, but that is reflected in the fact that he is no longer priced in the $11,000 range on DK and the $12,000 range on FD. You’re getting a bit of a discount on a player with elite course history, and I’ll take my chances that he gets it locked in this weekend. Just look at his history at this event over the his 11 years – 16-5-34-3-2-2-1-3-21-2-69. Incredible stuff.

Zach Johnson looks to build on a great course history

With the early season adjustment of having a new caddy on the bag, Zach Johnson appears to have his game back on track ahead of this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational. Johnson heads into this week having made three straight cuts. despite poor putting at The Honda Johnson still managed to gain almost 8 strokes tee to green for the week. Historically a good putter, we can assume that Johnson has a great chance to brush off last week's performance on the greens. As the owner of 8 straight cuts at Bay Hill, including three top 15 or better finishes, Johnson seems to always play well at The Arnold Palmer Invitational. Priced down due to a slow start to the season, Johnson stands out as a great play in both cash games and GPP's. In his last six starts at Bay Hill, Johnson has gained strokes all but one time.

A Great Mid-Range Option

While I remain somewhat concerned about the caddie change with Zach Johnson, this will be his third start with his new looper, and the price tag is cheap enough to where I think we need to take notice. TPC Scottsdale offers a lot of opportunities to use short irons and wedges, which is where we all know ZJ specializes. He finished a respectable 28th in his last start at the Desert Classic two weeks ago, and he has made the cut in four consecutive years at this event. That stretch includes three solid top 15’s, and Johnson feels just a bit too cheap given those circumstances. I’ll happily use him as a middle tier option in GPP formats on any site this weekend.

Fool me Once...

Johnson was brutal last week. He couldn’t get anything going and fell to +4 after his eighth hole on Friday. He then played his next nine holes in -5 and only needed a birdie on the par five to make the cut. He hit a good drive, drove it into a greenside bunker, and then skulled the bunker shot over the green. It was painful, but we have to forgive and forget in DFS. The missed cut will lead to lower ownership and his price has come down on DraftKings. He’s gone nearly two full years without missing back-to-back cuts. I’m expecting a big bounce back week from Johnson. He’s a good fit for the course, as he is great with irons, scores well on the par fours, and is one of the best putters in the field.

Zach Johnson looks to bounce back from a missed cut

The start of the 2019 calendar year did not go as planned for PGA Tour veteran Zach Johnson. As one of the more popular picks for the week, Johnson missed a cut at a venue where he historically plays great golf. In the field again this week at The Desert Classic, Johnson will look to rebound from that missed cut as he plays in this event for the ninth time in his career. Priced down to his poor performance last week, Johnson sits as one of the stronger plays in Pt/$/K for the week in our projection model. Johnson will look to build on 4 top 25 or better finishes highlighted by T3 at the 2014 Desert Classic. The ability to have a short memory is a great tool in a game where the line between success and failure is often very thin. The addition of Johnson to your roster build pool is a great way to get exposure to a very talented golfer at a great price.
