Zack Cozart Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections
Zack Cozart (neck) scratched Wednesday; Tommy La Stella replaces
Cozart has been scratched from the Los Angeles Angels original confirmed lineup and will not start in Wednesday’s matchup against the New York Yankees due to lingering neck soreness. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Tommy La Stella, who will now play second base and slot directly into Cozart's vacated ninth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Angels lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against left-hander CC Sabathia at home this evening.
Just Too Cheap for the Talent
Two years ago we saw Zack Cozart play at an All-Star level, but injuries limited what he could put together last season defensively and at the plate. Those days are behind us and i'm expecting him to put last season behind him and become a reliable offensive force for the Angels. Tonight could not be scripted any better for him as he faces a pitcher that will look to keep the ball on the ground. Inversely, Cozart with his 49% fly ball rate will look to put the ball in play through the air. He is not a guy that hits for power, but low strikeouts (9.8%) should work in his favor against a guy that will struggle to strike out my 1 year old daughter. He should have some RBI opportunities in this match-up as well and I like him put up HR numbers without having to send it across the fence.
Zack Cozart scratched Wednesday; Jefry Marte replaces
Cozart has been scratched from the Los Angeles Angels original confirmed lineup and won't start in Wednesday's matchup with the Detroit Tigers due to a presently unspecified reason. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Jefry Marte, who will play first base and slot into the ninth spot in the order, which will bump Martin Maldonado and Cole Calhoun each up one batting position to seventh and eighth, respectively, while Ian Kinsler will now handle the leadoff responsibilities and Luis Valbuena slides over to third base defensively. It goes without saying that there have been some noteworthy changes to this Angels order, so be sure to check out the updated lineup on the Starting Lineups page as they face off against right-hander Mike Fiers on the road this evening.
Zack Cozart is a phenomenal infield value play, leading off for just over $3K against Mike Fiers
The Angels have a 5.07 implied run line that essentially tied for the top spot outside Coors tonight. Batters from either side of the plate have both a wOBA and xwOBA within six points of .350 against Mike Fiers since last season. Zack Cozart (114 wRC+, .214 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) is a phenomenal infield value play in the leadoff spot for just over $3K on either site. Mike Trout (187 wRC+, .340 ISO) is the top bat on the board outside Coors tonight. Justin Upton (124 wRC+, .231 ISO) is a strong play around the $4K price point as well. However, Kevin's morning forecast notes some rain potential and winds blowing in from center at 10-15 mph.
Leading Off With Savings
Assuming Cozart leads off today for Anaheim, this is too good a value to pass up. The surface numbers look a little rough so far, but under the surface it's nothing but good news for Cozart this season. Against left-handed pitching, he has just 10.2% K rate along with 42% hard hits, yet has suffered from a low .205 BABIP. As long as he keeps making hard contact, the numbers are going to catch up. Hitting in front of Mike Trout only increases his value.
Cheap Leadoff Hitter
I like Matt Boyd and I've been using him more and more as the season goes along. That said, I don't like this spot for him. The Angels are full of right-handed hitters, and while Boyd has been better this season, he has still allowed a .336 wOBA against righties since the start of 2017. Zack Cozart should hit leadoff for the Angels, and he's one of my favorite value plays on the slate. Third base is a productive position when constructing lineups, but there is also some value to be had at this price. Cozart has a .257 ISO with a .389 wOBA and only a 12.3% strikeout rate against lefties since the start of 2017.
My favorite Game-stack
With everyone all over Coors tonight I am jumping over to Yankee stadium for the game stack of the night. Don't get me wrong, this game will have ownership.. Just not nearly what it should be on a 6 game slate. Barria has been good but is no match for this Yankees and Gray was better in his last start but matches up poorly with this tough Angels team who get a massive park upgrade. I am interested in 1 through 9 on both sides but love the usual suspects especially.. Namely, Judge, Stanton, Trout, Kinsler, Sanchez and how do we not play the GOAT of the week Gleyber Torres who is looking to homer for the 5th game in a row. However you want to prioritize your funds tonight, i suggest you get a lot of exposure to this game in GPP's and cash games alike.
Too Cheap Coming Back From Injury
Coming back from injury, Cozart is too cheap across the DFS industry. He has a great matchup against Sergio Romo, who will pitch a couple of innings before turning it over to Ryan Yarbrough in a game that will likely see Tampa going to their pen early. The Angels are projected for nearly five runs making this a great spot to target Cozart who will likely be batting first. He's a great play for cash games and has some tournament upside.
Chris Archer has both the highest swinging strike rate (13.9%) and aEV (90.4 mph) on the board
Chris Archer continues to have issues with hard contact. Three HRs in his last start after two straight without one gives him nine allowed for the season. His 90.4 mph aEV is tied for the worst mark on the board. Lefties (.339 wOBA, 41.7 Hard% since last season) hit him harder than righties (.293 wOBA, 38.4 Hard%), but Zack Cozart (116 wRC+, .232 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Mike Trout (179 wRC+, .317 ISO), Justin Upton (117 wRC+, .230 ISO) and Shohei Ohtani (210 wRC+, .362 ISO) all have a chance to do damage. That being said, Archer does have the highest swinging strike rate on the board (13.9%) and may be too cheap on DraftKings, all the way down to $6.9K now. He's not for the risk averse however.
Two extreme fly ball pitchers faces off in Houston with the roof expected to be open
The Angels have the second lowest implied run line on the afternoon slate (3.18) in their matchup against Justin Verlander, one of the two Aces on the early board. Verlander has missed six innings just by a single out once this season, striking out at least nine in three of five starts, allowing more than a single run just once. Only Max Scherzer has averaged more innings per start than his 6.5 over the last two calendar years or has a highest strikeout rate than his 31.7% this year on this board. While he's not going to sustain a .197 BABIP, Verlander is an extreme fly ball pitcher (29.7%) with a high IFFB rate (14.3%) and low Z-Contact rate (76.6%), which profiles well for his mark in the future. This helps his xwOBA (.282) stay below .300 despite still being well above his actual. He's not in an ideal spot against an offense with a 109 wRC+ and 18.6 K% vs RHP, but he does get to face them in a negative run environment, though perhaps a bit less negative with the roof expected to be open. Considering the extreme fly ball profile without much of a platoon split for Verlander, Mike Trout (190 wRC+, .436 xwOBA, .355 ISO, 41.2 Hard%, 47.1 FB% since 2017) is a reasonable play, even against one of the top pitchers in the league. Justin Upton (118 wRC+, .230 ISO, 39.6 Hard%), Zack Cozart (127 wRC+, .228 ISO) and Luis Valbuena (97 wRC+, .227 ISO) exhibit significant pop against RHP as well since last season. The Astros have the third highest implied run line at 4.82 against Nick Tropeano, who pitched well against Kansas City and then struggled against the Red Sox since returning from TJ surgery. It's difficult to draw a lot of analysis from those two matchups on opposite ends of the offensive spectrum, but Tropeano has a career 35 point difference in a standard platoon splite merely because his walk rate is double against LHBs. Batters from either side have a ground ball rate below 30% with something around league average strikeout and hard hit rates. Players not paying up for pitching, may certainly like the big three at a high cost (all above 125 wRC+, .170 ISO vs RHP since last season). Josh Reddick (136 wRC+, .199 ISO), Yulieski Gurriel (129 wRC+, .200 ISO) and Alex Bregman (112 wRC+, .165 ISO) cost around $1K less. Marwin Gonzalez (148 wRC+, .217 ISO) cheaper still, though there's a 43 point drop from his wOBA to his xwOBA vs RHP since last season. All except Gurriel (108) exceed a 140 wRC+ over the last week, though only Gonzalez, George Springer and Carlos Correa are above a 25% hard hit rate over that span.
