Rhode Island Sports Betting
It might not be a place that jumps to mind when you hear “sports betting.” But in the aftermath of PASPA’s fall, Rhode Island was present and accounted for as one of the first states to legalize sports betting.
Prior to 2018, Rhode Islanders twice voted to pass casino gambling in the state (2012 and 2016). As a result, two class III casinos with sports betting were approved and constructed. And on June 22, 2018 – roughly a month after the SCOTUS ruled against PASPA – Rhode Island passed legislation that legalized sports betting.
The first legal sports bets in Rhode Island are expected to be placed at Twin River Casinos in Lincoln around Thanksgiving 2018.

Governor Gina Raimondo has been a driving force behind the legalization of sports betting in Rhode Island. Raimondo added legal sports betting to her budget in 2018, and state legislators had no objections.
The Rhode Island Lottery operates all sports betting in the state, and operations are regulated by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation. Unlike in New Jersey, as of November 2018, Rhode Island has no legislation – and no known plans for legislation – to legalize online and mobile sports betting.
