The Essential Guide to Mobile and Online Sports Betting in Rhode Island
It might not be a place that jumps to mind when you hear “sports betting.” But in the aftermath of PASPA’s fall, Rhode Island was present and accounted for as one of the first states to legalize sports betting.
Prior to 2018, Rhode Islanders twice voted to pass casino gambling in the state (2012 and 2016). As a result, two class III casinos with sports betting were approved and constructed. And on June 22, 2018 – roughly a month after the SCOTUS ruled against PASPA – Rhode Island passed legislation that legalized sports betting.
The first legal sports bets in Rhode Island were taken in November 2018 at Twin River Casino in Lincoln in November 2018. Just a few weeks later sports betting began at Twin River Tiverton.
On March 25, 2019, Governor Raimondo signed S37, an bill that will allow mobile and online sports betting. Right now there is only one mobile sportsbook in the state. It is called Sportsbook Rhode Island, and it is powered by William Hill/Caesars and IGT. It is owned by the state and features all the biggest sports and sporting events. The odds are competitive but the promotions are very limited.
The Rhode Island Lottery operates all sports betting in the state, and operations are regulated by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation.
