Today’s Week 8 NFL slate will wrap up with a marquee matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
Ahead of kickoff, oddsmakers have priced the 49ers as 5.5-point favorites on the spread. The total is set at 48 points.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
According to Evan Abrams of The Action Network, Dak Prescott is 2-9 ATS in his last 11 starts when priced as an underdog. Brock Purdy has made 12 night starts in his career, going 9-3 SU and 7-5 ATS in those contests, including 6-1 SU at home and 4-3 at home.
Dallas Cowboys Preview
Prescott struggling to get going this fall
Dak Prescott had his name in MVP conversations for much of last season, but that won’t be the case in 2024. Through 7 weeks, Prescott ranks 24th out of 40 qualified quarterbacks in EPA/play, 22nd in success rate, and 32nd in CPOE. Part of the issue is likely attributable to the Cowboys’ offensive line experiencing some turnover this past offseason, with part of the issue also being that the team is very thin on talent in the receiving room.
Still, Prescott hasn’t helped matters much. He’s done a relatively good job taking care of the football, with the 7th-lowest turnover-worthy play rate in the NFL, but that’s about all there is positive to say about his showing so far this year.
Parsons, Phillips, Bland ruled OUT
The Cowboys’ defense will once again be missing a number of key pieces in Week 8, with CB Daron Bland, EDGE Micah Parsons, and DT Jordan Phillips each unavailable to play. LB Eric Kendricks was limited at practice on Friday as well but is expected to be available this evening.
Since Parsons last played in Week 4, Dallas’ defense ranks 30th in EPA/play and 29th in success rate, making them one of the worst units in the entire NFL during that stretch.
San Francisco 49ers Preview
Purdy airing it out in 2024
Entering the weekend, only Anthony Richardson (12.4) had a higher aDOT than Brock Purdy (10.2) this season among qualified quarterbacks. Though Purdy has been frequently branded as a “systems quarterback” who only benefits from being surrounded by elite talent, he’s one of the more aggressive signal callers in the league. Purdy ranked 12th in aDOT last year as well, so any notion of him being a conservative game manager is simply not true.
However, Purdy will be tested on an entirely new level in Week 8, with WR Jauan Jennings and WR Brandon Aiyuk already ruled out. WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle are listed as questionable after being limited participants at practice on Friday, which could further complicate matters.
Lenoir listed as QUESTIONABLE
San Francisco’s defense is dealing with the injury bug heading into Sunday Night Football as well, with CB Deommodore Lenoir listed as questionable after being limited at practice on Friday. Lenoir has been one of the better coverage cornerbacks in the NFL so far this season, ranking 27th in coverage grade, per PFF. He’s played at least 51 snaps in each of his team’s first 7 games, making his status worth monitoring ahead of kickoff.
Cowboys vs. 49ers Prediction
Both of these teams are going to be extremely shorthanded on Sunday Night Football, with the Cowboys and 49ers missing multiple starters. Dallas has struggled in all facets of the game early this season, but they should be able to keep this game competitive against a San Francisco team that could be without most of their key contributors on the offensive side of the ball.
PICK: Cowboys +5.5 (-110, DraftKings)
