Measuring Sports Betting Success
Let’s backtrack for a second. What is a unit? A unit is a generic term used in the sports betting community to help measure success and profit. It’s typically used in place of an actual dollar amount.
Everyone’s “unit” is different. Perhaps Sports Bettor X uses a benchmark of $1 for every wager he/she places – Sports Bettor X would consider $1 equal to 1 unit. If Sports Bettor Y uses $100 as a typical wager amount, then $100 would be the unit for Sports Bettor Y. So, if Sports Bettor Y tailed every single MLB pick made by ScoresAndOdds experts this season, Y, in theory, would be profiting $6,280 to date ($100 times 62.8 units).
Why do you see losing records occasionally?
Well, you can’t win ‘em all. That’s for sure. Many of our experts like finding wagers at plus money, and the higher the odds, the less likely a sportsbook believes that outcome will occur. Home run player props are a perfect example to use here, as all of them are at plus money (unless you are the Padres and Giants playing in Mexico City).
Let’s say an expert picks three home runs props today, risking one unit each, all at +400 odds. The day is over, and only one home run pick was successful. It may seem like a bad day, but a “losing” 1-2 home run record is misleading. Profit is the only thing that matters when the smoke clears. This expert would lose one unit each for the two players that did not hit a home run but would gain FOUR (at +400 odds or 4/1 on your money) units thanks to the lone home run that was hit. Yes, it’s a losing record, but it’s still a 2-unit profit at the end of the day!
