Searching for a Specialist: RBC Canadian Open

They say all good things must come to an end. That is playing its hand this week as this will be the final search for a specialist.

It all started at the 2015 PGA Championship and it’s been a lot of fun diving into the numbers over the last four years. Check out the original specialist search if you want to have a little laugh. My thought process has grown a lot over the years and I hope some of you also learned a bit along the way.

Getting back on task, let’s turn our attention toward Hamilton Golf & Country Club for this week’s Canadian Open.

The angles to target this week are Performance on Bentgrass/Poa Greens, Less-than-Driver Courses, Par 70 Courses, Short Courses, and Performance in the Spring.

Here we go…

Bentgrass/Poa Greens

Hamilton G&CC features poa annua greens but they try to get bentgrass in there to solidify things for all weather scenarios.

As a result, let’s have a look at performance on any poa annua or bentgrass greens.

The 10 Bent/Poa Specialists:

Tom Lovelady (1.098 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.304 sg:total)
Curtis Luck (1.017 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.319 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.4 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.995 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (0.684 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.298 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.073 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.688 sg:total)
Stephan Jaeger (0.685 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.306 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.648 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.273 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.439 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.095 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.124 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.711 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.396 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bent/Poa Greens since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy.

One alarming name near the bottom is Dylan Frittelli. He hasn’t done much on bent/poa yet but I’m going to give him a pass for now because of sample size.

Less-than-Driver Courses

Based on quotes from 2012, it’s easy to see that driver won’t be a primary weapon this week.

“I like to hit driver a lot, and this golf course I felt took the driver out of my hands.” – Scott Piercy

“If you’re not comfortable with driver, dial it back to a 3-wood, or hit a 5-wood just to get it in play.” -William McGirt

“We weren’t going to pound driver all day, but the holes we could take advantage of it, we’re going to hit it. We could hit it 6 times a day which is more than I thought I was going to.” -Robert Garrigus

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Joaquin Niemann (1.921 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.217 sg:total)
Alex Noren (1.873 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.375 sg:total)
Wyndham Clark (1.181 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.695 sg:total)
Julian Etulain (1.15 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.7 sg:total)
Curtis Luck (0.657 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.319 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.445 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.127 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.587 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.273 sg:total)
Roger Sloan (0.475 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.164 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.532 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.226 sg:total)
Jonathan Byrd (0.809 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.513 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on Less-than-Driver Courses since 2014 are Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Justin Thomas.

Alex Noren is one name that sees a big boost here. He’s posted top-20 worthy performances in 6 of his last 13 starts (46%) on less-than-driver courses. His baseline on other courses over that time is under 25%.

Par 70 Courses

This event has seen Glen Abbey host in recent years which is an eaglefest with four easy par 5s.

The par 5s remain pretty easy this week but there are just two per round now.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

David Lingmerth (1.569 sg:par70 vs. 0.901 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.527 sg:par70 vs. 0.908 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (1.972 sg:par70 vs. 1.41 sg:total)
Corey Conners (1.401 sg:par70 vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.929 sg:par70 vs. 0.381 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (0.688 sg:par70 vs. 0.167 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.711 sg:par70 vs. 1.226 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.863 sg:par70 vs. 2.396 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.658 sg:par70 vs. 2.199 sg:total)
Wes Roach (0.527 sg:par70 vs. 0.071 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Par 70s since 2014 are Brooks Koepka, Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Matt Kuchar.

Kuchar shows up on this list and he’s the exact profile of a golfer that should thrive on par 70s. He doesn’t need par 5s to make his money. The same goes for plodders like Austin Cook and Ryan Armour who show up on the list… then there is Brooks Koepka. For him, it’s about the toughness factor. The tougher the beater in his eyes and when you take away two par 5s, it certainly gets a little harder to score.

Performance on Short Courses

Hamilton G&CC is a par 70 that is less than 7,000 yards. One of the shortest venues these pros will see all year.

There are four par 4s under 410 yards and just one over 450 yards. Both of the par 5s are also short.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:

Scott Langley (1.389 sg:short vs. 0.474 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.822 sg:short vs. 2.122 sg:total)
Jonathan Byrd (1.079 sg:short vs. 0.513 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.239 sg:short vs. 0.674 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.488 sg:short vs. 0.976 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.088 sg:short vs. 0.584 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.871 sg:short vs. 1.396 sg:total)
Brian Harman (1.613 sg:short vs. 1.142 sg:total)
Josh Teater (0.876 sg:short vs. 0.404 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.844 sg:short vs. 0.381 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Short Courses since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Adam Hadwin, and Brandt Snedeker.

You might think that short courses would handcuff someone like Dustin Johnson but his steady-round rate actually sees a slight boost versus his baseline rate. Likely due to his improved wedge play over the last few years.

Performance in the Spring

Playing in the spring is often about the weather conditions.

Courses usually see rain in the lead-up to an event or during the event. That leads to some softer courses.

It also has to do with scheduling. Some golfers might work their tail off during the fall and winter but then get fatigued in mid-season. Others are slow out of the gate but they plan their year so they can peak during major season.

Let’s see who likes this time of year…

The Top 10 Springtime Specialists:

Nicholas Lindheim (0.885 sg:spring vs. 0.127 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (3.119 sg:spring vs. 2.396 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.587 sg:spring vs. 0.995 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (1.906 sg:spring vs. 1.315 sg:total)
Denny McCarthy (1.631 sg:spring vs. 1.081 sg:total)
Seamus Power (1.12 sg:spring vs. 0.636 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.371 sg:spring vs. -0.087 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.347 sg:spring vs. -0.104 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (1.907 sg:spring vs. 1.526 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.046 sg:spring vs. 0.676 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the Spring since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka, Webb Simpson, and Henrik Stenson.

What a shocker, the guy who crushes majors (Koepka) generally plays well during major season.

On the flipside you have someone like Swafford who has generally done his damage in the fall then fades away as the season progresses.

Baseline Performance

We now have 10 golfers that are positive in all five angles. Now we can get picky and trim the golfers that don’t grade out properly in long-term baseline or current form.

Tyler Duncan: 71st in FORM; 91st in 1-Year Baseline
David Lingmerth: 80th in FORM
Harold Varner III: 75th in FORM

David Lingmerth has crushed it at the Muirfield Village in the past and the 2012 Hamilton leaderboard showed a lot of overlap with success at that venue. Perhaps he can get back on track this week.

Duncan and HV3 also have good course fit but not the best form on their side. I would only consider these three in MME builds.

The Specialists

Ryan Armour
Danny Lee
Peter Malnati

Ryan Armour gets the tag this week.

I would have loved some more exciting names on the final specialist search but this is where the numbers fell.

Armour has found trouble finding the bottom of the cup lately, posting fewer birdies than the field in six straight starts. Could a snug course fit help him snap out of that? I sure hope so. His baseline improves by more than half a shot per round when playing on par 70 layouts.

Next up is Danny Lee who recently added some power to his corner by working with George Gankas. His accuracy is suffering in the process. Let’s hope the less-than-driver aspect will let him dial it back a bit and not get punished by his recent inaccuracies.

Finally, we have Peter Malnati. There isn’t one angle that stand out above the rest this week, they just generally all fit his profile. He’s also one of the biggest risers when it comes to improving his baseline (1-year versus 5-year). Diving into his numbers, it’s easy to see where the improvement is coming from. It’s his iron play. Similar to Danny Lee, we need the less-than-driver aspect to mask some of his troubles with the big stick.

Like I just said I would have loved to have some sexier names for the last specialist search but we are dealing with three golfers with an average salary of just $7,200 this week. Let’s go out with a bang!

The Anti-Specialists

Carlos Ortiz
Adam Schenk
Justin Thomas

Thomas is working his way back from injury so I have no troubles fading him.

It’s actually Carlos Ortiz that draws a little bit of interest here due to his price. Ortiz has shown a huge boost in his baseline performance over the last year so I’m willing to give him a pass on his course fit. After all, we are paying bottom-of-the-barrel pricing for him this week. I think a cut made is actually somewhat likely for him.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Brooks Koepka
Dustin Johnson
Jim Furyk
Scott Piercy
Aaron Wise
Brandt Snedeker
Sergio Garcia
Shane Lowry
Webb Simpson
Matt Kuchar
Bud Cauley
Rory Mcilroy
Erik van Rooyen
Peter Malnati
Henrik Stenson
Daniel Berger
Keegan Bradley
Bubba Watson
Kevin Tway
Joaquin Niemann

Some interesting names show up on the list above. First we have each of the last two Hamilton winners (Furyk and Piercy) inside the top 5. When we have Lowry inside the top 10? Interesting. EVR is popping but that’s mostly due to smaller samples. Kevin Tway sneaks in at No. 19 but can we really trust him on a course that will likely punish errant tee shots? I can’t personally.

Tough to argue with Brooks and DJ at the top though. They’ve proven they can adapt their game to all styles of courses.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history over the last 10 years. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 12 weeks (PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
