World Cup DFS Picks & Strategy: Monday, June 15th
The World Cup continues this Monday, as Group Play continues with Group G and Group H taking center stage. The 4 matches start at 12:00 PM ET with kickoff every 3 hours throughout the afternoon and evening. Today will be the biggest prize pools that DraftKings has had so far in the tournament ($100,000 to 1st place!), so it’s a great day to jump into the fantasy soccer action.
The first game of the day features Group H favorite Spain taking on Cape Verde in the most lopsided matchup on the board. Belgium is the Group G favorite, and they start their World Cup journey with a matchup against Egypt at 3:00 PM ET. At 6:00 PM ET, Uruguay takes on Saudi Arabia in the other Group H contest, before the day wraps up with Iran taking on New Zealand in Los Angeles at 9:00 PM ET.
According to the FIFA World Rankings, Spain is #2 in the world, while Belgium is #10. In the next tier, Uruguay is #17, Iran is #20, and Egypt is #29. The three lowest-ranked teams on today’s board are Saudi Arabia at #60, Cape Verde at #67, and New Zealand at #85.
Just a reminder that the tournament has been expanded to include more teams in both the Group Stage and Knockout Rounds this year. As a result, the top 2 teams will be moving on from each group, and 8 3rd-place teams will earn a spot in the Round of 32 as well.
Spain, Belgium, Uruguay, Iran and Egypt are all favored to advance from these groups, although none of these squads have played yet, making everything uncertain. Since we haven’t seen these teams in action, the rankings and odds can be helpful in determining which teams to lean in to as you start building your lineups.

Top Play: Ferran Torres, Spain ($9,800)
The highest-ranked team on today’s board is also the heaviest favorite, as Spain is expected to roll past Cape Verde in the first game of the day. Torres has the highest projection of all players on the entire slate, and with Mikel Oyarzabal ($11,000) and Lamine Yamal ($10,800) both working their way back from injuries, Torres should get some extra work in this lopsided contest. Even if those two are available, the team will be closely monitoring and possibly limiting their minutes, leaving Torres to get plenty of work up top.
Torres scored 16 goals and added 2 assists during the club season for Barcelona, helping them to win the La Liga Championship after supplanting Robert Lewandowski in the starting lineup. Torres has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain in rumors, but for now, his focus is on helping his Spanish squad get the win over Cape Verde.
He does save some salary over Oyarzabal and has a higher raw projection. It will be interesting to see which player is listed as playing up top when the starting XI comes out, but whether Torres starts up top or on the wing, he has enough goal-scoring potential to be a key pay-up forward to build around for Spain in today’s matchup.
