World Cup DFS Picks & Strategy: Thursday, July 2nd
Only two days remain before the Round of 16 is set and the World Cup moves on to the next round. On Thursday, three more tickets are up for grabs, and DraftKings has a solid slate of fantasy contests on the board once again, whether you prefer playing showdown formats from just one game or attacking the full slate in a classic lineup format.
The action starts later on Thursday with a 3:00 PM ET kickoff when Austria takes on Spain. At 7:00 PM ET in primetime, Portugal takes on Croatia before Algeria and Switzerland close out the night with a late 11:00 PM ET kickoff in Vancouver.
According to the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook, Spain is by far the heaviest favorite of the day, with Portugal and Switzerland also significant favorites. The closest game on the board, according to the odds, is the final game of the day as Algeria and Switzerland battle for the 13th spot in the next stage. The last three games in this round will be on Friday, and then the Round of 16 begins this weekend.
Since we have reached the Knockout Stage, it’s important to remember that every match is an elimination game for each team. These three matchups are part of the Round of 32, with teams just five wins from hoisting the World Cup. Extra time will be played if the game is tied at the end of regulation, with two 15-minute halves plus stoppage time. There is no “Golden Goal,” and the entire period will be played even if a team scores. If there is no winner at the end of extra time, the teams will have a penalty shootout to determine the winner. As we’ve already seen from a few matches, penalty conversions and saves are important fantasy opportunities to keep in mind during this stage.
