2018 SuperContest Recap: Three Tied for First Place After Wild Week 2
The second week of action for the 2018 Las Vegas SuperContest is in the books. It was a wild week that saw several popular picks lose against the spread and less than 2 points earned on average per contestant. At the end of it all, just three teams remained tied for first place.
The three teams tied for first after Week 2 were “RICK D,” “H2OBOY,” and “FINALLY 2019.” Each of them went 5-0 in Week 2 and share 9-1 records overall.
Of the 3,123 entries in the 2018 SuperContest, 24 went 5-0 in Week 2.
After Week 1, 65 teams were tied with perfect 5-0 records, but none of those teams did better than 3-2 in Week 2, and only 13 of the teams that went 5-0 in Week 1 posted 3-2 records in Week 2. Everyone else did worse than 3-2. Legendary sportscaster Brent Musburger was one of the teams tied for first place after the opening week, but his 5-0 Week 1 was followed by a 2-3 Week 2 to leave him 7-3 overall and tied for 76th place. Musburger’s entry is “VSiN 1.”
First place in the 2018 Las Vegas SuperContest is $1.422 million, with the top 100 places set to earn a cash payout.
Team SharpSide Slides with 1-4 Week 2
Team SharpSide, with the contest entry name “SharpSide.com,” went 1-4 in Week 2. The only winning pick came from selecting the Los Angeles Chargers (-7) against the Buffalo Bills. The other fours picks — Carolina Panthers (+6), Houston Texans (PK), New York Jets (-2.5), and New England Patriots (-1) — were all losers.
Overall, Team SharpSide sits at 4-5-1 overall and will be looking to bounce back in Week 3.
Remember SharpSiders can help us decide on which games we pick as the five to put on our SuperContest card. For Week 1, Team SharpSide sourced the most popular selections from our social media giveaway and came up with the following picks for Week 1. Once the SharpSide sports betting app is launched, the top five most popular picks will be used as our weekly SuperContest card, as long as there are no major line movements. This means that you, the sports betting fan, have the opportunity to help us win.
Popular Picks Go Down in Flames
The top five consensus picks represent the five most popular picks of the week. Ahead of the 2018 season, the weekly top five consensus picks were 200-214-11 going back to 2013. That’s a sub-50% winning percentage, but in Week 1 of this year the top five most popular picks got off to a positive start with a 4-1 record. The winning ways did not stay the same in Week 2.
The top five consensus picks went 0-5. The top 10 consensus picks went 2-8. If you were on one of the most popular sides, it didn’t end well for you. The two popular selections that won were the Chargers (-7) and Indianapolis Colts (+6). The Chargers were the sixth most popular pick of the week, and the Colts were the seventh.
The most popular pick of Week 2 was the Texans (PK), who were on the road against the Tennessee Titans. Despite the non-contest line closing around 4 in most sportsbooks, the Titans won outright by a score of 20-17. The Texans were selected by 1,514 contestants, meaning 48.5% of the SuperContest had selected Houston.
