2024 3M Open Forecast and Projections

We’re teeing off for the 3M Open this week back stateside in Blaine, MN, and while the weather will mostly cooperate, there are some gusty times.

As usual in my golf weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts. With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another. You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on DFS sites and sportsbooks.

3M Open Weather Forecast

Thursday, July 25th

It’s a great day for golf. Winds are around 5 mph early, increasing to 10 mph late. Gusts will be up to 15 mph, with no rain and plenty of sunshine.

Friday, July 26th

It does get a bit breezier on Friday, but mostly manageably so. I expect AM winds to be 5-10 mph early, increasing to 10+ mph by noon, and 15 mph sustained winds by the afternoon. Winds could gust around or even over 20 mph all day, and some forecast models even show higher gusts in the morning than afternoon, though I tend to think the morning wave will get the better of conditions by a hair.

Saturday, July 27th

Winds are still an issue, with 10-15 mph winds throughout the day and likely highest in the afternoon.

Sunday, July 28th

Winds around 10 mph sustained, with a low chance of a shower or storm in the late afternoon.

3M Open Weather Thoughts

I’m not too confident that we’ll see a significant weather edge in the 3M Open, and I’m not even sure if my preferred weather lean (which, by the way, is Thurs PM / Fri AM) will get the better of the draw. Still, my gut tells me that a few forecast models being aggressive with wind gusts Friday morning are off, and we’ll actually get easier conditions than what PM golfers will see, so I have a slight lean to that side of the draw.
