NFL Playoffs 2020: AFC Championship Betting Picks for Titans vs. Chiefs

Article Image

The Titans are on quite the run as they head to Kansas City to meet the Super Bowl favorite Chiefs. After winning two road games as considerable underdogs, the Titans will look to overcome long odds and punch a ticket to Super Bowl 54. Will the Chiefs and Andy Reid represent the AFC or will Derrick Henry carry Tennessee to another road victory?

AFC Championship Betting Picks — Titans vs. Chiefs

On the back of another sensational Derrick Henry performance and a few turnovers, the Tennessee Titans upset the then Super Bowl favorite, Baltimore Ravens. For the third straight week, the Titans will be big underdogs on the road. Only, this time would punch a ticket to Super Bowl 54.

Derrick Henry is the Titans’ offense. Tennessee ran 108 total offensive plays in their first two playoff games. Derrick Henry touched the ball 68 times, even throwing a touchdown pass against the Ravens last week. On the ground, his 5.89 yards per rushing attempt is outstanding and will likely be a key factor against a Chiefs’ defense with run-stopping issues.

Kansas City allowed 4.9 yards per rushing attempt throughout the course of the season. Over their last three games, the Titans accumulated 38.7 rushing attempts per game. Mike Vrabel and company want to establish the run early and often and will aim to exploit the Chiefs’ defensive weakness.

On the other side, the Chiefs overcame a 24-0 first-half deficit against the Texans in the Divisional Round. Before halftime, the explosive Chiefs’ offense put Kansas city back on top 28-24 and never looked back. Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns and 321 yards while Travis Kelce and Damien Williams each collected three touchdowns in the comeback victory. Unlike the Baltimore Ravens, the Chiefs demonstrated how no lead is safe with an offense that averaged 29.5 points per game and 6.3 yards per play in 2019.

The Titans’ best bet would be to keep Patrick Mahomes off of the field by feeding Derrick Henry and bleeding away the clock. With the way that the Chiefs scored so many points — so quickly — against the Texans, my fear for the Titans is the Chiefs forcing them into obvious passing situations. The Chiefs averaged 2.9 sacks per game over the regular season and 3.7 over their last few contests. With a rabid home crowd behind them, the Chiefs might be too much for the Cinderella Titans.

AFC Championship Betting Picks —Titans at Chiefs

While I worry about the Titans’ ability to play keep away, I cannot bet against a team that overcame such a large margin last weekend. Even with all of the unforeseen breaks, Patrick Mahomes was poised and put together an all-time performance in the come-from-behind victory. I think the Chiefs will clean up some of the mistakes and get a lead and never look back. I will lay the seven points on Kansas City this weekend for my AFC Championship betting pick.

The Pick: Kansas City Chiefs -7 (-108) (PointsBet)
