Centers

Mikael Backlund – There are a few factors here that make the Calgary Flames in general — and Backlund in particular — a great play tonight. First, the Washington Capitals are playing their third game in four nights (and back-to-back) on the opposite coast. Second, Washington as a whole has very poor defensive numbers to start the year. Finally, Backlund figures to draw out against the Alex Ovechkin line. That is important because the Washington top line has horrendous 5v5 Corsi-For % numbers; we’re talking around 45% CF% with CA/60 numbers near 66 shot attempts per 60 minutes of play. As it turns out Backlund and the Calgary top line has excellent possession numbers, so look for the “3M” line, led by Backlund, to continuously be in a strong position for points tonight.
