On Wednesday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers will suit-up against the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedExForum. Following a five-game west coast road trip, Cleveland returned home for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 113-103 to pull into a tie for the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Memphis enters play this evening on a 10-game winning streak, and can move into a tie for the best record in the Western Conference with a win over the Cavaliers. In this matchup, oddsmakers are expecting a comfortable win for Memphis, pricing them as 8-point home favorites on the spread.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell OUT
In their first 45 games this season, Cleveland is 26-14 with Donovan Mitchell in the lineup, but only 2-3 in the five games that he has missed. Per Cleaning the Glass, the team ranks in the 61st percentile in offensive efficiency and the 81st percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the floor, compared to the 55th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 86th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the sidelines.

In his first year with the Cavaliers, Mitchell is leading the team in scoring, averaging 28.4 points per game. His absence means that there will be more than 20 shots available for the rest of the roster to absorb.

Who will step up offensively for Cleveland?

Per CourtIQ, Jarrett Allen experiences the largest increase in usage (+8.2%) when Mitchell is off of the floor this season. In these situations, Allen is averaging 22.7 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per 36 minutes of action. In four games played without Mitchell this year, Allen has scored 23 points, nine points, 21 points, and 13 points, respectively.

Memphis Grizzlies

Longest winning streak in the NBA
Entering play on Wednesday, Memphis has won 10 games in a row, which is the longest current winning streak of any team in the league. In that span, Memphis has beaten mostly inferior competition, with their only notable wins coming against the New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings.

Still, Memphis has been impressive, outscoring their opponents by 13.4 points per 100 possessions during their recent hot streak. Only one of their 10 victories has come by less than eight points.

Dominant at home
Memphis owns the second-best home record in the NBA this season at 19-3, and with only the Denver Nuggets, who are 20-3 at home, owning a higher winning percentage in their home gym this season. The Grizzlies are outscoring their opponents by a league-best 11.5 points per 100 possessions at the FedExForum in 22 games this year.

Playing at home, Memphis has been particularly strong defending the perimeter, ranking 8th in opponent three-point percentage. The primary weakness of this defense has been an inability to defend without fouling. This game could end up closer than the market is suggesting if the Cavaliers make a concerted effort to attack the rim in this matchup.

Cavaliers vs. Grizzlies – Picks & Predictions

Though the Cavaliers have a poor record on the road this year, 9-13, they still own the league’s fifth-best Net Rating when away from home. Tonight, the Cavaliers will be without their leading-scorer, but their defense has performed much better with Mitchell off of the floor this year compared to when he is on the court. Cleveland is going to have a tough time winning this contest outright, but they have enough talent to cover this large spread.

PICK: Cavaliers +7.5 (-110)
