CBB Grind Down: Mon, Jan 5th
Glean insight from one of the game’s best, Varncass, as he lists picks he’ll actually be targeting in his tournament games below, along with detailed analysis and reasoning.
Monday, January 5th
We have five games on the docket today and some of the bigger sized contests that we have seen this year. There are two real games to target here, and both start at 7pm, so it may be a good idea to get most of your players out of the way early and then sweat low possessions at the end.

Notre Dame
Primary Plays
Jerian Grant – Any time Grant plays, he is in play unless he is ridiculously priced. He sits at 8,600 today which is affordable with some value plays. Grant is one of the best players in the nation and can score on anyone, but UNC’s fast tempo is going to be great for Grant’s fantasy potential. Grant has played a lot of 65 possession games but we should see this one north of 70.
Pat Connaughton – Connaughton remained strangely irrelevant in the Georgia Tech game until the 2nd overtime when he took over. It seemed that he struggled a bit with the big interior and was not hitting his shots. I think this game sets up well for him as he should be a large part in the offense in a high pace game and also run the break a lot of the game. If North Carolina goes zone, he should be the perfect zone buster.
Secondary Plays
Demetrius Jackson – Jackson is just a little bit under Connaughton who I would grab over him, but he still makes a solid play. North Carolina’s perimeter defense is elite and while Jackson was heavily involved against Georgia Tech, he had a disappointing game considering he got 10 extra minutes of time. All of the Notre Dame guys are fine plays today against the uptempo Tar Heels.
North Carolina
Primary Plays
Marcus Paige – Paige is a little expensive on FanDuel, but I really like him tonight. Not only does Notre Dame have a terrible perimeter defense (none of the big 3 are particularly great, although Jerian Grant has improved the defense), but despite Notre Dame’s slow tempo, they have the 66th fastest offensive possessions which should really speed this game up. Paige should do well an hit about 4-5 3’s in this game and pay off his value.
Kennedy Meeks – Meeks is the most consistent fantasy play for North Carolina. He gets double digit rebounds almost every game and is relied on to score. While Notre Dame’s interior defense is fairly solid, he should have a good day inside and is worth paying up for because of the high tempo in this game.
Secondary Plays
None – I can see taking a gamble on Brice Johnson maybe in a GPP, but I probably will not be partaking. Roy Williams’ rotations leave a lot to be desired and North Carolina does a great job of spreading the ball around. If you like minimum salary gambles, Hicks and Pinson both get barely under 20 minutes of run and have the potential to reach 17 fantasy points.
