Glean insight from one of the game’s best, Varncass, as he lists picks he’ll actually be targeting in his tournament games below, along with detailed analysis and reasoning.

Happy New Year’s Eve! After a solid slate yesterday for college hoops, we get an even bigger one, and enough games to have a split slate which is incredible. There is lots of money out there tonight and lots of analysis to get to. There should not be a whole lot of overlap with so many games, so it is all about making good, solid picks for today’s games.

St. John’s

Primary Plays

Sir’Dominic Pointer – Pointer’s price has been slowly sneaking up, but his ability is undeniable. He does not have a great offensive game, but is extremely athletic, and contributes in assists, rebounds, steals, blocks and points. He is a better play for the money than Harrison as Harrison is completely dependent on points to make fantasy value. I am not enamored by the matchup against Seton Hall, but Pointer seems a bit matchup proof.

Secondary Plays

Chris Obkepa – Again, Obekpa remains to me only a GPP option. He has massive block upside but is also as inconsistent as Josh Smith out there. Obekpa has no offensive game and relies almost completely on putbacks to make his value. Seton Hall’s perimeter defense is better than their post defense so he is a viable gamble, but at his price, I am not in love.

Seton Hall

Primary Plays

Khadeen Carrington – I know Brandon Mobley did not play last game, but Carrington received a huge bump off the bench in Whitehead’s absence. He sits at 4,500 and is almost guaranteed to get enough run to hit 20 fantasy points in this one. He played 27 minutes against Maine, and he is more of the future for the Pirates than Sina is, so I am sure that Willard wants to get him run.

Secondary Plays

Sterling Gibbs – Gibbs took a backseat to the massive usage rate that Whitehead was commanding, but now without Whitehead the common sense option is that Gibbs is going to receive a ton of the shots. He played 28 minutes (in a blowout) and was the go-to option. Gibbs is a scorer and knows how to put the ball in the bucket, so Seton Hall is in decent hands at home here, the issue I have is his price. Generally I would like a bargain on my guys who are stepping in for injury, but Gibbs is still pricy at 7,000 and I do not fully trust him to hit 30 fantasy points.
