CBB Grind Down: Tuesday, February 24th
Glean insight from one of the game’s best, Varncass, as he lists picks he’ll actually be targeting in his tournament games below, along with detailed analysis and reasoning.
Tuesday, February 24
Welcome to Tuesday. In one week, the conference tournaments begin, as this is the last week of regular season games for the mid-majors. The major conferences still have a week left of games after Saturday, which is what we will be playing with, but next Tuesday begins the two-week period which rivals the NCAA tournament in drama and intrigue. For many Cinderella teams, you cannot make it to the dance without winning your conference tournament, and the most emotion of all is shown in these championship games.
Texas at West Virginia

Texas
Kendal Yancy ($5,400) – This is not one of the more glorious games on this slate (there are a few), but it does bring a couple of targets. Yancy has been playing a massive part in this Texas offense over the last three games and I would expect his role to continue to grow after his monster game last time out. Texas is at West Virginia, and they are going to need as many ball handlers as possible on the floor, so I think we see Yancy get 30 minutes here. I would not expect 40 points, but crossing value sure is likely.
West Virginia
None – Staten is a little bit too expensive and I would rather spend those salary dollars on guys from UNC/NC State or Auburn/LSU, especially considering WVU plays a lot of guys, Texas plays very slow and Williams has a poor matchup. Staten’s price really worries me, as he has made value a couple of times but is generally under the 33 needed for value. Texas crushed WVU in their first matchup and Staten was poor in that one, although it was mostly because of minutes and he was struggling then. This just is not a situation I want to mess with.
Wisconsin at Maryland
Wisconsin | Maryland | |||||||
Vegas Total | 130 | Fast Break Pts/Gm | 5.45 | Vegas Total | 130 | Fast Break Pts/Gm | 4.82 | |

Wisconsin
Frank Kaminsky ($10,100) – This is not one of my favorite games to target on the slate, but Wisconsin has a high total and you know that Kaminsky is going to be a big part of that. He has a 30-point floor, and while you have to pay a lot for him, especially for a price tag he probably won’t reach value on, you are paying for consistency. He makes a great cash game play, since you know you will get 30 from him and then you can worry on the rest of your roster.
Maryland
None – I do not want to take any Maryland players here. Even at home, it is not a good matchup against Wisconsin’s defense, especially for Trimble, as Wisconsin does not foul and will not put you at the line. Guys like Layman, Wells and Trimble are going to have to hit some long twos here, and I want no part of their 62 over/under.
