Happy Friday! This is a super strange 13-game slate tonight. Almost every pitcher on the slate is at least decent, and the majority of the better pitchers are facing the better offenses. This leaves us with the most expensive pitchers being overshadowed by the mid-tier and a lot of the best offenses in the league being afterthoughts. Let’s dig in and see what happens.
Friday Night Pitching
There are strange things afoot on the mound tonight (at the Circle K?), where the most expensive pitchers are all in tougher matchups. Almost every pitcher on this slate is decent enough to consider, but I’m going to narrow things down as much as possible. I’ll start with four main buckets that look like this:
The Good Pitchers Priced Up In Tough Matchups
Sandy Alcantara at Braves
Yu Darvish at Dodgers
Luis Castillo at Guardians
Dustin May vs Padres
Mid-Tier Pricing and/or Better Matchups
Charlie Morton vs Marlins
David Peterson vs Nationals
Jordan Montgomery vs Cubs
Nick Pivetta vs Rangers
Sonny Gray at White Sox
Good Pitchers Who Are Leftovers And Left Outs
Reid Detmers vs Astros
Eric Lauer at Diamondbacks
Lance McCullers at Angels
Alex Cobb vs Phillies
Kyle Gibson at Giants
Josiah Gray at Mets
Cheaper Stuff with Good Skills and/or Matchups
Dean Kremer vs A’s
Jeffrey Springs vs Yankees
Domingo German at Rays
Daniel Lynch at Tigers
JP Sears at Orioles

Let’s start by not burying the lead. Charlie Morton is going to be the chalk on this slate. His skill set is as good, if not better than anyone on this slate, and he has a far better matchup than any of the other high-priced pitchers. Morton’s 28.6% K rate for the season is the best on the slate (outside of 2 starts from Dustin May), and he’s picked up steam as the season moves on with 32.1% K since the All-Star Break and 34.4% K over the past month, with the walks coming down along with them. He’s had a couple hiccups, but all against better opponents, and I’m fully on board with him as the clear SP1 tonight.
