Happy Friday! Well, this one is going to be a mess. We have a full 15-game slate with an incredibly spread-out group of options on both the pitching and hitting sides.
I am coming to you from the future, after having just finished writing today’s Musings. First of all, you’re going to love it here, the future is everything you’ve dreamed it would be. Secondly, I apologize in advance for what may be the least useful Musings of all-time. I do manage to get my pitcher pool somewhat narrowed down, but if you want to skip your reading assignment today, the Hitting Cliff Notes are this – play a little bit of everybody and not a lot of anybody.
This very much feels like a slate that can be summed up with this classic Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey:
“Children need encouragement. If a kid gets an answer right, tell him it was a lucky guess. That way he develops a good, lucky feeling.”
Friday Night Pitching
This is a very deep pitching slate, but one that lacks Top Gun Best of the Best talent up top. After the top two, we have a huge jumbled mess of more than a dozen pitchers who can be projected similarly. I’ll do my best to sort it out and give you my favorites, but you can end up with any sized pool you want today.
The Two Spend Ups
Joe Musgrove vs Rockies – 24.8% K, 5.4% BB, 1.64 ERA, 3.33 SIERA
Luis Severino vs Cubs – 27.6% K, 6.3% BB, 2.95 ERA, 3.23 SIERA

You can see from these numbers, that while these are good pitchers, there is nothing elite here with the strikeouts. However, Severino has turned things on recently, and is looking closer to ace-level over his last five starts. The innings are up and the strikeouts are up, with four straight starts over 6 innings and 38 strikeouts in his last 31 innings. Even if we just take the season numbers at face value, he’s a top option tonight, and if we see more of the recent stuff, he is even further ahead. Adding to his appeal, he has dominated righties with a 37% K rate, having all his issues against lefties. The Cubs typically only have three lefties in the lineup and can top out at four. Before accounting for salary, Severino is my SP1 tonight.
