CheeseIsGood's Million Dollar Musings: Monday, June 28th

Happy Monday! Well, at least happy Monday to everyone other than Tom Eshelman. It was pretty thoughtful of the Orioles to put him in the rotation just in time to face Toronto, Houston and then Houston again. Before we get to poor old Mr. Eshelman, we do have a few aces to look at, so let’s get started with the pitching.

Monday Night Pitching

WHICH ONE IS THE ACE?

freddy-peralta-800x480

Trevor Bauer vs Giants – 31.9% K, 8.9% BB, 2.57 ERA, 3.44 SIERA
Lucas Giolito vs Twins – 30.9% K, 8.1% BB, 3.80 ERA, 3.43 SIERA
Freddy Peralta vs Cubs – 36.4% K, 10.5% BB, 2.11 ERA, 3.16 SIERA

All three of these guys are aces, and each can put up a huge start at any time. Let’s look at what they’ve done over their last five starts, just in case something has changed, and who knows what it could be…

Last 30 Days:

Trevor Bauer – 27.7% K, 10.2% BB, 3.66 ERA, 4.05 SIERA
Lucas Giolito – 35.2% K, 6.4% BB, 3.38 ERA, 2.95 SIERA
Freddy Peralta – 33% K, 8.7% BB, 1.44 ERA, 3.26 SIERA

Those numbers alone are probably a little unfair to Bauer, as he did just strike out 10 Padres in six innings last week, but still, Freddy Peralta has been the more consistent strikeout pitcher this season, and Lucas Giolito has been better recently and has better control than Bauer on the season. If I sort their opposition by strikeout rate against righties from their active roster, the highest strikeout rate of these three comes for Peralta against the Cubs, followed by Giants. The Twins are a touch lower in strikeouts and all three have similar power upside.
